Social Media Information Systems

Being a millennial and growing up in the 21st century, I have witnessed the constant

changes and advancements in technology. In the past decade or so, a major evolution in
computers and cellular devices has taken place, and in recent years, social media has taken the
world by storm. Google defines social media as websites and applications that enable users to
create and share content or to participate in social networking. Some examples of social media
are: YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, LinkedIn, etc. I have personally
had the chance to use all of these. Although many people use social media to communicate
with friends or stay up to date on current events, it can be used to better ones business.
History of Social Media

Contrary to popular belief, Social Media actually goes back further than the 21st century.

The idea of social media goes back thousands of years. Back then, social media was seen as a
means to communicate across great distances without the normal face-to-face interaction.
Primitive forms of social media include letters, telegraphs, radios, etc. (Hendricks, 2013). The
first actual recognized social media site, Six Degrees, was created in the late 1990s. In the past
15 years or so, social media became popular after the creation of blogging. Today, there are
hundreds of social media apps and websites; endless information at the click of a button
(Hendricks, 2013).

Uses of Social Media in Business

There are many reason why a business should be active on social media in this day and

age. According to the Global Web Index, 37% of internet users follow their favorite brands on
social media to keep updated on new products. In addition, 30% of internet users use social
media websites to research a product before purchasing. In addition to this, social media can
do things such as increase brand awareness, help the business learn about target market while
targeting new customers, and also save the business a lot of money on marketing. Because
social media utilizes the internet, anyone can access the information put forth. Many
companies are switching to the use of social media to target the younger demographic.
Companies such as Nike and Amazon put ads of new products on Instagram to increase their
brand awareness. Another reason why companies are using social media is because its free,
which saves them money to use for other things. According to Forbes, 84% of (social media)
marketers found as little as six hours of effort per week was enough to generate increased
traffic (DeMers, 2014). Also, with the changing times, companies use social media to stay
relevant. Often times, companies are left in the dust if they are unable to adapt to the new
Personal Experiences with Social Media

Most people my age utilize social media for a variety of reasons. Some reasons are to:

communicate with friends, read about current events, watch videos to cure boredom, shop,
listen to music, etc. I strongly believe my generation cant live a day without some type of
social media. I personally check Instagram at least 30+ times per day, sometimes to the point
where I do it instinctively. Despite my addiction, I have also used social media for business. I

have used Facebook to sell old video games. The page was called 808 Swap meet which was
basically a place where people would post their unwanted items and people could offer their
best prices for them. As rudimentary as it sounds, I found it to be quite effective. Instead of
getting ripped off at Game Stop (or some other place that buys back games), I was able to get
75% of the original value back.

In summation, social media can be helpful for business. In the next few years, more and

more companies will have social media systems integrated in their business plans. With the
changing times and advancements in technology, the world is shifting more and more towards
the digital age. Companies need adapt and get with the times if they want to be relevant in the
future. Social media is the way to accomplish this.
