Length of Lesson: 45 minutes for 2 days

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:
The objective of this lesson is to understand and comprehend knowledge about settlements in Tennessee
history.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given the name of a settlement in Tennessee, the students will present a visual aid to describe the settlement with
100% accuracy.
Given the classroom laptop, the students will research the topic in the classroom with 100% accuracy
Student Participation
The goal of this lesson is to have the students understand Tennessee settlements and why they were important.
The goal is also to have them explore technology with new ways of learning.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
State Standard 4.1 Describe the legacy and cultures of the major indigenous settlements in Tennessee including
the Paleo, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian.
ISTE Standard
Creativity and Innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative
products and processes using technology.

MATERIALS:

Settlement slips
Classroom computers
Internet access
Handout on Web 2.0 apps
Power Point program

Technology will be integrated by students visually presenting their findings with the program they select. Technology will
be integrated because students will learn how technology can affect the learning process.
A student sample of one of the visual aids will be found below.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:


The students will show their understanding of Tennessee settlements by presenting a PowerPoint or another
Web 2.0 program.
Academic language is not addressed in IDT 3600
This lesson incorporates students ISTE standard of creativity and innovation.
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular
lesson.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:(10 min) Ask students if they know what Web 2.0 tools are? Go around the room and see how
many internet programs each individual can name? Have an open discussion on why internet programs benefit
us and how they benefit us.

Procedures:
1st day (Prior to the Computer) (20 min)
Teacher Procedures:
1. After the introduction, pull up PowerPoint and go
over Web 2.0 tools and apps.
2. Hand out the Web 2.0 worksheet and instruct
students to fill it out while going through the
PowerPoint.
3. Instruct students they will be doing research on
Tennessee settlements with one of the Web 2.0
programs and creating a presentation within 4
groups.
4. Assign 4 groups among students
5. Pass out settlement slips.
6. After passing out slips, pass out classroom laptops
for students to do research and to create
presentation

Student Procedures:
1. Watch a PowerPoint on Web 2.0 tools and
applications.
2. Fill out the Web 2.0 worksheet while the
PowerPoint is being taught.
3. Receive settlement slips
4. Split into 4 groups
5. Receive classroom laptops to begin doing research
and creating the presentation for next class.

At the Computer (25 min)


Teacher Procedures:
1. Instruct students how to sign in to the classroom
laptop
2. Remind students to refer to their handout while
researching their settlement
3. Walk around and answer questions from students
while monitoring work progress.
4. 5 minutes before exiting classroom, have student
put their laptops back in the cart.

Student Procedures:
1. Sign on to the computer and access the internet to
start research.
2. Refer to handout to help with research of
settlement.
3. Ask any questions if necessary
4. Continue research and creating presentation until
time to clean up
5. Put laptops back up in the cart.

2nd day (At Computer) (10 min)


Teacher Procedures:
1. Instruct students to get their laptops and finish
wrapping up their presentations.
2. Ask students if they have any last questions before
the presentation.
3. In last 5 minutes before presentation, have students
save their presentation and send it to the teachers
email.
4. Instruct students to put laptops up and get ready for
presentation.

Student Procedures:
1. Enter the classroom, get laptops and finish creating
settlement presentation.
2. Ask any last questions if necessary
3. Save presentations and send it to teacher email
4. Put laptops up and get ready for presentations.

After Computer (30 min)


Teacher Procedures:
1. Randomly select groups to present until everyone
presents.
2. Congratulate students on creating their own
presentations with a Web 2.0 tools.

Closure: (5 min of Reflection)

Student Procedures:
1. Present and watch presentations until every
goes.

After all of the presentations are presented, ask students how they liked the assignment and what
presentations they liked the best. Spread encouraging words over the classroom to keep doing the best
work they can do in school.
