Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited provides broadband services to customers

using WI-MAX as access technology pan India.

The company was formerly known as Infotel Broadband Services Limited and
changed its name to Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited in January, 2013. The
company was incorporated in 2007 and is based in Mumbai, India.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited operates as a subsidiary of Reliance Industries

Limited.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (Jio) announced the launch of its digital
services with Jio Welcome Offer which is effective from September 5, 2016. As
part of the Jio Welcome Offer, users will have access to unlimited LTE data
and national voice, video and messaging services along with the full bouquet
of Jio applications and content, free of cost up to December 31, 2016.

The company announced that domestic voice calls to any network across the
country would be free for Jio subscribers even beyond the Jio Welcome Offer.
Domestic roaming services would also not be charged separately. Average
data prices would be around INR 50/GB.

Jio is rolling out a pan India digital services business. In addition to fixed and
wireless broadband connectivity offering superior voice and data services on
an all-IP network, Jio will also offer end-to-end solutions that address the
entire value chain across various digital services in key domains such as
education, healthcare, security, communication, financial services,
government-citizen interfaces and entertainment.

Jio announced the setting-up of the Jio Digital India Start-up Fund. Jio will work
on creating Jio Digital Entrepreneurship Hubs in key cities and towns of India.
The Jio Digital India Start- up Fund has set aside INR 50,000 million to be
invested over the next 5 years.

The Jio Welcome Offer provides an opportunity to every Indian to learn, try,
customise and experience high quality digital services, without paying for the
services up to 31 December, 2016 after which the applicable tariffs will apply.

The Company also proposes to use this time period to fine-tune its services
as well as for resolution of interconnection and MNP related issues that it has
faced with several other operators.

Jio may extend the period of free services in case Jio subscribers are not able
to get adequate experience of seamless connectivity across network due to

POI congestion and MNP restrictions and the quality of service parameters are
not as per the benchmarks desired by RJIL management.

The company filed its detailed tariff plans with TRAI. The company
enumerated the following principles used for formulating the tariff plans:
Benefits of technology would be passed onto customers.

All domestic voice calls for Jio customers will be absolutely free, across India
and at any time. Domestic roaming charges will not apply in Jio tariffs.

Data tariffs have been made highly affordable, with full transparency, without
any associated conditions.

The Company is offering the lowest LTE data rates in the world. Additionally it
would offer unlimited night time LTE data.

The Jio-Apps bouquet, which is worth INR 15,000 for an annual subscription,
will be available complimentary for all active Jio customers up to 31
December 2017. This has been done to make Digital Life available to
everyone.

A special student discount offer, with 25% more data on the main tariff plans,
would be offered to all students. Jio has introduced a simple tariff structure
with only 10 main plans, designed to fit every budget, as against the 22,000
tariff plans prevailing in the country.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (R-Jio), the telecom unit of billionaire Mukesh
Ambanis Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), seems to be modelling its fourthgeneration (4G) telecom services rollout on that of China Mobile Ltd, the
success of which should reassure investors who may be nervous ahead of RJios long-awaited launch.

What R-Jio is trying to do in India largely mirrors what China Mobile, Chinas
biggest telecom services provider, has done in the last two years of its 4G
launch. R-Jio plans to ride on the Chinese 4G model in at least four areas
technology of transmission, low-cost handsets, low-cost data packages and a
value chain of digital offerings.

R-Jio has a pan-India licence in the 2300 megahertz (MHz) frequency band,
which has not seen many international 4G launches using the so-called long
term evolution (LTE) technology standard. Thats mainly because the higher
the frequency, the lower the signal strength, although it offers higher data
delivery speed. This has been perhaps the biggest concern of analysts.

China Mobile is not offering its service on a standalone band; it has an

overlay of 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz. When you integrated two-three
spectrums together and have a network, you are largely able to overcome
that problem of reach. In India, too, R-Jio would also not be operating on a
standalone network per se, said an analyst with an international brokerage
who did not wish to be named as he does not cover the company.

RIL is investing Rs.85,000 crore in R-Jio, which marks Mukesh Ambanis return
to the telecom business that he first built and later handed over to his
estranged younger brother Anil under the terms of a 2005 accord which led
to the division of the business empire created by their late father Dhirubhai
Ambani.

In October, China Mobile started testing a hybrid LTE (Time Division-LTE, or

TD-LTE, in the 2300MHz network, Frequency Division-LTE on others) network,

and has 150 million 4G subscribers already, wrote analyst Abhishek Agarwal
of Macquarie Capital Securities (India) Pvt. Ltd in a 12 June report.

We expect R-Jio to go the same way, using other bands as a fall-back for
where 2300MHz signal strength is weak (like inside buildings), Agarwal
wrote.

R-Jio intends to provide 4G service, using LTE technology, in the 800MHz,

1800MHz and 2300MHz bands through an integrated ecosystem. R-Jio has
spectrum in 20 of the 22 circles in the country in the 800MHz band and 14
circles in the 1800MHz band. Its licence for the flagship 2300 MHz covers all
22 circles.

According to Vaibhav Dhasmana, an analyst with international brokerage

Jefferies India Pvt. Ltd, if one draws an analogy between China and India,
there are some common factorsthe population dynamics of the two
countries are the same; the market has room for growth but penetration rates
are high; and the geographical spread is also similar.

The combination of Jios strong initiatives and a supportive global

environment, gives me the confidence that we will see 4G LTE smartphones in
India at prices below Rs.4,000 by December of this year, said Ambani.

It is interesting to note that in China, 4G LTE devices as a percentage of

overall device shipment has increased from 10% to over 84% in just the past
year, he said.

Sachin Salgaonkar, an analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, agreed.

At the moment 4G handset shipment is 80% of the total handset shipment

to China, much higher than 20-30% seen a year back. It does show that when
you have a large operator, who will be able to push the ecosystem in one
direction, then ecosystem evolution can happen, added Salgaonkar.

Besides devices, R-Jio is also planning to be disruptive in terms of data

packages, something which has already been done by China.

One of the reasons analysts attribute to the success of China Mobile is

shifting subscribers to 4G from its 2G and 3G subscriber base through
attractive low-cost data packages.

One reason why China Mobile momentum was high was because they were
up-selling their service to an existing customer. Thats why addition in terms
of 4G has been super strong, he said. R-Jio does not have that advantage to
begin with.

Also, while China Mobile is shifting its own customers by subsidizing handsets
at the cost of its margins, R-Jio will have to pull customers from other
established companies.

Another key difference is that spectrum cost in India is significantly higher

and there is lesser headroom for capital expenditure to build a strong
network.

Reliance Jio, which commercially launched services on 5 September, has

accused the existing players of not releasing sufficient ports on their
networks, thereby leading to a situation where 75 of its calls are failing, out of
every 100 call attempts.

The government may have to look at another round of spectrum auction in

case the one starting on 1 October fails to draw enough bids.

What could hurt the prospects of a successful completion of the current

auction is the excessive amount of spectrum on offer, the high price of the
700 Mhz band as well as the aggressive launch of Mukesh Ambani-promoted
Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd putting pressure on existing telcos who already
have over-leveraged balance sheets, a government official said on condition

of anonymity. The other (fact) is that since pricing and revenues are under
pressure in the industry because of the Reliance Jio launch, some of them
might want to preserve cash to be able to compete. So that might have a
downward effect, the official added.

On 1 September, Reliance Industries Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani

announced the acquisition of 100 million customers as the companys target
by March 2017. Jios tariff plans range from Rs.149 to Rs.4,999 per month,
with as much as 75GB data included in the top plan. Jio also offers free
domestic voice calls to any network across the country with no charge or
deduction of data even after 1 January 2017.

Reliance Jio has slammed incumbent operators Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and
Vodafone for allegedly refusing to help their mobile phone users port or
switch to the new operator.
In a letter to Trai chairman R.S. Sharma, Reliance Jio said Bharti Airtel Ltd,
Idea Cellular Ltd and Vodafone India Ltd are perpetrating illegal and
perverse actions by refusing to enable the porting of mobile number
connections.

To prevent Mukesh Ambani from making another telecom company and

competing with Reliance Communications, they had inserted a non-compete
clause in the agreement.

In 2010, as soon as the non-compete agreement was scrapped, Mukesh

Ambani bought 96 percent stake in Infotel Broadband which had won 4G
spectrum in all sectors in India. Later they renamed it to Jio, and started
building fiber optic network around the country.
