Dynamics offset adjustments

1. The dynamics system should only be adjusted after the submodule has
warmed up for at least ten minutes.
2. Connect a 0dBu, 1KHz source to the dynamics and sidechain inputs.
Adjust RV5 for 0dBu +/- 0.1dB at TP1O.
3. Adjust RV6 for minimum distortion at TP1O. Spec. <0.02% Typically
0.01%.
4. Reduce the input level to -60dBu and monitor TP2 with an oscilloscope
set to 0.5V/cm, A.C. coupled. Adjust RV2 for an even, double, positive
peak. (Turn RV2 slowly to allow the system to settle).
5. Repeat step 4, monitoring TP5 and adjusting RV4.
Limiter/Compressor threshold adjustments and functional check.
1. Set gain, threshold and release controls fully counter - clockwise. Set
ratio fully clockwise and pull out threshold control until the -20 LED
illuminates.
Set the input signal to 0dBu, 1KHz, press the L/C button and adjust RV1 for
-6dBu +/-0.1dB at the dynamics output.
2. Set threshold fully clockwise and check that the output level is -36.5dBu
+/-1dB. Push in threshold control and check that the output level is
-16dBu +/-1dB. Set threshold fully counter - clockwise, increase input level
to +20dBu and check that the output level is +14dBu +/-1dB.
3. Slowly turn the ratio control counter - clockwise and check that the
output level gradually increases to +20dBu.
4. Reduce the input level to -10dBu. Slowly turn the gain control clockwise
and check that the output level gradually increases from -10 to +19dBu
+/- 1dB. Turn the gain control fully counter clockwise and the ratio and
threshold controls fully clockwise.
5. Set the input level to -6dBu (10dB into limiting) and monitor the
compress meter output on an oscilloscope set to 0.2V/CM, D.C. coupled.
The output should be -1.0V D.C. Switch off the oscillator and check that
the output takes 5.2 to 8.7 seconds to fall to zero.
6. Switch the oscillator on and rapidly reduce the oscillator level by 10dB.
Check that the meter output falls to zero very quickly.
7. Restore the input level to -6dBu and set the release control to mid
travel. Rapidly reduce the oscillator level by 10dB and check that the
meter output falls to zero, reaching -0.1V in about 0.3 seconds.

8. Restore the input level to -6dBu and set the release control fully
clockwise. Rapidly reduce the oscillator level by 10dB and check that the
meter output falls to zero, reaching -0.1V in 1 to 3.5 seconds.
9. Restore the input level to -6dBu and set the release control to its
clockwise detent. Rapidly reduce the oscillator level by 10dB and check
that the meter falls to zero, reaching -0.1V in 1.5 to 5.5 seconds.
10. Restore the input level to -6dBu. Check that -1V appears at the loop
input and no signal at the loop output. Press the link button and check
that 1V appears at the loop output.
11. Switch off the oscillator, short-circuit the dynamics input and measure
the output noise with a Sennheiser UPM550 set to 20-20KHz RMS. Spec.
<-97dBu, typically -99dBu.
Release the L/C button.
Gate/expander threshold adjustment and functional check.
1. Set range and threshold controls fully clockwise. Set release and
hysteresis controls fully counter clockwise (hysteresis must not be on the
end stop). Set the input level to +9dBu and turn trimmer RV3 fully
clockwise. Press the gate button and check that the output remains
+9dBu +/-0.5dB.
2. Turn RV3 slowly counter clockwise and stop when the output level
suddenly drops to -41dBu +/-2dB.
3. Turn the range control counter clockwise and check that the output
level rises smoothly to +9dBu. Set the range control fully clockwise.
4. To check that the threshold is set properly, slowly increase the input
level until the output suddenly increases and check that the input level is
+9dBu +/-0.5dB.
5. Pull out the threshold control until the -30 LED illuminates, reduce the
input level and check that the output suddenly drops at an input of -21dBu
+/-1dB.
6. Turn the threshold control fully counter clockwise, reduce the input level
and check that the output drops at an input of -61dBu +2dB, -3.5dB.
7. Push in the threshold control, increase the input until the gate turns on,
then reduce the level and check that the output drops at an input of
-31dBu +/-2dB.
8. Turn the hysteresis control fully clockwise, increase the input level and
check that the gate turns on at an input level of -4dBu +/-2dB. Turn the

hysteresis control counter clockwise, just short of the end detent.

9. Set the input level to 0dBu and monitor the expand meter output with a
DVM. The reading should be OV +/-0.03V.
10. Press the INV button and check that the meter reading rapidly
changes to -4.9V +/-0.15V. Switch off the oscillator and check the meter
reading falls to 0V +/- 0.2V. Release the INV button and check that the
reading changes to
-4.9V +/-0.15V.
11. Switch on the oscillator. The meter reading should be OV again. Press
the KEY button and check that the meter reading changes to -4.9V +/0.15V. Connect the oscillator to the KEY input also. Check that the meter
reads OV. Release the KEY button.
12. Set the release control fully clockwise, switch off the oscillator and
check that the meter reading falls to -4.9V in 4.1 to 8.6 seconds. Switch
the oscillator on.
13. Set the input level to 0dBu, turn the threshold control fully clockwise
and the hysteresis control to the 'expand' detent (fully counter clockwise).
Check that the output level is -9dBu +/-2dB. Reduce the input level to
-10dBu and check that the output level falls to -29dBu +/-2dB.
14. Set the input level to 0dBu and the frequency to 20Hz. Check that the
distortion is less than 0.1% (typically 0.02 - 0.05%). Release the gate
button.
15. Seal the six trimmers.
16. Ensure all Recall connections have been checked on ATE machine.
If you can, change the VCA to a "that 2181" for way better performance.
