Wednesday Lesson Plan

Teaching Outrageously
Teague Albenesius
Theme: Welcome to Algebra
Lesson Subject: Solving Real-World Division Problems
Grade: 4th on Grade Level
Duration: 1 hour
State Standards Addressed: 4.ATO.2 Solve real-world problems using multiplication
(product unknown) and division (group size unknown, number of groups unknown).
Content Goal: The student will understand how to solve for real world problem where
the quotient is unknown.
Student Learning Objectives:
Cognitive Objective 2.1.b: When given 10 real-world problems using division with group
size unknown or number of groups unknown, the student will calculate the correct answer
for at least 8 problems on their homework.
Affective Objective 3.1:
During groupwork, the student will offer at least one helpful comment toward solving the
problem which will be recorded on a checklist.
Materials/ Resources/Technology:
Resources and Materials:
5 large white boards
10 Dry erase markers
5 pre-printed problems to be posted next to the white boards
Websites and Purposes:
I used the following websites as inspiration for problems or I took problems directly from
these resources:
Math Worksheets 4 Kids
K5learning
I have also linked the k5learning.com links in the connection to home so that parents can
have access to the solutions to these problems and help their children out at home if they
need extra help.

1. Procedures:
a. Preparation Before class begins, I will need to set up the white boards around
the room with 2 markers at each board and a word problem next to each.
b. 8:00 8:05 Introduction:
Good morning class! I need you all to turn in your homework to the front of
the room and then stay standing! Were going to be doing things a little bit
differently today, but let me go ahead and introduce what were doing; were
doing what we did yesterday, but with division. Alright! Lets go!
c. 8:05- 8:20 Presentation
1. To begin, I will move to the first white board and have all of my students
follow me and stand, kneel, or sit in front of the board while I do a
practice problem and explain. Similarly to Tuesdays lesson, I will
underline words that show division and circle number words. I will
encourage my students to do the same to make sure that they understand
that not all word problems will be multiplication problems. For the last
problem, I will explain that sometimes multiplication problems have
multiple steps and I will stress the importance of reading each problem
twice. I will also remind students that they can work backwards using their
multiplication table if they are struggling with finding the right numbers.
2. At the end of each problem, I will let the students ask questions and clarify
any confusing information. When there are no further questions, we will
move on to the next board until all 5 problems are finished.
d. 8:20 8:50 Application
1. Using peer mentoring, I will take the students who performed well based on
their homework and pair them within the students who did not perform as
well. Together, the students will take turns working on problems, and during
this time, each student will aid in helping the other student practice. I will also
walk around the classroom to aid the students who are struggling.
e. Closure 8:50-9:00
At 8:50, I will have the students work on their homework for individual work
until it is time for the Wrap Up.
