Lesson Title:
Measuring

Grade Level:
1st

Type of Lesson:
Inquiry
Content Area:
Mathematics
Content Standard:
CCSS Math Content: Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two
objects indirectly by using a third object.
CCSS Math Practice: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
ELD Standard:
Collaborative-Expanding- Contribute to class, group, and partner discussions by
listening attentively, following turn-taking rules, and asking and answering
questions.
Lesson Objective:
Students will be able to measure and compare objects using different non
standard units of measurement.
Driving Question:
How can we decide which slide in our playground is longer?
Assessment Plan (formative & summative):
Formative- Observe children during red robin as they discuss their plan for
measuring the slides. Children will also be assessed as they are measuring the
slides.
Summative- Children will be given a worksheet to measure an item from the class
using a nonstandard unit of measurement of their choice.
Assessment Accommodations (formative & summative, per focus student):
EL- Student will be paired with an English speaking peer. Visuals will also be
provided.
At risk (behavioral)- Student will be provided visuals and teamed up with an adult
volunteer or peer.

Above grade level- Students will be asked to measure a third play structure using
their choice of non standard unit of measurement.

INTO (intro event or hook, driving question)

Into: Class conversation.. What ways do we use measurement in our daily lives?
Problem Our principal is going to get rid of one of our playground slides. She is
going to let us keep the longer one. (We have one straight slide and one spiral
slide)
Driving Question How can we decide which slide in our playground is longer?

THROUGH (cycle of inquiry, formative assessment/checking for understanding)

Teacher gives directions for RoundRobin
Materials Engineer: Hands out nonstandard measuring tool,
markers/paperclips (visual for size)
RoundRobin:
In small group students discuss ways to use measuring tool, how they will
measure
the outdoor slides and any extra materials they made need.
Walkabout:
During RoundRobin the teacher will walk around listening to group
discussion; offer
support when needed; answer any question and address any teachable
moments.
Timekeeper: Informs group of how much time they have left.
Group Recorder
Will draw and/or write the groups plan in the group journal
Materials engineer
Will hand teacher the groups plan
Teacher reviews plans. Once all plans are reviewed and revised, the groups
will go outside.
Teacher gives next set of directions.
Students gather outside near the slides.
Two groups per slide
One group on each side of the straight slide and one group on each
side of the
spiral slide.

Materials engineer
Hands out materials (paperclips/markers and group journal)
Measuring:
Students measure the slides using paperclips or markers.
Walkabout:
Teacher will walk around listening to conversation and observing how the
group is working together. Teacher and volunteers will take pictures of
students while they are measuring the slides. Teacher will continue to answer
questions and support the students as needed.
Group Recorder:
Will chart the length of the slide in group journal.
Timekeeper:
Remind students of time
Teacher: leads groups back to class after all slides have been measured for
sharing of group findings.
Share out:
Group Reporter:
Will report to class: The slide they measured, what tool they used to
measure, the
length of the slide measured and the process taken to measure the
slide.
Teacher: records each groups findings on the board so that students have a
visual.
Group Response with a White board:
Each team is given a white board and each member of the group is given a
pencil and handout.
Individually the members will circle the slide they believe is the longest. After a
couple of minutes teams are cued to share their response with their team
members and decide upon the best answer with explanation. The recorder then
writes the teams answer on the board. And the reporter shares the teams
answer with the class.

BEYOND (application or presentation of learning, summative assessment)

Independent Practice:
Teacher will pass out worksheet asking students to measure the height of their
chair using their markers and paper clips and record their results.
Students will then be allowed to share their results with a partner to compare
answers.

Teacher will then ask students to measure their chair using their own chosen
tool brought from home.
Students will write a sentence explaining how their tool affected their
measurement and place their 3 tools in order of length.
Teacher will collect worksheets and review answers for accuracy.
