Unit Description: Theme 7- Behaviour Disorders and Their Treatment

Lesson 1: Behaviour Disorders


Desired Outcomes:
Outcome A Behaviour disorders in our society
Purpose: Diagnostic, Formative, Summative
Modality: Write, Do, Say
Instrument: Wordle and Discussion
Learning Activities:
Begin with a quick lecture about myself and some nametag decorating
Define behavior disorder clinical aspect
o Slangs- crazy psycho etc. let students come up with them with Wordle.
o Discuss the reasons we have these slangs and why they might be offensive.
Behaviour Disorders in our Society
o Stigma- how are behavior disorders viewed What is stigma against mental illness? Why?
o What is the problem with a label? What does a label do to a person? once that label is given, it is hard to
prove that you are anything other than your illness. Ex. of giving them one symptom and telling them to
analyze you for rest of lesson. because I told you to look for it
o Stereotyping o SES and prevalence rates
o Health Care- therapy not covered fully
o Homelessness- the connection to mental illness
o Prevalence

Discussion
o Sharing experiences
o Personal experiences (Exit slip?) tell me a personal experience or if none then tell me what you want to
learn in this unit

Lesson 2: Begin project


Desired Outcomes:
Outcome B through F
Purpose: Diagnostic, Formative, Summative
Modality: Write, Do, Say
Instrument: Exit Slip
Learning Activities:
Share Did you know?

Introduce project and terms students might see while researching (psychosis, neurosis, functional/organic,
comorbidity, DSM)
Students will choose groups of 4, the first to choose group gets first pick on the disorder they want to research

After all have an assigned topic, students will begin with their research
Exit slip will be handed out 10 minutes before class end. It will ask students to define the terms mentioned at the
beginning of the class in bullet form. (these terms will be on the PowerPoint they have access to at their
computers)
Lesson 3, 4, 5, 6 (7): Work Periods
Desired Outcomes:
Outcomes B through F dependent on the particular disorder being researched.
Outcome G the treatment of behavior disorders
Purpose: Diagnostic, Formative, Summative
Modality: Write, Do, Say
Instrument: Digital Checklist
Learning Activities:
Share Did you know?
Students will continue with their research and hand it in when completed

They will complete a digital checklist towards the end of every second class (teacher will adjust if needed) to
inform themselves and the teacher of here they are at in the project
The teacher will be checking in with each group and be available for help

Lesson 7 or 8 Culminating Task Due: Sharing Day

Purpose: Diagnostic, Formative, Summative
Modality: Write, Do, Say
Instrument: Note-taking (hybrid rubric) & Presentations (rubric)
Learning Activities:
Students will view each others presentations as groups or individually on the computers.
Individual notes will be taken on each presentation including bullet points on each of the following:
- Diagnostic criteria, definition, symptoms, prevalence, and treatment
Note-taking can be done for homework if not completed during class time. (All presentations will be accessible
from a Weebly site or Moodle, if more time is needed.)
