CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The way for sharing information by phone, face to face, over the air and on
the printed page require different approaches. How well mastering those
approaches will determine effectiveness in getting the message across. The everexpanding social media networks each have their own culture. Whether youre
texting, on-line instant messaging, sending an email, writing a blog post, Twitter,
Facebook and Instagram has ability to frame what you want to say within the
traditions of that culture will directly impact how it is disseminated.
Now days, every person in the world can use media social to share
information, so does Mario Teguh. Mario Teguh is a motivator. He is a famous
motivator and consultant from Indonesia. He got his degree at IKIP Malang. He
worked at Citibank, created Exnal Corp Jakarta as a CEO and created MTSC. He
was stumbled problems about his family. Someone who is called Kiswinar claims
himself as Teguhs son. In reacting toward that issue, Mario Teguh spontaneously
denied Kiswinars statement. He wrote on his Instagram to tell the world that he
does not have children except two children from his last marriage with Lina.
From that case, it can be analyzed the Mario Teguhs statements on social
media namely, instagram integrated with YoutTube, blog and articles. In order to
analyze the statement, it would talk about some articles that could answer the
statements of the problem. The analysis would be seen from the functions of
language, pragmatics and discourse context from the data. It would be in the form
of transactional view, reference, presupposition, implicature, and inference. Those
points are what the group will discuss more detail in the data analysis.
The object of this research is statements which were owned by Mario Teguh.
The statements which were indicated denials toward Kiswinar as his son. The
analysis of Mario Teguhs statements would be based on the linguistics functions
and the context in interpretation. The reasons of choosing this topic are to find out
the purpose of Mario Teguhs statements on instagram and the reason why Mario
Teguh denied Ario Kiswinar as his son.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

To be able to make a better analysis, it was formulated the statement of the
problem. The problems are formulated as followings:
1. What was the purpose of Mario Teguhs statement on instagram?
2. Why did Mario Teguh deny Ario Kiswinar as his son?

CHAPTER II
LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Theoretical Review
In theoretical review, it serves some theories which are related to the data
analysis. Those theories will help to analyze the data and find the answer of the
statement of the problem above. Those theories are about the functions of
language, pragmatics and discourse context.
One of the functions of the language is as the transactional view (Yule, 1983).
In the analysis of discourse, language is analyzed in what language is used. In
other hand, the discourse analyst is committed to an investigation of what
language is used for. Those functions are the followings; In primarily
transactional language, it assumes that what the speaker or writer has primarily in
mind is the efficient transference of information. Lyons (1977: 32) observes that
the notion of communication is readily used of feelings, moods and attitudes but
suggest that he will be primarily interested in the intentional transmission of
factual, or proportional, information. The function of language in the term of
transactional view is language used as a content of conveying meaning, take the
turn as a descriptive one. Transactional view of communication sees
communication as a transactional view or process in which each person serves
simultaneously as speaker and listener. According to the transactional view, at the
same time that you send messages, you are also receiving message from your own
communication and from the reactions of the other person. And at the same time
you are also sending message. In a transactional view, each person is seen as both
speaker and listener, as simultaneously communicating and receiving messages.
Pragmatics is the study of invisible meaning or how we recognize what is
meant in term of language used. In order case that pragmatics depends on a lot of
shared assumption and expectations provides with some insights in which for
being communicated (Yule, 2010). There are some points in pragmatics and
discourse context, namely reference, presupposition, implicature, and inference.
Talking about reference, according to Lyon (1968:404), the relationship which
holds between words and things is the relationship of reference: words refer to
things. Reference is treated as an action on the part of the speaker/writer.

According to Yule (2010), presupposition is what a speaker (or writer) refers to be

something true or known by listener (or reader). It is referring expression like
this, he which is assumed that our listener can recognize which referent is
intended. According to Grice (1975), implicature refers to what speakers means,
what she/he implies or suggests which is different from what the speaker literally
means. In other words, implicature is an indirect expression which implies that the
real meaning is not reflected in the utterance (Grice, 1975: 44). In pragmatics,
inference is a conclusion that is made by the hearer or reader from a text or picture
which convey information. Inference theory is explained by Yule (2010). He also
stated The inference made by listeners or readers in order to arrive at an
interpretation of intended meaning. A great deal of what is unsaid is recognized as
part of what is communicated or the study of invisible meaning.
In this paper, it also talks about someones psychology when being hurt.
Concerning about someones psychology which also provides and defines
someones mood, based on APA Dictionary of Psychology (2007:590-591) mood
is defined as: 1. any short-lived emotional state, usually of low intensity (e.g. a
cheerful mood, an irritable mood), 2. a disposition to respond emotionally in
particular way that may last for hours, days, or even weeks, perhaps at a low level
and without the person knowing what prompted the state. Moods differ from
emotions in lacking an object; for example, the emotion of anger can be aroused
by an insult, but angry mood may arise when one does not know what one is
angry about or what elicited the anger. Disturbances in mood are characteristics of
mood disorders. One of the example is broken heart syndrome. Broken heart
syndrome can prompt the brain to distribute chemical substances to heart which
can weaken the heart.
According to Naomi I. Eisenberger (2004) broken heart can be described
as the reflections of previous paintful the experiences. Broken heart is a painful
experience because of losing the social bonds in which is actually important in
someones life. Broken heart itself can be the result of death, divorce, and break
up the relationship. Broken heart can be indicated by being shock, feeling afraid,
facing an extreme sadness in life, having an uncontrollable emotion and feeling
depressed (Carol Bayer, 2010:2).

The data derived from many sources in the internet, namely : blogspot,
instagram, YouTube and Facebook. The followings data:

3.2 Data Analysis

Data analysis serves the points of how the data will be analyzed. The data
which have been included above are data which have aims to support the analysis
of the writer about Mario Teguhs statement in instagram. The analysis will be
analyzed by considering two dimensions. Those dimensions are Linguistics
Analysis and Content Analysis.
3.2.1 What was the purpose of Mario Teguhs statement in Instagram?
A. Linguistics Analysis
In linguistics analysis, the data will be analyzed linguistically. This
analysis will result on the interpretations of the utterances in data discourse.

MT: Audrey adalah anak pertama saya, dan Marco adalah anak kedua

Anak pertama based on KBBI, the phrase means the oldest child which
exists in a family. The oldest child itself refers to Audrey.

Marco refers to someones name.

Anak kedua based on KBBI, the phrase means the second child which
exists in a family. The second child itself refers to Marco.

The presupposition of that sentence shows that there are two people exist
(Audrey and Marco) which are Mario Teguhs children.

Relating with phrase tidak memiliki means the opposite of it, do not

Anak muda according to Sri Rusmini, Siti Sundari, Zakiah Darajat and
Santrock said that teenager is the transition from childhood to
adulthood during 12-21 years old.

The interpretation of that sentence is Mario Teguh tells that he just has two
children which still teenagers.

A. Linguistics Analysis
The second thing that is emphasized by Mario Teguh in his status on
social media is the phrase anak muda which means teenager. According
to Sri Rusmini, SitiSundari, ZakiahDarajat and Santrock, the range of
teenager age is between 12 until 21 years old.
Kiswinar which stated that he is a son of Mario Teguh has not teenager
anymore.

It can be interpreted that Kiswinar was born on Jakarta in April 29th 1986.

B. Content Analysis
From the Kiswinars profile above, it implied that Ario Kiswinar is
30 years old now. Based on the UUD, 30 years old is categorized as adult.
The statement of Mario Teguh emphasized on the word teenager
shows its denial to Kiswinar, because his age is not categorized as a
teenager anymore. It can be interpreted that Mario Teguh denied Ario
Kiswinar statement which was Ario Kiswinar is his son. In other words, it
can be concluded that the purpose of Mario Teguhs statement in
instagram is to show a denial toward Kiswinars presence.

From this phrase, we can make an interpretation, that is Aryani often anger to
Mario Teguh.

In this case, it can be made interpretation that
1. Aryani often decelerated about Kiswinar who was not his son when she
was angry with Mario Teguh.

context of the question that was asked by MT was the name of
Kiswinars father.

Tahu means know.

Ayah asli means the biological father.

Mengangguk means gesture that indicates an agreement or yes.

It can be interpreted that MT has been checked by asking Kiswinar that

Kiswinar is his son or not.
B. Content Analysis
From the MTs statement in Instagram, Mario Teguh was the one that
conveys information that tell the public in which Mario Teguh was not the
biological father of Ario Kiswinar. MT was dissatisfied with the
Kiswinars answer. Kiswinar said that Mr. X is his father. From that
time, MT got the answer that Kiswinar was not his son.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION
The analysis has been done to answer the statement of the problem which
is being discussed. To be able to make clear answers for the both questions, it has
been dived into two major data analysis. Besides, to make it easier to seen, each of
the data analysis which will be answered is entitled based on each question itself.
Here they are the answers for the first data analysis is What was the purpose of
Mario Teguhs statement on instagram? and the second analysis is Why did
Mario Teguh deny Ario Kiswinar as his son?.
From the first data analysis which was about Mario Teguhs statement
posted in the instagram, there was the real purpose that can be found. After having
done the linguistics analysis and the content analysis, it can be found that Mario
Teguh actually did not want to recognize the presence of Ario Kiswinar in his
world. He posted the words which showed Audrey and Marco are the only
daughter and son who are still teenagers he has ever had. In deep analysis, by
analyzing the profile of Ario Kiswinar who was born on 29th of April 1986, it is
concluded as the representation of his denial of Ario Kiswinar. In conclusion, the
purpose of Mario Teguhs statement on instagram was to deny Ario Kiswinar as
his son.
The second data analysis was discussed about why Mario Teguh denied
Ario Kiswinar as his son. By analyzing linguistics and content points in the video
which provided the text which was announced by Mario Teguh to the media, it
can be found that he implied the meaning deeper than literal meaning existed in
the text. In that case, after doing the analysis, the text served the reason why
Mario teguh denied Ario Kiswinar as his son. It happened because of his past
feeling which was being hurt, also called broken heart syndrome, by Ario
Kiswinar when he mentioned Mr. X as Kiswinars father.
