Student Learning Objectives SLO
All teachers in grades K-3, special areas, ESL, speech and Title 1 will write SLO for their
class/group of students. SLO will be approved by the building administration using a state
provided rubric.
A Student Learning Objective is an academic goal for a teachers students that is set at the start of a
course. It represents the most important learning for the year (or, semester, where applicable). It
must be specific and measurable, based on available prior student learning data, and aligned to
Common Core, State, or national standards, as well as any other school and District priorities.
Teachers State Growth scores are based upon the degree to which their goals were attained.
Important resources that will aide teachers in crafting and implementing this critical component of
the new teacher evaluation system can be found on the Race to the Top page on the BPS website.
Further, this page also provides links to the Student Learning Objective (SLO) Guidance
Document, SLO Road Map and a series of introductory webinars that explain how New York
State will assess the growth of student learning in classrooms. Lastly, the SLO template, SLO
Rubric Form and SLO examples can also be found on the RttT page. ( More Race to the Top page,
