LESSON STRUCTURE:

Time

Introduction:

15mins - Start with the 14 mental questions on the board. Including many
division questions and the 4 below:
Half of 180 is? = 90
Share 20 apples between 4 people. = 5
Divide 240 by 4. = 60
Is half of 320 equal to 160? True or False.

Teaching Approaches
DoL 1: Attitudes and
Perceptions
- Brainstorming
- Collaboration

- Introduce division by brainstorming words for division:

divide
divide by
division
shared between
halve
Time

Main Content:

10mins - Look at the square numbers used in last weeks lessons when
discussing multiplication.

Teaching Approaches
DoL 2: Acquire and
Integrate Knowledge
-Procedural
Knowledge

- Discuss columns and rows: eg, 3 rows of 4 gives 12 and 4

columns of 3 also gives 12.
- The reverse to multiply is divide and discuss how that works: eg,
12 shared into 3 rows is 4 (12/3 = 4); 12 shared into 4 columns is 3
(12/4 = 3).
- Hand out whiteboards and whiteboard markers in pairs. Write up
10mins two more examples like the above, one at a time. Working in pairs
they discuss the square number and white the two division
equations on their whiteboards and hold up when they have
finished.

5mins

- Referring back to how division is the opposite of multiplication,

still in pairs they are to turn the multiplication equation written on
the board into a division equation on their whiteboard and hold up
when finished. They can use the back of their maths books to help
them.

- Discuss how the students can use some mental strategies:

10mins eg: 100 / 4 is the same as 100 / 2 / 2
-Half of 4 is 2, so if you halve 100 and then halve again, you get
the same answer as if you divide by 4.

DoL 3: Extend &

Refine Knowledge
- Inductive Reasoning
