OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

GLO 1 Investigate solutions, describing their physical and chemical properties

C1.10k - explain a saturated solution in terms of equilibrium; i.e., equal rates of dissolving
and crystallization
C1.9k - define solubility and identify related factors; i.e., temperature, pressure and
miscibility

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Understand dynamic equilibrium and how it applies to solutions
2. Understand what solubility is, how it can be changed and how it is relevant in current issues of
society

ASSESSMENTS
Key Questions:
Products/Perform
ances:

Overarching question for the unit: How does chemistry impact our lives?
- Do you think that the commonly used pain reliever, Ibuprofen, is soluble in
water?
- What importance does solubility play in the development of new chemical
entities?
- Scientific Paper reading analysis
- Solubility Worksheet

Scientific Paper Analysis

- Review material from previous day
- Students will read the assigned sections of Drug Solubility:
Importance & Enhancement Techniques and answer the questions on
the worksheet
- Once they are finished, they will hand in the worksheet
- *They may work independently or in groups, however if they are
working in a group, they must not distract others.
- *Each group member must hand in a separate worksheet
- *Groups that are not on task will be separated

Activity/Activities

PowerPoint
- Discuss application presented in second half of paper
- Ask: In the paper, what was the underlying issue for pharmaceutical
companies?
- Ask: Do you think that the commonly used pain reliever, Ibuprofen, is
soluble in water?
- Discuss Ibuprofen and talk about contributions made to increase its
solubility
- Transition into notes on solubility and saturation. Show unsaturated
versus supersaturated with gizmo.
- Continue through topics in notes and pull up gizmo again when
talking about the effects of temperature on solubility.
- Show how temperature affects solubility of a solid.
- Finish with explanation on equilibrium and have students work on
worksheet.
- Walk around during practice and make observations about student
understanding and effort.
- Provide many visuals during PowerPoint.

Why is it important to determine which solutes are soluble in

solvents or how to make solutes more water-soluble?
Students will engage in whole group discussion and responses will be
solidified in summary.
Remind students that solubility is an important topic in several areas,
especially pharmacology where drugs must be water-soluble so that
our bodies can absorb them.
Tell students that we will be looking at how to express solubility
tomorrow.
