Part 1: Self-Regulation at a Profession Level

Describe what is meant by a self-regulating healthcare profession. (2 marks)
A self-regulating healthcare profession is a profession that recognizes the maturity of the
profession itself. The Ontario College of Teachers gives insight into how a self-regulating
profession works. According to the Ontario College of Teachers (2016), the profession
sets and controls the standards of competency and conducts. They are responsible for
placing in educational, technical and ethical standards. The profession has the authority to
license and to discipline when necessary. In the healthcare field, massage therapists
follow general self-regulating standards as teachers.
What people, organizations, or things are present in order to make massage therapy
a self-regulating profession in Ontario? (3 marks) Describe their role in selfregulation. (2 marks)
The CMTO, massage therapists, the code of ethics, and the standards of practice are all
things present in order to make massage therapy a self-regulating profession in Ontario.
The CMTO is self-regulating because they set and maintain the standards of practice, as
well as having their own code of ethics (CMTO, n.d.). The CMTO is the only
organization that gives out licenses and also have the power to discipline when necessary
(CMTO, n.d.). Also, the CMTO provides guidance and has set policies for all registered
massage therapists to abide by.

Part 2: Self-Regulation at a Personal Level

Describe what is meant by self-regulation at a personal level. (2 marks)
Personal self regulation refers to an individual's ability to exercise organization, planning,
monitoring, and evaluation of personal progress. This describes the process of an
individual taking control of their own learning and behavior.

How does self-regulation support massage therapists as individuals? (2 marks)

Self regulation is an important part of a therapists success after being registered. It can
help massage therapists continuously update on research to address possible presenting
conditions. This will be important so that the therapist treats every patient individually
and not based on what they are comfortable with. Self regulation is an important tool for
keeping detailed documentation and records, regulation of time, health, hygiene etc in
their personal life as well as at work.
Use examples to illustrate how this might occur. (2 marks)
Massage therapists are able to self-regulate based on what they are focussing their
practice on. It is up to the individual how to track his/her progress and learning through
continuing education, taking up a new technique (i.e. acupuncture, k-taping, proper
lymph drainage technique courses), e.t.c. With continuing education, massage therapists
is able to maintain evidence-based practices in a growing profession.
How might self-regulation contribute to quality assurance? (1 mark) Again, use
examples to illustrate your points. (1 mark)
CMTO helps massage therapists provide the best care available to individuals, they set
and maintain standards of practice, code of ethics, policies and procedures so that
massage therapists can provide every individual with the best available care available
(CMTO, n.d.).
The CMTO and educators teach you how to individualize each treatment that you will
provide specific treatments to everyone that walks into your clinic. They teach you that
not one technique will help every individual the same was as it does for another person
(CMTO, n.d.).
The CMTO sets standards for hygiene, so that you are treating people in a safe and
sanitary matter. They teach you how to properly treat someone when you or your patient
have open wounds (CMTO, n.d.).
