Assessments: Formative or Summative

Digital Passport provides a summative assessment at the end of the Twalkers lesson.
Ongoing formative assessment will be provided during the creation of their iMovie Trailers to help guide students to convey a relevant
example.
Summative assessment by peers at the presentations of their iMovies

Learning Intention- We are Learning to:

Success Criteria- We will be successful when we can:

M: Be safe physically when texting

M: Appropriate texts
M: Cultural sensitivity to others
M: Safety of internet use when messaging
M: Discussion revolving how texts can be made public when they
were not intended to be

M: Provide examples of good physical surroundings to text in

M: Provide examples of appropriate/inappropriate texts & why
W: Provide examples of different cultural norms & be non
judgemental
M: Provide scenarios of group texts versus private texts - what
happens in each one if a text is forwarded
M: Provide examples of how and when private texts can be made
public (ie social media accounts & group texting)

Cultural Relevance: Connect to Prior learning, Why are these

outcomes important in the culture and real world of students? Why
are these outcomes essential for future learning? How do they
relate to prior learning?

These outcomes help students become aware that what they text or
message can be made public and get into the wrong hands. They
also provide an awareness of how texts can be misunderstood by
those who read them. Different cultures have different social norms
and we need to be sensitive of those when we text others. Students
are often unaware of the world that is beyond their social world. This
course will help them realize that in modern society anything can be
made public much the same as if a letter or note was passed to
others but the difference is the vastness and speed which it can
happen in todays world.

Lesson Title:

Date: October 10, 2016

The Twalkers

Procedures:
Opener: Q&A regarding texting, phones. Introduction to game based learning. Using guided questions to
ascertain how many students have phones and use them regularly to text their friends. Exploration of how often
they have been hurt by a text as well as what physical environments do they text in.
Middle: Students will work through Digital Passports The Twalkers

Close: Discussion about the differences in their understanding and comprehension of texting in general. Why did
they like/dislike the end game on Twalkers. Discussion about the reasons they didnt like it. Was the game an
example of real-life scenarios?
Materials:
Digital Passport Teacher Account
Digital Passport Student Accounts
MacBook Air

Differentiation:
Students were able to work at their own pace. During the game play, students were allowed to try multiple times
until they understood the game and were satisfied with the results. No ELA differentiation needed.

Reflection:

I am happy with the Digital Passport curriculum because it helped students understand there are appropriate uses
for phones and texting. Some of the students mentioned to their parents about times when they were not
appropriately using their phones. Next year, I would like to spend an additional week in discussion about texting
and cultural differences. We did not explore how cultural differences can make texting challenging and why.

Lesson Title:

Date: October 17, 2016

Digital Passport - The Twalkers

Procedures:
Opener: Review of last session. Inform students they will be finishing up today.

Middle: Check with progress of individual students and help or guide as needed.

Close: Discuss the difficulties they faced while trying to text and do another activity. How does it relate to daily
life. Have they noticed other people who are texting and attempting to do other activities at the same time? What
was their impression?
Materials:
Internet
Digital Passport Account
The Twalkers Lesson and Game
MacBooks
Differentiation:
There are settings on the Twalker game that will allow for easier play. The lesson and video can be translated if
needed. I do not have any special needs students in this class.

Reflection:

This is a great curriculum and the ease of signing on and entering the game are perfect for students. If time
allowed, I would like to end each day with discussion. Due to the nature of the game and students would have to
start all over, I try to give them all the time they need to finish. There are handouts as well which I did not do this
year but will incorporate next year.

Lesson Title:

Date: October 24, 2016

Creating an iMovie

Procedures:
Opener: Discuss with the students what they have noticed during the week with texting - their own and others out
in public. Did they notice potential problems? Today they are going to create an iMovie Trailer to showcase an
inappropriate texting scenario or safety tips for texting
Middle: Students must use critical thinking skills, analysis, and problem solving to storyboard their ideas about
texting. Guide students to help them order their story - what comes first, then what, then what, and an ending.

Close: This is the middle of this session, so there is no close. It will continue onto next session.

Materials:
See previous Mondays materials

Differentiation:

Reflection:
Spend more time with students about what they know regarding storyline, e.g. beginning, rise, climax,
falling, resolution. Students need this to help them relate what they do in ELA to technology and beyond.

Show and Present

Procedures:
Opener: Today we are going to present our iMovies on the big screen TV. We will watch each persons
trailer and make positive comments about it. Students are encouraged to ask for clarification as needed.
Middle: Watch iMovie trailers, may need two weeks.

Close: Discuss the various scenarios of texting problems or helpful tips. Discuss with students to
brainstorm ideas that may have been missed. What did they like about the project? What needs
improvement? Could they do this in another media? If so, why?
Materials:
TV
Apple TV
Macbook
Google Drive
Google Drive student accounts
Differentiation:

For those who are intimidated by standing up in front of a class, they have the option to present from their
seats. However, I would strongly encourage each student to do this from the front of the class. Google
translate is available for ELL students

Reflection:
This project has the potential to be a very good one. I need to spend more time planning the timing of
each piece as well as having discussions afterwards about what the students were impressed with, what
would they do differently next time and what they did not enjoy.
I will need to incorporate the whole Digital Passport curriculum into next years lesson planning. There
are a great many lessons that can be cross-curricular and fun for the students to challenge them to use
the higher thinking strategies.
