First Quarter
The first quarter is based on fundamentals. The main goals are to correctly set-up the
students instrument carriage and music fundamentals.
In class, we will go over the history of the ukulele, correct instrument carriage, correct
hand position, where to strum, how to read tabs, and also how to read off of a clef.
Creator: The students will be a creator during this quarter by creating their own
strumming patterns while learning where to strum on the ukulele. Students will also
compose a short piece with this strumming pattern they created.
Performer: Students will be performing for each other daily. They will be playing in
small groups every day showing each other what they have learned. Students will also
present their new chord they learned to the class as well as a new strumming pattern that
they created.
Critic: When performing in small groups, students will give constructive criticism and
feedback on correct hand position, strumming position, and other things that will help the
performer grow as a musician.
Assignments/Projects
Students will create their own strumming pattern after learning where to strum on
the ukulele.
After learning how to read tabs, their assignment will be to go home and learn a
new chord on their own.
The first quarter project will be for students to notate the chords they have learned
thus far, and to also be able to notate the strumming pattern they created, and to
create an eight-measure song with what they learned.

Second Quarter
The second quarter is focused on learning how to change chords quickly and efficiently,
and creating music from these chords. Students will also be performing cover songs.
In class, we will learn more challenging chords, as well as learning how to get from chord
to chord efficiently. We will also be learning many songs that have similar chord
progressions from many genres, as well as performing cover songs, and songs from other
cultures.
Creator: Students will be creating their own chord progression with new chords they
have learned this quarter.
Performer: Students will be performing for each other daily. They will be playing in
small groups every day showing each other what they have learned. Students will also
present their cover songs to the class.
Critic: When performing in small groups, students will give constructive criticism and
feedback on correct hand position, strumming position, and other things that will help the
performer grow as a musician.
Assignments/Projects
Students will create their own chord progression using newly learned chords.
The second quarter project will be for students to perform a cover song
individually or in small groups. There will be guidelines for the songs, that way
not every group will pick the same song, and the songs will not be the same four
chords over and over again. The song must change the chord progression at some
point. Also, students should change strumming patterns and techniques in the
song.

Third Quarter
The third quarter is focused on playing more cover songs, but more on creating their own
songs.
In class, we will continue to play more cover songs, and songs from other cultures. In
addition to continuing group playing, students will begin to create their own music.
Creator: Students will be creating their own songs either with or without lyrics.
Performer: Students will be performing for each other daily. They will be playing in
small groups every day showing each other what they have learned. Students will also
present their own songs to class, which can be a live performance or a recorded
performance.
Critic: When performing in small groups or in front of the class, students will give
constructive criticism and feedback on correct hand position, strumming position, and
other things that will help the performer grow as a musician.
Assignments/Projects
Students will create their own song using whatever chords they have learned in
class or on their own.
The third quarter project will be for students to write their own song. Students
will have to use notation software to create their song. Students can choose to
write lyrics with the song, or just play the ukulele, whichever they are
comfortable with. This project will not have many guidelines as this is something
I want the students to feel comfortable creating whatever they wish, using the
knowledge we have gained throughout the year so far.

Fourth Quarter
The fourth quarter is bringing everything they have learned from the year and performing
for people outside of the class as well as recording some of the music they have created.
In class, students will continue to play their own creations to each other. Students will
also have to perform outside of class, including at a band/orchestra concert, as well as at a
different venue outside of school that is entirely figured out by the students with teacher
guidance.
Creator: Students will be creating their own performance in a venue outside of school.
Students will have to create the program, also.
Performer: Students will be performing for each other daily. They will be playing in
small groups every day showing each other what they have learned. Students will also
perform for audiences outside of the class.
Critic: When performing in small groups, students will give constructive criticism and
feedback on correct hand position, strumming position, and other things that will help the
performer grow as a musician.
Assignments/Projects
The fourth quarter project will be for students to perform at a venue outside of
school. Students will need to create a program, book the venue, and perform with
only teacher guidance.
