More
One gene one protein hypothesis: many genes code for protein that
are not enzymes.
Most accurate definition so far: a gene is all of the DNA that encodes
the primary sequence of some final gene product, such as a
polypeptide or an RNA with a structural or catalytic function.

are introns?
Introns
For example, in the gene coding for the single polypeptide chain
of the avian egg protein ovalbumin (Fig. 24
7), the introns are
much longer than the exons; altogether, seven introns make up
85% of the gene
s DNA.

In nondividing
eukaryotic cells, the
chromosomal material,
called chromatin, is
amorphous and appears
to be randomly
dispersed throughout
the nucleus. As the
cells prepare to divide,
the chromatin
condenses and
assembles itself into a
species-specific number
of well-defined
Chromatin consists of
fibers containing protein
and DNA in
approximately equal
masses, along with a
small amount of RNA.

Nucleosomes
The fundamental unit of organization in the chromatin of eukaryotic cells
is the nucleosome(), which consists of histones() and a 200
base pair segment of DNA. A core protein particle containing eight
histones (two copies of each N1, H2, H3, and H4) is encircled by a
segment of DNA (about 146 base pairs), which takes the form of a lefthanded supercoil. Nucleosomes are organized into 30 nm fibers, and the
fibers themselves are extensively folded to provide the 10,000-fold
compaction required to fit a typical eukaryotic chromosome into a cell
nucleus.
