FOREWORD 0.1 This Bangladesh Standard was adopted by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution RR-dE-ZOLO - q on", afer the draft finalized by the Mineral, Fuels and Petroleum products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Chemical Divisional committee, 0.3 This standard was first published in 1963 arid subsequently revised in 1983, 1991 and 1999. In 1999 the sectional commitice revised the standard in the previous context of world trend of using unleaded motor gasoline. In this revision level of lead has been revised. This revision cancels and replaces BDS 346 :1999. 0.4 Research octane number (RON) is determined by the fuel in a test engine with a variable compression ratio under controlled conditions and comparing the results with those for mixtures of ISO- octane and n- heptane. Fuels with higher octane ratings are used in more powerful engines, since such fuels ignites less easily. This type of fuel can be run at a higher compression ratio without creating detonation. Engine power is a function of fuel , as well as engine design and is related to rating of the fuel. 0.5 Bangladesh imports automobiles from abroad which run with motor spirit of which should match those prescribed by the manufacturers. Car, taxi, motorcycle and even power generator manufactured today are designed to use motor spirit of RON 87 and above, Considering his trend of using higher grade motor spirit, the committee decided to change the octane rating from RON 80 to 87.This will come into force from January 2012. 0.6 In the preparation of the this standard, assistance has been derived from the following publications: BS 4040:2001 Specification for leaded petrol (gasoline) for motor vehicles. British Standards Institutions. Statistics on the research octane Number in the Asia paeific countries. ASTM D- 439: 1989 Standard specification for Automotive gasoline.
