(Part 24) History of the Tyendinaga Mohawks (continued) CULTURE Christ Church: The history of Christ Church, lke that of the other Anglican Churches, goes back years earlier than existing written records. George Rokwaho Loft, a valuable member of Christ Chusch died in 1895. A note found in the parish record reads: “On Friday, May 3, 1895, George Rokwaho Lon, for upwards of 40 years engaged in mission work in this locality a5 Catechis, Interpreter and Lay Reader died and was buried in the church yard on Sunday the: 5” This the parish register would indicate that 1855 would be an approximate beginning date of a work that eventually led 1 the establishment of Chis! Church Yagoweis Loft (latar Mrs, John Beaver) had a schoo! in a log house for several years across from the present site of Christ Church, Church services were also held here. This was the beginning of what at first was called the Cayuga Indian Mission, Later it was known as Beaver’s Church and then in 1888 the name Christ Church, Cayuga was adopted, In July 1871, Rev. Robert Jamas Roberts was transfeered from St. Pau's (Sour Springs) to the Cayuga Mission and remained in charge until 1878, During his incumbency Beaver's Church ‘vas built and the rectory was bought. Mr, George Rokwaho Loft ‘donated the land for the church, Construction of the building began in 1873, and in the summer of 1874 was opened for service. John Beaver drew up the plans (hence “Beaver's” Church) and oversaw the building of the church. Peter Smith and Jamas Beaver also assisted in the construction and of the building. On February 3, 1873 it was decided that = rectory was needed Beaver's farm (a house, bam and 20 acres) was rented and then bought by the New England Company, An additional 46 acres was purchased af a later date, However, the Land B-Fit, Newark Valley, NY (1 year surrender by the Six Nations Council naver happened Me Secemser 2016 / JANUARY 2077 Tae MGOMEATER: 4 MEMORIES OF CATATONK IN THE 1930's & 40's * By Dick Anderson Grandparents Memories | have often heard people say, "If! had known how wonderful grandkids are, | would have had them first.” an interesting statement, but one | must say | somewhat agree with. Grandkids.are fun, You can spoil them, indulge them and then send them home ta mom for the We enjoyed raising our own kids, too. | sometimes think my kids turned out well in spite of me, nat because of me. But they had a wonderful mother, and I have often said she was the epitome of motherhood, All went to college and are all doing well taday. They were not angels growing up, but who was. Sometimes we were required to discipline them for breaking the rules. Prabably the same rules we broke when we were young. My mather’s favorite tool for instilling discipline was a switch from the lilac bush in the back yard. You had to go and get it, and It better be a good one, or she wauld lay one across the back of your legs and make you go get a better one and use that, too. it hurt a little, but you remembered it the next time you thought about breaking the rules. | often think we tend to try and give our grandkids those things we could not afford to give our own when they were young. We had a family to support, bills to pay, funds to be put away for their education, medical care and many more responsibilities that took our time and money. As grandparents, we are retired, no longer have a large family to support and enjoy spoiling the grandkids, We enjoyed helping to raise my grandkids, or should | say we enjoyed spoiling them. Maybe we did tend to spoil them, but they all turned out well. Not perfect, but | have never met a person wha was. We enjoyed those years when they were young and in school. We never missed a game af any spart my kids played in, nor did we miss any that our grandkids ware in, often traveling to Syracuse to watch the ones who lived up there. One granddaughter was a cheerleader from age eight until she graduated. So we know the feeling when someone says how much they enjoy their grandkids. THE MOoNUGHTER eB "THE BLOODIEST BATTLE OF ALL” ial ‘Sugar Loaf Hill was a small, insignifican-looking mound, barely 50 feet high and about 300 yards long, situated on the southem end of Okinawa, It was part of a triangle of strongpoints set up by the x Japanese defenders designed to delay and damage the attacking American forces. The struggle for Sugar Loaf lasted 10 days; it was fought under the worst possible conditions - a driving rain hat never seemed to slacken, day or night. Newsweek called Sugar Loaf "the most critical local battle of the war." Time described a company of Marines - 270 men - assaulting the hill They failed; fewer than 30 returned. Fletcher Pratt, the military historian, wrote thal the battle was unmatched in the Pacific war for “closeness and desperatian.” Casuatties were almost unbelievable. In the 22nd and 29th Marine regiments, two out of avery three men fell. The struggle for the dominance of Sugar Loaf was probably the costliest engagement in the history of the Marine Corps. But by early evening on May 18, as night thickened over the embattled armies, the 28th Marines had taken Sugar Loaf, this time for keeps. When Sugar Loaf was finally secured on May 18, it had cost 2.600 Marine and about 2,500 Japanese dead. The use of drilled/pin type devices to: supply water directly to holes drilled in the tree is notas effective as displaying the tree in a more traditional type of stand. Use a stand that fits your tree. Some stands have Circular rings at the top, so the ring must be large enough so the trunk goes through the hole, Other stands are open, which allows more range in trunk size. Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit a stand, The outer layers of wood are most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed. Use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. Using stands that are too small is a very common mistake. Fresh trees use about 1 qt af water per day per inch of trunk diameter, The stand should hald enough water to last 24 hrs. If the stand goes dry and is subsequently refilled, water uptake may stop or be severely limited, leading to premature drying. Contraptions are available that maintain constant water level in the stand, working an the principle of a commode float. Cold water - Oo not use hot water in the stand; of no benefit No chemicals - Do not use chemicals in the stand to prevent evaporation. Water maves into the trunk at the lower cut end, and eventually evaporates (transpires) from the foliage. Evaparation from the surface of water in the stand is negligible, compared to the loss from transpiration, Do not use additives in water, including floral preservatives, molasses, sugar, bleach, soft drinks, aspirin, honey, or other concoctions. Do not apply film- forming anti-teanspirants, The products supposedly block the evaporation of water from the surface of foliage, but in reality have little benefit. Bo not use water holding gels in the stand. They reduce the amount of water available to trees. Clean water is the only requirement to maintain freshness. a minute and a hal = Phyllis Diller OUR WORLD, OUR HOME FEATURED LIGHTHOUSE Located within Fort Constitution in New Castle, New Hampshire The station was established in 4771 and was the 10° of 11 ight stations established prior to the American Revolution, The first tower was a shingled wooden structure with an iron lantern and copper roof, Its ESS ight source was three copper Sy, oll lamps. It should also be noted that Wilcox did nat eam about the Socorro, New Mexica landing until May 11 when Wilcox's father brought a newspaper clipping describing the event The predictions made by the aliens do present a bit of a dilemma. Russian astronaut Vladimir M, Komarav was actually the irst known man to be killed in space, This happened on April 24, 1967, exactly three years after the prophecy, when his capsule plunged to earth under unopened parachutes. On October 12, 1864, he was scheduled to orbit for at least five days, bul retumed to Earth after 24 hours. As reported by London newspapeman Bruce Sandham: Recording of radio transmissions indicates that the spacecratt's crew had seen something strange and inexplicable in ortit, something that terriied them so much that they made-a hasty and unscheduled descent from space. Comman traditions include attending parties, eating special New Year's foods, making resolutions for the new year and watching fireworks displays. Early New Year's Celebrations The earliest recorded festivities in honor of a new year's arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon, For the Babylonians, the first new moon following the vemal equinox—the day in late March with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness—heralded the start of a new year. They marked the occasion with a massive religious festival called Akitu (derived from the ‘Sumerian word for barley, which was cul in the spring) that involved a different Titual on each of its 11 days, In addition to the new year, Akitu celebrated the mythical victory of the Babylonian sky god Marduk over the evil sea goddess Tiamat and served an important politcal purpose: It was during this ime that a new king was crowned or that the current rulers divine mandate was symbolically renewed Throughout antiquity, civitzatians around the world developed increasingly sophisticated calendars, typically pinning the first day of the year to an agricultural or astronamical event. In Egypt, for instance, the year began with the annual flooding of the Nile, which coincided with the rising of the star Sirius, The first day of the Chinese new year, meanwhile, occurred with the second new moon after the winler solstice. In order to realign the Roman calendar with the sun, Julius Caesar had to add 90 extra days to the year 46 B.C. when he introduced his new Julian calendar. In the United States, the most iconic New Year's tradition is the dropping of a giant ball in New York City's Times Square at the stroke af midnight. Millons of people around the world watch the event, which has taken place almost every year since 1907. Over time, the ball itself has ballooned from a 700- pound iron-and-woad orb to a brightly pattemed sphere 12 feat in diameter and weighing in al nearly 12,000 pounds. Various towns and cities across America have developed their awn versions of the Times Square ritual, organizing public drops af items ranging from pickles (Dilisburg, Pennsylvania) to possums (Tallapoosa, Georgia) at midnight an New Year's Eve, FRIENDSHIP STAR QUILT SHOP 131 Center St = Sayre, PA 18840 570-886-2296 Ba é Cozy up with a warm quilt Come see eur wide selection on quilting fabrics We algo carry fleece ond Check out our classes - Class time nat convenient? Submitted by Dianna Glann While shopping at the mail with his mom, four-year-old Spencer noticed the long line of excited kids waiting to see Santa Claus, In childish innocence, he asked his mother @ profound question: “Where's the line to sae Jesus?" Since Christmas is “Jesus’ birthday,” Spencer thought there should be more evidence of it. Though no ane questions that “Christmas” was named for Christ, “Mery Christmas” is now often replaced with “Happy: Holidays.” Christmas care about to celabrate Christ, God's greatest gift to mankind — “for God so loved the world, that he jave his only Son (John 3:16). Wrapped in that lave came something invaluable for us - “the free gift of God,” which is eternal ife in Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). It's.no surprise that 2,000 years after Jesus Christ came, Spencer pouldn't find a line to see him. Even when Christ was here on saith most people rejected his claims to be sent from God. DECEMBER 2016 / JANUARY 20177 Hundreds of years earker the biblical prophet Isaiah foretold how his countrymen would respond to Jesus: “He was despised and rejected by men” (Isaiah 53:3). The author ofthe book of Jahn in the Bible summarized it this way: “He came to his own, and his cown people did not receive him” lchn 4:11). But John went on to say that “lo al who did receve him, who baliaved in his name, he gave the right to become chidren of God” (John 1:12). That offer of forgiveness of sins stands today, And Jesus stil gives etemal lf to all who believe that he died in their place, Jesus lived a sinless lite on earth and pleased God his Father in avery detail of his life. Then he completed his mission by sacrificing his life in order to take tha place of a world of hopelessly lost sinners, “All we like sheep have gone astray, we have tured - every one - to his own way, and the Lord God has laid on him tha iniquity (sins) of us all (Isaiah 53:6). Jesus was the only one who could stand in for us, being both God and man: “There is one God, and thare is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for af (1Timathy 2:5-8). Chiist's death on a cross and His resurrection three days later made our salvation possibla. As the Bible says, “by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your awn doing; itis the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2-8-9), There itis again...God giving the absolute best git possible to us — everything we need for a meeningful relationship with Him in this life and for etemity with Him afterwards. ‘The Bible says there will come a time when all those — the “great and small, standing before the throne” — whose names are “nat found written in the book of life” will be forever banished fram God's presence (Revelation 20-12-15). Whal a tragic loss, especially since the judgment against them has already been fully paid by the Christ of Christmas. The offer of the ultimate gift ~ from God - is sill ours to accept. “God did nat send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world ‘might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does no! believe is condemned alteady, because he has nat belleved in the name of the only Son of God’ (John 3:17-18). A vast number of people will face judgment because they never “lined up to see Jesus" on earth, ‘They newer acknowledged their need to accept him as their Savior. Christmas is a wonderful ime to “get in line to see Jesus,” while you can stil respond to his amazing offer. You can express your response to his offer in words like these, spoken from your heart: “Dear God, | admit that I've sinned against you many times. But Tm convinced that when Jesus died he was taking the punishment | deserve for my sins. | believe he is the only way that | can be completely forgiven shatace le era ny sins. | accept your wonderful gift of etemal life, Please help me now to live a life that pleases you." } ‘Youll newer regret “getting in ina to see Jesus! Matthew 2:9 DECEMBER 2016 / JANUARY 2077 THE MOoNUGHTER 24 Shanghai Adventures (Par 0) By Joan Fudala NOTE: Shanghai Adventures is the diary of Joan Fudala of Longview, TX (daughter of Kart Tiemann af Owego, NY). She was officially @ tourist while her husband Carl was on @ business trip in Shanghai. Her diary covers the period of Octaber 15th through November 151, 2015. yo/222015 As | prabably walked another 15 miles yesterday, | slept in until 8:00. 1am not hungry so ! will just get something light to get started today, and maybe a cup of coffee from Starbuck's. Since my feet were still hurting, | decided to be brave and take the subway aver to the other side of the Pudong River and spend the day exploring the financial district. The subway was not nearty a5 crowded as last night so had no problem getting on and off at the appropriate stations. There are several points of exit at the subway station, and I wasn’t really sure which one | needed to take. | picked Exit 2, which put me out right at the base of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. | knew the Aquarium was right next to this. | walked in front of the tower and across the street to discover an outdoor food court. The entry fee was about $25 and it was well worth the expense. It has nine thematic zones featuring thousands of fish and other aquatic animals from around the world. My first impression was how crowded it was, especially for not being a weekend. And then | realized that there was a large number of children in uniferms, probably on school field trips. | was very impressed with the number and quality of the exhibits. Many had tall glass walls where you could look at the fish from above and below the water's surface. We then stepped onto a travellator [one of the warld’s longest) that took us to ather fleor- to-ceiling tanks with different types of fish, One display | particularly enjoyed was the jellyfish. Colared lights that changed helped accentuate their luminescent bodies, The next feature was amazing - an underground tunnel where the fish were swimming on bath sides of you as well as over your head, Then we went down an elevator that descended into a series of underground tunnels. My timing was perfect — feeding time far the schooling seas in the Deep Ocean Zone was just as | was going through that exhibit. As | moved into the Shark Cove, it was feeding time there as well. It was fascinating to watch how the sting rays used their badies to trap the faod against the tunnels and then glide across the glass to move their mouth to where the food was. DECEMBER 2016 / JANUARY 20177 The gift shop at the exit area was HUGE! All sorts of stuffed animals and other souvenirs were available for purchase. As I began my walk of the area, | tried to take a picture of the deormen af the Ritz Carlton —they were dressed like gangsters ~ but | was not very successfull | decided to.check out the IFC Mall —talk about a museum mall! There was.a glass chandelier at least 30 feet long and a replica of a French Villa in the middle of an open area. A huge sculpture of a metal man sat outside the Cartier store, | tack some awesome pictures of the buildings in Shanghai's skyline, Walking back to the hotel towards the end of my day's journey, | had to take a picture of a lady dressed ina ceremonial costume. She was just standing there —| watched for about 10 minutes - and she had no particular purpose that | could determine. t went inside the Mosaic Mall and was struck by a backdrop of what Nanjing Road probably looked like about 100 years ago. | also liked the way they used oversized props to showcase the variety of items sold on the various levels of the mall: shoes, purses, food, and toys, to name a. few. | made it back to the hotel earlier than! had on previous days, but my body needed an easier day. | used this opportunity to get caught up with my journaling. Carl had to work late So | ate dinner by myself in the lounge. It was my favorite meal there so far. | had fried rice with BBQ. pork, sliced pork In a yummy gravy, 2 Macau curry sandwich, and Taiwan Soya chicken with bambaa shoots and whole garlic cloves. | also had 2 bite-sized desserts and a white chocolate bon-bon with an unidentifiable flavored filling. Carl and Roman arrived just after 7:00 so they hurried up to the lounge (they stop serving dinner at 7:30}. | sat with them while they ate. Carl also had a Late call with his boss in California to talk about budgeting issues. + wwi-Tymg, KARAOKE $DANE by Denny & Teresa 729-3232 THE MOoNUGHTER 25
