1.Anarcresistantswitchgearenclosure,comprising:

BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTION
Arcresistantswitchgearenclosureshousemediumvoltageelectricalswitchgear
componentssuchaspotentialtransformers(PT),fuses,circuitbreakers,etc.A
typicalenclosurehaspluralcompartments,witheachcompartmenthousingone
ormoreelectricalcomponents.Mediumvoltagegenerallyisinthe538KVA
range.
Duringnormaloperation,theswitchgearcomponentsgenerateheatandrequire
aircirculationforcooling.Theenclosurehasventstoprovidecooling.For
example,anintakeorinletventmaybeonornearafrontaccessdoor.Airis
drawninthroughtheinletvent,isheatedbytheswitchgearcomponents,rises
andexitsthroughventsinthetopoftheenclosure,intoaplenum.
However,suchmediumvoltageelectricalcomponentscanexperiencearcfaults.
Anarcfaultcreatesanexplosionofhotgasseswhichcanendangernearby
personnelandequipment.
Inordertoprotectnearbypersonnelandequipment,enclosuresaremetalclad
andaredesignedtocontaintheexplosionandventtheexplosivegassesina
controlledmanner.Personnelandequipmentatthefront,sidesandrearofan

a)awalldefininganinteriorcompartment
b)thewallhavingaventthatcommunicateswiththecompartment
c)aventflapmovablebetweenopenandclosedpositions,withtheclosed
positionbeingwheretheventflapclosesthevent,withtheopenposition

keeper63astheventflapcloses.Thefreeendofthelatchmemberispulleddownthesurface69ofthekeeperasshownin

Toenhancethelatchingpropertiesofthelatchmember,thefreeend67ofthelatchmemberhassquared90edges.
Thesurface69ofthekeeper63neednotbetreatedormodifiedfromthesteelbracketcomponent.Thus,thesurface69can
besmooth.Asanalternative,thesurface69couldbemadesoastoincreaseitsslipresistance.Forexample,thesurface
couldberoughenedbyscoringitwithhorizontalgrooves,orwithpitting.Asanotherexample,thesurfacecouldbe
roughenedbyapplyingagrittoit,suchasbyapaint.
AsshowninFIG.5,thelocationsoftheventflaphinges55,aswellastheextensionofthelatchmember61beyondthe
couplingbolts66,areparametersinthelatchingproperties.FortheparticularembodimentofFIGS.4and5,themore
pronouncedtheboworflexofthelatchmember61intheclosedposition,thehigherthelatchingcapability,whereinthe
resistancetoallowtheventflaptoopenishigh.Inaddition,thesurfaceareaofthelatchmember61relativetothesurface
areaoftheflapissmallandtherefore,intheconfigurationsshowninFIGS.35,itdoesnotinterferewiththearcfault
explosionactingtoclosetheventflap.
FIGS.6and7showaventflap81inaccordancewithanotherembodiment.Theventflap81ismountedtoawall21ofan
enclosure.Thewall,whichhasoneormoreventopenings27,couldbeadoororadjacenttoadoor,butneednotbeso.The

ventflap81ismountedtowallbywayofhinges55.FIGS.6and7showthewall21inaverticalorientation,althoughthe
wallcouldbeinahorizontalorsomeotherorientation.Aseparatepropisusedtokeeptheventflap81open.Ingeneral,
withoutapropofsometype,gravitywouldmovetheventflapoutofpositioninthiscase,gravitywouldcausetheventflap
tocloseagainsttheventopenings27.
Theventflap81isgenerallyrectangularasshowninFIG.6,havingamainwall83andedgewalls85thatareperpendicular
tothemainwall.Thehinges55areattachedalongonesidetoanedgewall.Theventflap81hastwoends87.Attheends
88,theedgewalls85extendperpendiculartothemainwallandthenbendtowardtheoppositeendwheretheedgewalls87
areparalleltothemainwall.Agasketcanbeprovidedontheventflap,orontheinsideoftheenclosurewall21,toseal
aroundtheventopenings.
Theareaandlocationoftheventflaparefactorstoconsider.Arelativelylargeareaventflap(suchasshowninFIGS.69)
isclosedharderbyanarcfaultexplosion,becausethelargersurfaceareacapturesmoreoftheexplosionenergy.Also,a
ventflaplocatedrelativelyclosetoananticipatedarcfaultexplosioncapturesmoreenergy.Consequently,morethanone
latcharrangementmaybeusedtosecurelylatchtheventflapclosed.
Intheopenposition,showninFIG.6,theventflap81isatsomeanglerelativetothewall(typicallylessthan90)soasto
beeasilyclosedbyarcfaultexplosion.
