Topic Selected: Topic 3: What does the research say about advantages and
disadvantages of distance education?

1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.

You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.

You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a

common theme or issue.

You don't need to critique your sources

You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)

You need to provide background information such as history and

definitions

Brief Literature Review: Smart phones, portable computers, and the World
Wide Web are making the current generation of the distance education more
effective and useful. Some of the people describe the distance education as the
use of the print or electronic communications media to deliver instructions when
instructors and learners are separated from each other. On the other hand some
of the people think differently. They emphasize it over education, describing it as
getting people and often video pf people into the system and process that
connects learners with distributed resources. Internet and the Web help people to
make the teaching and learning more suitable and life saver. There are many
advantages of distance learning. It allows people to use their time more efficiently
and doesnt require them to be ready at the place of teaching. That is the main
reason why people prefer distance learning. Other than that they have the
potential to reach a global audience. Also no concern about compability of
computer tools and operating management. Nontraditional education is
described with distance education or education taking place beyond the special
spaces (campuses) traditionally put aside for that education. The fast
development of technological devices culminating in the Internet has encouraged
and enabled distance education to take place more effectively. When there is a
distance between the student and a teacher the distance learning takes place.
On this type of learning, the learner doesnt have to be exist at one place, so he

or she is independent with the place and time. As more institutions start to use
distance education, the activity of the teachers continue to change. In this
method of teaching, instructors dont have to be involved in interaction with
students. They can prepare themselves without students. Even though some
people state that the distance education might lower the quality of instruction,
Studies show that its advantages are obvious and very easy to implement. With
distance learning opportunity, an interactive program transmission takes place to
a diverse number of facilities and locations.

What is your personal opinion on this issue? Do you agree with the
research? If you agree or disagree, please explain why?
Provide examples/experiences regarding this issue from school
perspective or If you are not working in a school, from your profession. Be
specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1
paragraph)

Reflection: Distance education is a very good opportunity for people who are not able to
be present at a specific time and place for taking education. By taking the advantage of
the distance learning, people can take their courses at a suitable time and location
based on their needs. I am one of the people who are getting the benefit of that. Since I
am a full time worker and dont have enough time to attend a university course, distance
education program is just for me. I can take my courses from my computer at my home
during my available times. Thats why I totally agree with the article in terms of the
advantages of distance education.
Currently I am working as a teacher, so I dont have more time to do my master program.
At this time, the distance education is the best way for me to make this happen, so I am
taking online courses for my master classes. I can join my instructors lectures through
webinars and I can communicate with them by using online messaging services. Also, I
have the opportunity to collaborate with my classmates and work on projects together.
I can implement this to my students by keeping track of their academic performance by
using computer and internet. For example, during the summer brakes, when I need to
teach something to my students, I can get contact with them through internet and
instruct them this way without getting together at the same location.
