Dissociative Disorders - Tests and Diagnosis. Mayo Clinic, 26 March 2014,
http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dissociative-disorders/basics/tests-diagnosis/con20031012
The source from the Mayo Clinic, briefly discusses how in order for you to be diagnosed
with Multiple Personality Disorder you much first go to your regular doctor so they can rule out
physical conditions, brain diseases, or temporary altered states. Once your doctor rules out these
conditions they will refer you to a mental health professional. Furthermore this source lists the
criteria you must meet to be diagnosed with MPD, the treatments for MPD, and also the possible
drugs to help control MPD.
After a thorough analysis of this source I have deemed it credible and accurate.
According to the source To be diagnosed with a dissociative identity disorder, you must meet
criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the
American Psychiatric Association. This manual is used by mental health providers to diagnose
mental conditions and by insurance companies to reimburse for treatment. Which connects to
my other sources because they also refer to research done by multiple associations.
This source has a priority relationship to my research topic. My research topic included
how to diagnose someone with Multiple Personality Disorder and the treatments.
Dissociative Identity Disorder. American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy,
https://www.aamft.org/iMIS15/AAMFT/Content/Consumer_Updates/Dissociative_Identity_Diso
rder.aspx
The source by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy goes more in
detail about the impact of having a family member with Multiple Personality Disorder. This
source also goes into details about the causes and symptoms. It tells you how to seek help for
your loved one and how they can seek help professionally for themselves. It also provides

warning signs of Multiple Personality Disorder on when you should go to a health professional
to get a diagnosis.
This source is accurate. It tells you a great deal about seeking help for yourself or a loved
one. Early intervention and psychotherapy for experiences of abuse/trauma in both children and
adults can help prevent the formation of dissociative symptoms and dissociative disorders. The
earlier you seek professional help the sooner you can get your loved ones helped. If you know of
someone with trauma or who is being abused help them to prevent dissociative symptoms and
dissociative disorders. The source also states Left untreated, DID can last a lifetime. While
treatment for DID may take several years, it is effective I believe this statement could be biased
to give some hope to families. None of my other sources have mentioned the cure of Multiple
Personality Disorder. The sources found talk about coping mechanisms but not curable.
This source relates to the rest and my topic because they all thoroughly discuss the
treatments and symptoms of Multiple Personality disorder. It ties into one of my main points of
my inquiry topics of how to find help for your loved ones if they have Multiple Personality
Disorder or are having symptoms of it.
Meet the Mother with 20 Personalities| The Oprah Winfrey Show| Oprah Winfrey Network.
YouTube, uploaded by OWN, 29 July 2014, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2atzoaA2NI
The video source from YouTube shows the lifestyle of a grown woman with Multiple
Personality Disorder and how it affects her daughter Aimee. Kim has twenty different
personalities and the video went through and showed three other than her dominant personality.
In many of her personalities she actually believes that she is a male. Varying on the personality
she is straight or homosexual but she states she is not gay.
This video is an accurate and a biased source because it visibly shows you Kim with her
multiple personalities. Kim suffered severe trauma that caused her mind to split into multiple

people, including Judy, a 15-year-old bulimic; Salome, a devout Catholic; and Ken, a depressed
gay man. It actively shows how hurt her daughter is and the lack of bond between them. Aimee
was taken from her mom around the age of seven or eight by social services. Bonny one of
Kims twenty personalities is the motherly figure for Aimee. Kims other personalities are
oblivious that Aimee is her daughter. Her other personalities believe Aimee is one of her friends
daughters. It shows you that through all of her personalities she doesnt know who she is. The
news anchor asks her questions throughout all of the personalities shown and in some she
actually believes she is an adult male. This source could be biased because the interviewer didnt
seem to be genuine when asking her questions. It seemed like Kim was a joke for her or an
experiment. It didnt seem like she wanted to help her.
The YouTube video is important to my research because it gives me an inside view on
how people act when they have Multiple Personality Disorder. In my research I was wanting to
observe someone which Multiple Personalities but after exploring the internet and finding videos
I have observed enough people with the disorder to not want to see it. Her characteristics seem
unhealthy for her and those around her. Her personality Salome is a very angry, religious, and
violent character.
Ross M.D., Colin A., Multiple Personality Disorder: Diagnosis, Clinical Features, and Treatment,
Part One, John Wiley& Sons. Inc., 1989
Ross in this section of the book goes through the history of Multiple Personality Disorder
and where it originates from. Ross also talks about how throughout history health professionals
have misdiagnosed Multiple Personality Disorder.
Rosss source is accurate. It talks about the complexity of Multiple Personality Disorder
and how it can come about. Like most diseases he discusses how more knowledge and
understanding was spread about the disease over time and how culture can influence the

treatment/ understanding. Part One states The treatment of MPD in North America in the 1980s
and 1990s is culture-bound. It represents the attempts of therapists to relieve the suffering of a
group of people whose disorder exists in a particular historical content. MPD was not diagnosed
very often in North America only 10 years ago and it is rarely diagnosed in Great Britain and
continental Europe today. Multiple Personality Disorder is diagnosed more often today than the
time when the book was written. The MPD patient in this culture has a dissociative disorder
because of childhood sexual and physical abuse in the majority of cases; in other cultures or
times the trauma giving rise to the dissociation might be war, famine, religious persecution, or
natural disaster, and the symptoms and the treatment would therefore be different. Ross is
stating that depending on the culture Multiple Personality Disorder can be trigged by certain
event within ones life.
Rosss book tied into my research topic because I was curious as to how one gets
Multiple Personality disorder or if they noticed it. After researching this book I am now curious
as to why the rates for Multiple Personality Disorder are higher than other countries.
Smith, Douglas R., et al. Multiple Personality: Theory, Diagnosis, and Treatment, a Case Study,
Irvington Publishers. Inc. 1982, New York
Smith and his colleagues in this book went through diagnosing patients with Multiple Personality
Disorder and running different physical and mental tests on them. They also tell a story of one of
their patients as they try find an efficient treatment technique and approach new ways.
Multiple Personality Disorder can be a hard disease to treat because all treatments effect
each person individually. According to the book with their research professionals have conducted
treatment techniques Theoretically, treatment choices in the literature have involved five
possibilities; (a) waiting for spontaneous integration; (b) attempting to reconstruct and to
reinforce the main personality; (c) focusing on the healthiest personality; (d) treating each
personality separately; or (e) attempting a forced integration (Brandsma & Ludwig, 1974). To

this list must be added that of creating a totally new and different personality from parts of the
others, theoretically possible through hypnotic procedures. An integration or fusion of
personalities, if complete, appears to decrease the probability of subsequent emergence of other
multiple personalities under stress. I deem this book a credible source because they list their
sources and are a scholarly team.
This book correlates with my research because it helps me understand the intense study
of Multiple Personality Disorder. Within this source it also tells the possibilities in which you can
help treat those with Multiple Personality Disorder.
