BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

The key concepts/ideas for the lesson is for the students to identify the who, what, when, where, and why of a
story.
Academic Language:

Academic Vocabulary: Setting, character, who, what, when, where, why.

Language Function: identify, listening, describe

Discourse- Think-Pair-Share, and question/answer.

From the previous lesson the students will know how to identify the setting and main characters from a
story line.

In the next lesson, the students will describe how a character would react in a situation that is different
from the story line.
I need to plan a differentiated task because I have some students that have reading disabilities
and writing disabilities and they may not master the objective with just the activity.

This lesson connects to the students personally because the story that we are doing in class is the
tortoise and the hare. There are several different morals of this story that the students can relate
to. The moral of this story is that slow and steady will win the race, and that you should not
assume that something is a weakness. This lesson connects to the students community because
in the story the hare is teasing the tortoise and all the students can relate to being teased. This
lesson connects to the students culturally because the story translates in every language.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: (3-5 minutes)

Who has ever heard the story of the tortoise and the hare? (Wait for students to respond). Today we
are going to be reading the story as an interactive storybook on the computer.
https://www.speakaboos.com/story/the-tortoise-and-the-hare. After we have read the story and
understand the five Ws of reading you and a partner of my choice will create a Prezi.

Procedures: (30-40 minutes)

TTW explain to the students what the terms who, what, when, where, and why mean when related to a
story.

TTW tell the students to go to a computer and the students will go to a website the teacher had provided,
and the students will do research on the five Ws of readying.

TTW pass out the who, what, when, where, and why worksheet and put in on the projector for all the
students to see.

TTW tell the students lets all complete the handout together as a class

Modeling- TTW tell the students that she will complete the why of the handout on her own (I DO)
-

The teacher and the students will complete the what and when of the worksheet. (WE DO)

TSW complete the rest of the worksheet on their own. (YOU DO)

When the whole class is finished the class and the teacher will go over the worksheet together as the
teacher writes the answers on the projector.

TTW tell the student to keep the handout near because now they will relate the 5 Ws of reading to the
story of The Tortoise and The Hare.

While still on the computers TSW go on to reading the interactive story of The Tortoise and The Hare.

After the students have read the story, and now have completes the five Ws worksheet together as a
class the students will create a very simple Prezi relating the five Ws of reading to the story of The
tortoise and The Hare. The students will complete the assignment with a partner.

The questions that the students will be required to answer are as listed/

Who are the main characters?

What are the characters doing in the story?

When the characters run the race? (example: night time, day time)

Where did the main characters run the race? (example: the forest, the desert, the ocean)

Why did the characters run a race? What was the purpose?

After the students, have completed their Prezi they will present it to the class with their partner.

Closure: (5-10 minutes)

TTW ask the students for volunteers to retail the facts of the story in their own words.

In the next lesson, we will learn about how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
The formative assessment for this lesson is that the students will turn in their who, what, when, where, and why Prezi to
be assess on In the who mastered the learning objective and who did not master it with 80% accuracy. TTW assess
students by observing and listening.

MODIFICATIONS:
For the students who did not pass the objective with 80$ accuracy they will use an alternative lover level book and we
will do the activity together in a small group.
For the enriched students, they will retell the teacher the story and they will make up their own ending.
