A Wonderful Environment Where Children Learn and Play
The history of Preschool has changed throughout the time in the United States. The
people involved in this had to go through and overcome many obstacles, to create the
preschool program . Also what they had to do to get this program going. Probably some people
might think that this program is not beneficial to them because they have their own reasons.
Here are some opinions in how the preschool does provide a good start for kids in their future.
The first preschool program was created in 1965 by President Johnson. He made a
big difference in this program and he wanted kids to learn. President Johnson mentioned, Five
and six year old children are inheritors of povertys curse and not its creators, he declared.
(New York Times 21 Sept. 2016: A21(L). Student Resources in Context. Web. 30 Sept. 2016)
The federal government helped create this half -day program for preschool children
from low income families. People do believe in this program that it can help the kids have
better understanding about their education. There were some people who opposed to this
teaching program but there were other people who did not.
Here are some example of the people who agreed. The positive thing about this program
is that more than 31 million infants, toddlers, and preschoolers have participated in the
programs comprehensive health, educational, and family support services for low-income
children. Jeanette Valentine mentioned, Urie was a grand theorist whose theories were
reflected in the comprehensive nature of Head Start, in the recognition of the need to support

families and enrich the educational experiences for children, and take care of children's
emotional and physical well-being.
Elizabeth Peabody she started the nation's first English- speaking public kindergarten
in Boston in 1860, she overcame resistance by emphasizing that German kindergarten founder
Friedrich Froebel's felicitous sounding children's garden was an appropriate place for young
children, not a school.(The American Prospect 15.11 (2004): A3+. Student Resources in
Context. Web. 29 Sept. 2016.) Also, Bessie Locke founded the National Kindergarten
Association in New York City in 1909. Which she avoided the internecine conflicts within the
kindergarten movement. Throughout history, since there weren't preschools, moms had to teach
their children basic stuff. That was a hard thing for mothers to do because they had to do wife
household chores, that's why Beatty thought that it was a great idea to form a preschool.
Also there was a major problem since there wasn't enough money especially in rural
areas and in the South, as were state and local politics.(The American Prospect 15.11 (2004):
A3+. Student Resources in Context. Web. 29 Sept. 2016.)With the onset of World War II new
federal money was available for Children's Centers, some of which they were open around the
clock to care for Rosie the Riveters kids. That is why Bessie Locke founded the National
Kindergarten Association. Locke's efforts over four decades contributed to 300 percent increase
in the number of children nationwide attending public and private kindergartens. This is a
small portion about the Preschool history and its overcomes.
There are studies that show that children who received preschool education were
retained less often and placed in special education less often. The probability for kids
graduating was a high rate because they attended to preschool and they are most likely to get a
diploma. This program is a good source because they are getting ready for kindergarten. When

Ojeda Avila 3
kids come from preschool they know basic stuff but they are important. One thing that they
have to know is how to spell their name and know their colors. These children are more
advanced. Also even kids which english is their second language, they are also prepare and
they don't have to struggle as much.
But it turns out that racial segregation is an issue in prekindergarten, too. An interesting
facts is that half of all prekindergarten classrooms, over 70 percent of students belonged to a
single racial, or ethnic group, despite the fact that the overall program was diverse, with no
racial or ethnic majority. Josh Wallack added, that classroom diversity is a priority for the
Department of Education and this administration, because we believe children in diverse
classrooms learn from each other , and learn better. There's no obstacle that little kids play
with with each other and learn from one another no matter what race they are.
The good thing about this program is that they care about the kids health. They offer
nutritious food as well as snacks. The appropriate items they can eat is fresh vegetables and
fruits, nonfat or low- fat dairy products( milk, yogurt, cheeses) lean meats (chicken, turkey,
fish, lean hamburger) and whole grain cereals and bread. All these products they can be made
to a fun dish if they were nicely looking plate. Here are some examples of these kind of meals.
There might be some parents that give their kids breakfast at home, probably because
they are concerned about what they eat at the school and it is understandable. But here are
some examples of meals that some preschools might give out and they are aware of the
healthiness of the kids. For example for breakfast that they can give out is French toast,
strawberries, and milk. For lunch, they might give spaghetti, cooked carrots, spinach, and milk.
Also kids love snacks so they can give graham cookies, or goldfish and some sort of juice.
These are just some examples for preschool menu. Also it depends if they are not allergic to

Ojeda Avila 4
some ingredients, then in that case the teacher will change the menu. Also the kids can bring
their own breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
This program is beneficial to the kids because this is a way for them to start learning.
The activities that they do will get their interest. They will start liking what learning is if they
enjoy preschool. Preschool is the first step for kids to start their education. It is their parents
choice if they want to start their education easy. Although preschool is about having fun and
meeting other kids, it prepares them for future success.
Parents might questioned themselves, What does my kid learn and how is it going to
benefit them? Preschool is a way where the kids can develop self-esteem and play with and
meet other kids. Angela Capone said, Kids are capable of doing things by themselves. For
example they can pour their own beverage because although they are small they can learn in
using their small gross motor skills and that way they can learn in doing small things.
Teachers interact with them and teach them in an easy and fun way. For example, they
learn their seasons and their days and the teacher might create a song for something fun to do
so they can learn. If it is raining the teacher can pick a child and ask him or her what's the
weather like. That's a way that they can participate. Playing is a fun thing to do at their age, but
they are learning a lesson because they play with their friends and sharing and caring is a
quality that they are putting in practice. Also with the art activities that they do help them either
write their name and try to be neat and using their hands to cut, glue and be able to learn their
colors.
Another thing that a parent might be concern is the teacher; in their attitudes. First of all
the teachers are aware that they have a major responsibility when having this job. This job is

Ojeda Avila 5
important because this is the first step that the kids take before continuing their education; it
prepares them. There are some advices for a well prepared teacher.
They have to be prepared and organized. They should have sanitary products, and the
centers have to be cleaned and organized by the time the kids come in and play. Also, they
should have their schedule ready for the day. For instance, what they are going to eat for
breakfast, lunch, and snacks. If the teacher wants to do an activity with them she should have
the materials ready. Additionally, it is important for them to have a glamorous expression and
be themselves when working with them. Every kid is different so they have to adapt to their
differences and get to know them to help them out if they need to work on something and be
very patient. A preschool teacher and her name is Mrs. Evelyn she said, I feel that if you are
educated about child development and you have lots of experience working with children then
you know what kids are like. You have a lot more patience because you know what typical
behaviors are for that age and you don't get upset or take it personally when a kid challenges
you. This is a good thinking because sometimes kids say things that they hear or just say stuff
that they don't really know what they mean so it is a good thing that a teacher doesn't get
offended because they are starting to learn.
This is the conclusion of the preschool history and the many things that they had to go
through to be able to create this program. The experiences that were mentioned tells their
adventure in this important program. Oscar Wilde mentioned, The best way to make children
good is to make them happy.
