Exploring the Role of Music in Secondary English and History Classrooms through Personal
Practical Theory summary
Goering beings his article by explaining the basis of his current study and the case by
documenting two classrooms reactions. beyond books and into musican out of the ordinary
approach to teachinghe found that it created a generally effective classroom environment.
Goering explains the personal practice theory as a basis for teaching instructors. This crucial idea
is represented in his article to be the way that teachers choose to teach their students based upon
personal preferences and style. Through this personal teaching preferences Goering seeks to
understand and utilize music within the boundaries of education.
Within this study Goering made a point that he wanted to make every individual
participating an active member of what he refers to as the learning community, so that it would
allow an unconventional approach to teaching. He sees music as a way for students and
educators to express themselves as well as establish a greater connection to setting and
characters. Through a collective analysis Goering sought to find elements within subjects like
history and English that could not be formally taught with music; his results were inclusive
finding that each teaching approach could effectively include music. With the conclusion of his
first case study he recognized that many teachers and educations do not use music within their
personal practice, nor do they believe that it is supplemental to their curriculum.
Though the testing process Goering found that it made students interest into the subject
more as well as grasp difficult concepts quicker. He claimed that music in the classrooms
motivated the individuals which overall lead to engagement. Within an extensive amount of
benefits that Goering found within the study he found one of the most important to be the idea of
allowing students to express their ideas and emotions in a way that they best understand. He
claimed that without this concept there is a risk to devaluating the student because they are not

able to create new schema. Finally, Goering claims that this strategy is overall limited by the
teachers creativity and the collaborative process within the subect.
