Topic: Economics - Budgeting


Standard: SSEPF1 The student will apply rational decision making to personal spending
and saving choices.
a. Explain that people respond to positive and negative incentives in predictable ways.
b. Use a rational decision making model to select one option over another.
c. Create a savings or financial investment plan for a future goal.
Audience - High school students
Learning Objectives:
1. Students will demonstrate the understanding of the term budget through the development of a
preliminary personal budget.
2. Students will learn how incentives drive them to make the decisions that will best benefit them
and how that affects how they spend their money.
3. Students will learn how to set goals that will help them achieve long term financial success
instead of short term rewards.
4. Students will demonstrate how to increase their assets through employment and reduce their
liabilities by spending less.
5. Students will explain and demonstrate how they can make logical decisions to achieve long
term financial success.

Practice:
Students will follow the steps listed on the Module 2 page of the Weebly site,
beginning with Part 1: Incentives in order to complete the first half of the Module
dealing with incentives and how they cause people to act in predictable ways.
In Part 2: Budgeting, students will determine what kind of spenders they are based on
their wants, needs, and the choices they make and then choose a career for which to
create their first budget. The activities listed in the module are pre-activities for the
budget lesson (Module 2 of Financial Football - Budgets Take Balance) that is to be
delivered by the instructor in real time the day after the first half of the module is
completed.
Assessment:
Assessment for Part 1: Incentives Students will complete a quiz to test over the knowledge they gained by watching the
incentives video.

The student will utilize a comic strip format to exhibit knowledge of incentives.
Project requires students to show an example of people responding to incentives by
making the best choice that benefits them by including, type of incentive, the
opportunity cost, and the rationale for why the choice made was the best choice.
