Outer Space & the Super Moon with Chalk Pastels

General Learning Outcomes:
Component 6: Qualities & Details; Students will represent surface qualities of objects
and forms.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
A - Texture is a surface quality that can be captured by rubbings or markings.
C - Primary colours can be mixed to produce new hues.
D - Colour can be lightened to make tints or darkened to make shades. These tints or
shades are referred to as tone or value.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
Create a piece of art that uses rubbings/markings with chalk pastels.
Mix the primary colours to create new hues.
Lighten colour using white to create new tints.

Students will help me come up with a criteria during class. For example, they
must use all primary colours and white. And they must include a super moon.
Students will be assessed on if they have each piece of criteria in their chalk
pastel masterpiece.

MATERIALS & EQUIPTMENT


Slides that consist of pictures of outer space and the super moon
Black construction paper
Chalk pastels. Each student will get the 3 primary colours and white.
PROCEDURE

Introduction (5 min):

Hook/Attention Grabber: Discuss how the super moon was last week.
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: What do you know about the super moon?
Expectations for Learning & Behaviour: Please do not touch any materials until your
told. Dont copy your neighbour.
Advance Organizer/Agenda:
Divide the primary colours and white out of the packages of chalk.
Put one red, yellow, blue and white chalk in a cup. Make enough for every
student 17.
Get construction paper out.
Put together some space/super moon pictures to give students ideas.
Make my own example for students to see.
Transition to Body: Lets look at some pictures and examples.
Body (65 min):
Key Questions: What are the primary colours? What do you think will happen if we
mix the primary colours with white? What is a tint?
Learning Activity #1: Primary Colours & Tints
Discuss the primary colours. They should have some prior knowledge on this
because they are learning about colours in science.
Discuss tint; what happens to a colour when you add white to it?

Key Questions: What do we already know about outer space?


Learning Activity #2: Look at Pictures from Space
Look at slides that have pictures of space.
What colours do you see?
Show my example.
Assessments/Differentiation: None.
Key Questions:
Learning Activity #3: Create a space picture using chalk pastels and black
construction paper.
Create some criteria together.
Have one student at the table group come get everyone chalk. Hand out paper.
Hide examples. I dont want them copying what is on the board.
Students create their master piece.
Assessment/Differentiation: We will create some criteria as a class. Each picture must
include a super moon, and the students can only use white and the primary colours.

Sponge Activity: Pair Share with another classmate who is already finished. They can
discuss each others pictures and what they like about them. Once finished,
depending on what we got done during the day, they will either have catch up time, or
partner play once all cleaned up.
Closure (10 min):
What happened when we added white?
What happened when you mixed the primary colours together?
Who remembers what the word tint means?
Clean-upEveryone put their chalk pastels in their cup.
Return them to the side table.
Pictures go on the side counter.
Students wash hands.
Get ready for home time.
