Process used to complete plan

To complete the personal education plan, the first resource I had to use was the UNCC Academic Plan of
Study for Civil and Environmental Engineers. The first five semesters of my college education dont
entail any technical or civil engineering electives, so these semesters had to follow the academic plan of
study. The last three semesters of my education plan involve various electives, and this is where I had to
create a process of selection. The process I used was to look up all civil engineering courses and narrow
these courses to those that involved environmental engineering since that is the section of Civil
Engineering I plan to pursue. I did the same with the opening for a technical elective; I picked the best
match to the interests of the environment. Other sources used were the lookup feature on the UNCC
student portal, and the elective options listed on the civil engineering home page.
Details of the Plan
The details of this plan concern the eight electives that I must complete to meet graduation requirements
for a civil engineer. Three of these electives are civil engineering electives, two are civil engineering
design electives, two are mechanical or electrical engineering electives, and one is a technical elective.
The two mechanical or electrical engineering electives happen in semester 6 in my junior year, and I
chose for them to be MEGR 3121 and CEGR 3111 (see next page for course titles). One of the two CEGR
Design electives also must be taken in this semester, and I chose CEGR 4142 for this opening.
In semester 7, the first semester of my senior year, I am required to take one of the three civil engineering
elective courses and the other civil engineering design elective. For the civil engineering elective I chose
CEGR 3111, and for the design elective I chose CEGR 4242.
The last of my elective courses come in semester 8, my last semester here. This semester contains a
technical elective and two civil engineering electives. For the technical elective I chose ESCI 3180 and
for the two civil engineering electives I chose CEGR 4147 and CEGR 4264. After all of these selections,
my engineering education plan was complete.
Logic Supporting Plan
The logic that I used to support my selections mentioned above that finished my plan was that of
consideration to what would contribute the most to a concentration in environmental engineering. This is
especially apparent in the selections of my civil engineering and civil engineering design electives. There
are only certain design electives that the college of engineering allows, and they are groups by major.
Using basic major selecting logic I chose the electives that matched environmental engineering instead of
choosing the electives for structural or geotechnical engineering. This same logic was used when
choosing civil engineering electives. Sure, a class such as CEGR 4162 (Transportation Planning) sounds
like an interesting elective, but will not have the same impact on my education as CEGR 4147
(Stormwater Management).

Using this logic, I was able to select every type of environmental elective the college of engineering
offered, as well as an earth science course that discusses environmental impacts.
Conclusion
Through this academic plan for the next 7 semesters I believe that I have developed an effective and easy
to follow plan that will lead to an extremely qualified degree in environmental engineering. Without this
plan I may have never had the time to sit down and effectively choose what electives I could take to
improve my technical knowledge about the environment.
