Christmas is looming and the mosquitoes are still

buzzing. What an amazing year, we look forward
to a calmer 2017. Have a very safe and happy
Christmas in Barwon Heads and throughout the
world.
CoGG - We welcomed the CoGG Administrators' to
Barwon Heads on the 16th November. This was a very
inclusive meeting, all the better because they came to
us. Dr Kathy Alexander expressed her view that the
City of Greater Geelong is a combination of a number
of villages. YES, we know and we wait with interest on
how this strength will be recognized and protected.
There was considerable discussion about the
environment, over development, drainage, traffic,
cycling and parking. The Council announced its Our
Future project and encouraged all to participate.
Barwon Heads has a strange governance
arrangement; Vic Roads are responsible for the
arterial roads, Golf Links Rd and Bridge Rd, the
Council is responsible for the rest and Barwon Coast
is responsible for the Crown Land and most of the
coast, parking, camping and recreation. There are
times when we are frustrated by the tendency to pass
the buck. We are now going through a phase of
community consultation on everything and it will be
good to see results. We look forward to better cooperation between the big 3 in 2017.
TRAFFIC - We note with interest the recent
discussions about traffic. We have always focused on
pedestrian safety and proper cycling facilities. We
have been involved with the Barwon Heads Traders,
Senior Citizens and Sustainability groups and met with
Vic Roads and the Council on numerous occasions to
help make Barwon Heads safer for pedestrians. The
new pedestrian crossings reflect this consultation. You
might have read our recent letter to the Echo, which is
self explanatory (we repeat for those who haven't):
We thank you for your interest in the Barwon
Heads Pedestrian Safety Project. As you are
aware the pedestrian crossings are new, and
unfortunately there has been limited notice to
motorists. There has been significant research
and planning behind the project, and its purpose
is to provide safe crossings for the many
hundreds of dog-walkers, mums with prams, kids
with bikes and surfboards, shoppers, people on
motorized scooters and families out for an icecream coping with often aggressive traffic.
Barwon Heads has traditionally been a holiday
destination, however recent growth at Armstrong
Creek and Ocean Grove, and our proximity to
Geelong and Melbourne has resulted in a
considerable increase in day visitors, throughout
the year. We are not the only town along the coast
which experiences frustrating traffic queues and
time delays at busy times. The 2006 decision to
rebuild the Barwon Heads Bridge in its current
location did not take into account proposed
growth and has added to traffic density. Heavier
traffic is expected to put significant pressures on
parking in town and in the coastal reserves.

www.barwonheadsassociation.com

Many of us remember traffic snarls over the past 5

years, which have become worse over the past 2
years, long before the installation of the
pedestrian crossings. Last weekend (not a special
one), there was a long line of cars travelling very
slowly from 13th Beach Golf Course turn off to the
Apco Service station.
Many mums with kids and other walkers are
pleased with the new crossings. For those of you
who want to drive through our little town and you
are in a hurry, please use the double roads on the
Ocean Grove side of Barwon Heads. For those of
you who are visiting, please be patient.
If coastal towns are to preserve their attractive
ambiance and not be urbanised with traffic lights
on every corner there needs to be a reasonable
balance between traffic and pedestrians and the
recognition of the right of pedestrians to cross
safety.
OUR NOVEMBER MEETING
Great to receive feedback that this was a nice and
friendly meeting with a very good vibe)
NEW DEMOCRACY 100 PERSON JURY
We welcomed Christine Smith, a Barwon Heads
resident who is on the jury. (One of 2 from BH out of a
total of 105). Christine described the process and
methodology followed. We shared the view of the
Administrators' that we are just one of many villages in
the CoGG district, and were surprised that a number
of Geelong notables are strongly supporting the notion
of a single ward Council. Christine was unable to
share much of the behind the scenes detail, however
some of us are still very wary of the process and
wonder whether the concept of a Bellarine Council ,
put forward by us and supported by the Victorian
Electoral Commission is now gone. We are not sure
that a council model that has no wards will provide the
representation smaller communities on the Bellarine
are entitled to. It was noted that the Surf Coast tried
this and it failed.
BARWON COAST Gary McPike the General
Manager of Barwon Coast also spoke at our meeting.
Gary reminded us that Barwon Coast is responsible
for our beaches, foreshore, camping areas, the port of
Barwon Heads and significant amount of parking and
other facilities such as toilet blocks and bbqs. These
services are all paid for by revenue generated from
camping on the reserves. During the year Barwon
Coast rebuilt part of the seawall, is currently capping
the bluestone wall, and has started to replace the
stairs at 31W, which were washed away last year in
the storms. Major projects in the community include

the Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club and the

Barwon Heads Football and Netball Club. The Barwon
Coast Coastal Management Plan is being updated for
the third time and its success is heavily dependent on
hearing from our community; what do you cherish
about our beaches and foreshores; what are the
threats; what can be done better; what is being done
well now.
Barwon Coast want to hear from you. Community

FIREWORKS - Shane Madigan has confirmed that
the Police and CFA would not be supporting the
traditional midnight fire works on New Years Eve on
the Bellarine, and that this decision has been
conveyed to Barwon Coast. The police have
suggested fireworks at 10:00pm with a focus on family
and friends enjoying the show. Barwon Coast has
agreed to this. Many are disappointed, as the New
Years Eve fireworks have been a tradition in Barwon
Heads for many years and something we all look
forward to. We tried to convince the Police to change
their minds but we failed.

our offer of a Gift Voucher from the Op Shop.

Thanks to the generosity of our many donors, we have
just so much to offer, from a very "expensive" boxed
new vase at $40, to many new pieces of jewellery at
$1 each. The great advantage of our vouchers is that
the recipient can make their own choice, and that they
will know they are helping a very worth cause.
Our giving at this time of year reflects the money

CHRISTMAS GIFTS
At this time of the year, most of us are
making plans, buying gifts, and generally
looking forward to Christmas 2016.
I would like to think that many of us also remember
that the first gifts, of gold, frankincense and myrrh
were to a baby who was really a refugee, whose
parents had to flee his home-land when he was only a
baby!
To us, 2016 years later, the constant arrival of
catalogues of possible gifts we might buy is more
often a reminder of how very commercialised this
season has become. I'd like to remind you that if you
have someone for whom the buying of a gift becomes
more difficult each year, you might think of taking up

in each area of the shop, but of the 50% which is

given to the community at this time the largest single
amount, $5000, was given to the Barwon Heads
Primary School in response to a very special appeal
made to us.
It is hoped that the school will appoint a
Welfare/Guidance Officer for 2027, as the need for
such a person is seen as very necessary. When I
consider how sophisticated many children seem these
days, with their technological skills which never cease
to astound me, I sometimes wonder how there could
be such a need. But these very factors mean that
children nowadays are open to so many less desirable
influences. When I was at school, we were simply told
to yell at a tormentor, "Sticks and stones will break my
bones, but names will never hurt me"!!! Sadly those
days have gone the way of our being allowed to
wander where we wished, and to being able to trust
most adults we met.
On that sombre note, may I wish you all a safe, joyful
Christmas time, and please come to see us at the Op
Shop during the school holiday period when we open
Tuesday till Saturday from 9.30 a.m. till 1 p.m.
God bless you,

This represents the huge amounts of goods donated

to us, but even more, the tremendous amount of work
done by our volunteers. The full list of organisations to
which we give money can be seen in notices we place

MIDWEEK LADIES
Midweek Ladies' season finished with a bang!
We had four teams entered this winter season and three of them made the finals. Section 5 Blue reached the semi-final, Section
9 was runner up in the Grand Final and Section 10 won a heart throbbing Grand final in a playoff after the final result was a draw.
Congratulations to Sue Rawling, Kim Pate, Janet Agg and Maz McIntosh and emergencies Sally Read and Wendy
Barham.
After being 6 games down going into the final 2 sets, our girls managed a draw. Sue and Maz won the play off, 6 games to 3. The
midweek teams celebrated in the Old Piano Bar at the Barwon Heads Hotel. A great turn out, and a huge thank you to supporters,
players and all those who helped out during the season.
If you feel motivated to have some fun and fitness then join our midweek competition for next summer season commencing in February. Ring Maz on 0409405044.

JUNIORS
Junior competition is in full swing with 10 enthusiastic teams battling it out every
Saturday morning. The kids are showing great improvement and more
importantly are showing excellent signs of good sportsmanship, which is one of
the key values the club is trying to install in all kids who represent our club.
Our section 2 boys team are playing strong and consistent tennis and are
holding on to third spot on the ladder. Similarly section 22 boys are having a great
season and are in third position.
A huge thank you to all parents who put their hand up to manage our teams, and
another big thank you to all parents who have arrived on time for early starts.
Each Saturday morning we have a BBQ and the parents assistance with this
task, and the cleaning up duties which has been greatly appreciated. Like any
club run by volunteers, if parents don't help out, then the kids don't get to play
such sports. Our last game before our holiday break is December 10th and we
hope all the kids enjoy their break and come back in the new year with the same
enthusiasm they have been displaying.

SENIORS
We have three sides entered in the senior Saturday competition: Sections 3, 4
and 12. Section 3 are holding on to fourth position on the ladder and the second
half of the season will be an interesting one for this mixed team.
We hope you enjoy a hit over the summer months, if the courts are looking busy
and you would like to utilise the members courts, consider becoming a social
member : follow the links on our website: www.tennis.com.au/barwonheadstc
Next year we hope to finalise our plans for renovating our club house, if you are
able to donate your service, equipment or time we would love to hear from you.

solutions

Many of you out there will know that at Barwon Heads Primary School we have
introduced Positive Education as our new approach to teaching wellbeing. Based on
the work of Martin Seligman,
Positive Education is derived from Positive Psychology, and
can equip children with a toolbox of strategies and
understandings that they can use throughout the different
stages of life to assist them in living happier and flourishing
lives. Based on the 24 character strengths as outlined in the
VIA character strengths survey, students learn to identify and
discuss their own character strengths and spot them in others
so they can focus on the best qualities of people rather than
the worst.
Our teachers immerse students in lessons and activities
designed to not only teach character strengths but to engage
them in a positive culture of well-being and love of learning.
Strengths like teamwork, courage and kindness are highlighted in all facets of
learning.
Weekly awards are given out to students in each class for displaying the character
strength of the week. Peers and teachers look for these strengths in students and
vote for who they think best displays the qualities of that strength.
In term 3 and beginning of term 4, we were
privileged to have Martin Heppell from The
Resilience Project come and present to our
students, staff and parents about the virtues of
Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional
literacy which are all facets of a positive approach
to life.

At Barwon Heads our Positive Education leader Lisa Kebbell has embraced
the approach and is leading our school community into the fantastic world
of Mindfulness, Engagement, Positive Emotion, Accomplishment and
Relationships as represented in our very own model in the starfish at right.
Together with her daughter Sophie, and our
wonderfully talented art teacher Jon Phillips, a set of our own images for the 24
character strengths have been created and are to be introduced in a set of cards
for 2017.
Upon returning in 2017, we will be learning how to live in the moment and
decrease stress by engaging in the practice of Mindfulness. Teachers and
students will be involved in sessions presented by Janet Etty-Leal, who is an
expert in this area.
Our school community has embraced Positive Education as an exciting and
proactive approach to teaching well-being and we look forward to the new
learning and understandings that come with it in the future as we explore all
facets of this wonderful model.

Connecting with your Kids

As parents, we naturally want the best for our children. We want them to have happy, safe and rewarding lives filled with possibilities. A
large part of their lives is school where they learn to be literate and numerate. There are so many wonderful teachers and schools
doing a terrific job to help our children learn these skills. These skills that our children are taught in school are important for them to
participate in their futures, but are they enough?
'Life skills', also known as 'soft skills' are vital for our children to succeed in the futures they design for themselves. Life skills are often
learnt later on in life on the job by trial and error. They require individuals to be adaptable or to, so to speak, 'read the play'. Life skills
are the people skills that enable us human beings to be able to socialise, communicate and interact with each other in harmony.
There are so many benefits for our children in learning these life skills at an early age. And, more than all that, being connected as a
family is one of the most special things that can be experienced in life.
I have been teaching primary school aged children for over a decade. I have also worked in adult education. Prior to that, I spent many years in hospitality, mainly front-ofhouse. There is nothing more satisfying for me than to work with people. I love connecting with people of all ages, people from different backgrounds, people from different
countries and cultures, people from all walks of life. I am a stand for people being a part of a loving and connected family.
With the holiday season upon us, this month you might like to try some of these things at home as a family to foster the wonderful life skill of creativity.....

Play 'Charades' by acting out words and syllables in the title of a movie, a song or a book.

Open a book and quickly point to a word without looking. Tell a one-minute story that includes your word.

Play 'Mr. Squiggle'... one person quickly draws a squiggle on a piece of paper and passes it along for the next person to complete the drawing.

Build something together with Lego, paper, playing cards, play doh or modelling clay.
Have fun connecting with your kids. For further information, see my Facebook page 'Connecting with your Kids'.
Cheers,
Andy McNeilly

So, theres a local social media news-feed

that I follow for all my need-to-know local
advice.
It tells me whos playing at The Chicken
Shop and where I can get the best spray
tan. It asks me if I know who owns this dog
and shows me the most brilliant sunrises
across our coastline. It celebrates local wins
and commiserates local losses.
And seems to connect every conceivable
dot in between.
Last Saturday afternoon, I was kicking back
with a chai and lazily scrolling down my local
social media news. It asked me to be aware
of blue bottles and the oncoming schoolies
while asking me who was the best carpet
cleaner in town. And then my local newsfeed informed me of an unmarked police car.
One set up on Sheepwash road. With a big
black camera measuring everyones
Saturday speed, set up on its dashboard on
the front.
Apparently it had been there all day. And by
the time I was scrolling down my phone, it
was 4pm. Meaning I had driven the
Sheepwash gauntlet up and back, in front of
the said camera, while running late. A road
where I know the speed limit is 50, but I
think I might have been doing 55. So that
every km I thought I may have driven over
the legal limit, would each cost me about 40
bucks.

revenue raising strategies.

Every day this week, I have held
my breath as I checked my
letterbox. Cursing myself for my
two hundred dollar sting.
Berating myself about my 3
demerit point slap. But every
time I opened the letterbox,
there was nothing untoward.
Making me to do a happy dance on the front
footpath, and twirl my dancing feet and
empty hands inside.
But on Friday, it was there. The
unmistakable, side opening envelope. With
the sinister green VicRoads emblem
brazen across the top left hand side. It
sucked my happy dance dry and made me
drag my doleful feet in a sulk. While
dragging the weight of the inevitable
envelope inside.
After staring at the un-touched emblem, with
my dented pride firmly in my slowly sinking
stomach, I opened the envelope.
To find my rego.
And even though it was going to cost me
$680 - about $500 more than I had originally
expected - I pushed my sickened stomach
aside and did my happy dance in the
kitchen.
Think seated twists, standing strength and
earth based backbends.

Or even the arrogance trump, why arent the

police out there catching real criminals. To
the point where we continually point outward
and dread the future so much, that we feel
pretty sick inside. Our stomach becomes a
cluster of barbs and our head feels like a
jungle of woes; we can feel our mood spiral
inwards and downwards so fast,
it leaves us feeling heavy and lost inside.
We are now turning the circle towards the
light and spark of Summer. Its a time where
deadlines and demands have the potential to
press us out of known spaces and
comfortable places. Our bodies throw out the
same stress hormones whether we are faced
with a perceived speeding fine or a maneating lion. This is because our stress
response is pretty bad at distinguishing
between daily life stresses and life
threatening events. These fight-flight
hormones pumping through can affect our
short-term memory, make it hard to
concentrate and fuel thoughts about worry
and anxiety. Feeding into further internally
generated stress responses - which may be
completely irrational, unregulated and
untrue.
I spent a week being strung out by a
speeding fine that never came. Because
even though I was running late, and even
though I didnt use cruise control, I was
somehow driving at the correct speed for the
Sheepwash zone.

Sometimes we can get so strung out by what

OUR FOCUS IS ON YOU!

High quality dental care, service and results.

We are transparent about our treatment processes and
the affiliated expenses, and will never proceed to treatment
unless you are fully informed of all aspects.
We accept all health funds and we can claim on the spot with Hicaps.
We also accept VET affairs, VEDS (Victorian Emergency Dental Services)
and VGDS (Victorian General Dental Services) forms.

Ten things your dentist can tell

you about your general health.
The health of your mouth reflects your overall
health and wellbeing. Your dentist is checking
for more than just cavities at your check-up.
Below are a few things that your dentist can
spot.
1) You are anaemic- Low iron levels often
present in the mouth as pale gums, ulcers
or sores in the corner of the mouth.
2) How well you are managing your
diabetes If your blood sugar levels are
poorly controlled this can present as
worsening of gum disease and even lead to
gum abscesses. Also, poorly controlled
diabetes can also lead to poor healing after
dental treatment.
3) Stress- A lot of people clench and grind
their teeth when under stress. Clenching
and grinding leads to wear on your teeth
and often soreness in the jaw and neck
muscles.
4) Pregnancy- A common sign of
pregnancy is gingivitis. So it is common to
get increased swelling and bleeding of your
gums if you are pregnant.
5) If you are suffering from Reflux- Acid
Reflux shows up as wear on the inside
surfaces of your teeth. If this is an ongoing
problem, your dentist can suggest ways to
reduce the damage to your teeth.
6) Mouth cancer- Dentist's can spot
suspicious areas in your mouth or on xrays. Some mouth cancers are secondary
metastases from other cancers in the body.
7) If you are a smoker- Heavy smokers
usually get tobacco stains on their teeth.
Smokers also are more prone to gum
disease.
8) Intestinal and auto-immune diseases-

Diseases such as colitis often present as

ulceration in the mouth. Some skin
conditions also have characteristic lesions
occur in the mouth.
9) Sinusitis- Sinusitis is an infection in the
bone spaces (the sinus') of your jaw, this
often presents as a toothache or a cloudy
sinus on an x-ray.
10) Dry mouth- a reduction in saliva
produced is usually a side effect from
medication but can also be a sign of
certain gland diseases.

News from the Beaches and Coastal Environs

Barwon Coast is a Committee of

Management appointed by the State
Government with responsibility for the
management of 13km of coastal crown
land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue
Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our
beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove,
Barwon Heads and 13 t h Beach.
Our Committee members are local residents appointed
with consideration of the skills and experience that they
have to offer in the management of this important piece
of coastline.

A NEW COASTAL MANAGEMENT

PLAN
Barwon Coast is about to begin the first phase of our
community engagement for the new Coastal
Management Plan (CMP).
Coastal Crown land Committees of Management rely on
a CMP for their primary strategic agenda. A requirement
of the Coastal Management Act 1995, CMP's are
essentially an agreement between the government, the
committee and its stakeholder community on how the
reserves will be managed.
For the Committee of Management, CMP's provide
direction and a business plan for achieving outcomes
and actions identified in the plan.
Essential for developing a strong and responsive CMP is

comprehensive community
stakeholder engagement.
We want to hear from you,
our community about what
you value and cherish about
your foreshores and
beaches that are managed
by Barwon Coast; we want to
hear about what concerns
you, and what ideas you
have.
Community Open Houses
are planned for Barwon
Heads at the Barwon
Heads Caravan Park
Football Club Rooms, on
Wednesday 7th of
December between 3:30 &
7:00 pm and at Ocean
Grove Senior Citizens 101 The Terrace, Ocean
Grove, the following week on Wednesday 14th
between 3:30 & 7:00 pm.
Managers, Committee Members and consultants
Arup and Hansen Partnership, will be on hand to
discuss any aspect of Barwon Coast's work.
Please drop in, even if only for a few minutes, and
get some information on the many ways you can be
involved.

OUR ENVIRONMENT:
Blue Bottle Sea Jellies:
Blue Bottle Sea Jellies have arrived along our
shores. These animals, yes not a single animal, are
a colony of four kinds are at the mercy of the winds.
Each animal is dependent on the other for survival.
For example, the float is a single individual, the
tentacles are another animal that detects and
captures food, transferring it to the digestive
animals. When the stinging capsule is stimulated, it
turns itself right side out. The tubes are armed with
spines or barbs that penetrate and anchor on a
victims flesh releasing a toxic mixture of phenols
and proteins. Blue bottles even on the shore can still
inflict a painful sting. If stung, remove the animals
from the victim using tweezers or gloved hand.
Wash the affected area with lots of sea water and
cover with ice-pack or pour tolerable hot water on
the site; be careful that the water is not too hot. If
swelling of the face, difficulty breathing occur or
signs of reaction call emergency on 000

Dogs on Our Beaches:

Meet the Neighbours is a community event taking place
on Saturday December 3rd at 13W beach access way
Hodgson Street Ocean Grove. We welcome all beach
users to come on down for a chat about anything coastal,
wild or doggy. The day will provide interactive activities
and test your knowledge and skills. This is a free
community event for the community. Lets work together
to all gain greater understanding of marine and coastal
environments and how we can all share this important
resource together.

New Year's Eve Fireworks:

Barwon Coast working with Bellarine Police, CFA and
other community members are celebrating New Year's
Eve with fireworks at 10pm. All the other usual measures
will be in place at Ocean Grove main beach to ensure
people celebrate in a safe manner. Road access to the
main beach car park will be closed from 6pm; The Wave
Church (Ocean Grove Baptist Church) will be assisting
providing a free sausage sizzle and free water on the
night and Barwon Coast have engaged St Johns
Ambulance to be present for the majority of the evening.
On behalf of Barwon Coast please celebrate safely.

Bird Sighting
A local resident identified an Eastern Koel in his garden.
Eastern Koels are a migratory cuckoo that flies to
Australia around September. Coming from New Guinea,
Indonesia and possibly the Phillipines, and can remain
till March next year. Different to our resident Ravens,
that has a dark bill and lacks the red eye. Their diet
mainly consists of fruits. It is a brood parasite, laying its
eggs in with other bird species such as Red Wattlebirds
and Magpie Lark.
DUNE SURFING
Our fragile dunes along 13th are protected by fencing
and our community is well served with steps & paths with
which to access the beach.
As visitors arrive for summer, it is timely to remind
everyone that....
Surfing or playing in the dunes must be discouraged at all
times.
Thanks for your
attention to and
co-operation with

The Sensory Garden

Jason ONeill

Look at all those grapes!

They are an acquired taste, but to the
converted, they are quite addictive.
3) Several years ago, we planted a
grapevine near our outdoor
kitchen/shelter. It has now grown
amazingly, covering the borders of the
shelter, providing shade, and now shows
the prospect of bountiful fruit. Patience,
we must wait till autumn.

2.
Artichokes galore!

Progress on Projects
While quick results are always
encouraging, some projects take time to
come to fruition (pardon the gardening
pun!) Here are updates on some of our
longer term projects.
1) Sensory Garden: This project,
situated right by our front gate, is a joy
to behold! Developed as a tribute to
Joanne Smith, late daughter of a
garden stalwart Carmel Smith, it
provides tactile, olfactory and visual
delight to all entering the garden. This
year's blooms are glorious indeed.

2) Globe artichokes are very slow

to mature, but when they finally
do.YUM. We have five plants, which
are currently in full flower/fruit.

4.
One apple tree takes shape

4) Over the last 3 years, we have

worked to espalier a row of apple trees
along our eastern boundary. Drastic
pruning has been needed at times, but
the trees are now taking shape, and look
like producing quite a crop next autumn.
In addition, they provide much-needed
wing shelter along this side.
I could go on, there are many other
projects that are coming to maturity, and
other pipe dreams in the minds and
hearts of our members. We are lucky to
be blessed with such a dedicated, hardworking group of Garden members.
Come along and stroll around, and see
for yourself what the power of many can
achieve!

VIETNAMESE CUISINE COMES TO BARWON HEADS

Hoi An in Vietnam is a wonderfully
preserved 16th-century trading port on
the banks of the Thu Bon river with
genteel, lantern-lit streets, tailor shops and
leather outlets. This is where Hong Lee
(pronounced Hom) was born and grew up.
As I sit in Barwon Heads newest restaurant, Hanoi
Kitchen, witwith Nick Lee, sipping delicious French Earl
Grey Leaf tea from a very pretty mug, he tells me the
delightful story of how he and Hong met.
After working in many high end 4 & 5 star hotels around the world, (a great story in itself) mostly as a troubleshooter,
Nick met Hong at the Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort, they fell in love and after a suitably respectful courtship with a lot
of hand holding, they married and continued to travel where Nicks work took them and Hongs food found its way
onto the menu of many of the restaurants Nick worked in. Theyve lived in Barwon Heads a few times as Nicks
parents, Jenny and Gary live here. So when the opportunity came up for them to fulfill a dream of opening their own
restaurant, and now with two children needing kinder and school, this was a perfect place for them to settle.
Hong and her staff are quietly prepping in the spotless kitchen as the place starts to fill up. Weve been hammered
since the day we opened the doors three weeks ago Nick tells me laughing and as I look around, I recognise quite a
few people enjoying their pho, bahn mi, rice paper rolls and other authentic Vietnamese meals.
I ate the Pho Bo in the picture and it was beautiful
with warming, deep flavours and I know my pho!

Its soothing watching the fuss free way Hong goes about her
business, friendly yet efficient, graciously offering me food,
ever the generous host.
The comments and reviews from diners have been very
positive and you can like them on facebook to follow their
news.
Nick tells me that they will have an always fresh living
menu while keeping our favourites. It will change seasonally,
giving us new options to keep our taste buds tingling.
Each of our cafes gives us something unique and were lucky
to have such great offerings in our village...

Wagner in Paris
and Barwon Heads!
On Saturday 11 February BHFMS will launch their 2017
season with the acclaimed new play Wagner in Paris
which debuted at the Melbourne Recital Centre in
November 2016.
Interwoven with Wagner's early vocal compositions and
French art songs, actors chronicle his triumphs and
failures as he attempted to charm Parisian society with
his music and powerful personality in the early 1840s.
Featuring Opera Australia singers including local Surf
Coast soprano Wendy Grose, this special one-night-only
performance at the Barwon Heads Community Hall will
mark the beginning of a regional tour before heading to
the UK and Europe at the end of 2017.
Booking details will be available in January, so watch

WHAT YOU TOLD US

UPDATE on the Engagement Activities of October & November
MAINTAINING THE SETTLEMENT BOUNDARY is the
greatest challenge for the community - stemming from pressures to rezone
land for housing. In particular the lack of infrastructure and capacity for
growth due to the size of the town centre and limits of community facilities,
Barwon Heads is not a growth location and is sandwiched between two
signicant housing growth areas, the threat to the sense of place and the
potential cost to the unique environment.
A VILLAGE COASTAL CHARACTER was seen as important
to most of you. The need for some form of planning controls for residential
character requested by most people; although there was mixed feedback
over how much would be appropriate. Building height, site cover and building
bulk, the need for vegetation/ landscaping and the retention of informal
streetscapes were key opportunities for introducing planning controls. The
extent of the Residential Growth Zone was also an area of concern. Hansen
Partnership and Council are currently working on options for planning
controls in response to feedback.
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND PARKING is one of the
biggest challenges for Barwon Heads in the town centre and at 13th Beach.
This is an increasing problem that is particularly bad during the peak holiday
season, many weekends, holiday weekends and school holidays. Many
people did comment that is wasnt a problem for them as they frequently
cycled or walked to popular areas - or people are happy to park away from
the main street and walk a couple of blocks. A number of opportunities were
suggested such as a Park and Ride for visitors, better parking enforcement
and better requirements for parking through planning permits.
SAFE PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLE networks across the town
is an issue and there are opportunities to increase the provision - those who
cycle are increasing and at the same time safety is perceived to be waning.

THANK YOU to everyone

who got involved with the
HELP SHAPE THE PLACE
engagement activities in
October and November.
The Shape the place
workshops attracted over
120 participants.
We also received over 130
of your submissions.
A SUMMARY OF ALL FEEDBACK FROM THE
WORKSHOPS AND SUBMISSIONS IS NOW
AVAILABLE. You can also access a full unedited
version of all the feedback received.
Please go to www.geelongaustralia.com.au and
visit the Barwon Heads Structure Plan Update
2016 page.
Or phone Bernadette Notting on 5272 5078 to obtain
a hard copy version of the Summary of Submissions.
FOR MORE INFORMATION:

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT is highly valued by the community and

denes the town - the river, coastline and internationally signicant wetlands.
Many people expressed concerns over the threat development could have on
these important areas that make Barwon Heads unique.

SERVICES for the town are generally appropriate when reecting on the
size of the town - provided the town size stays as it is. A number of people
commented on the need for a community hub to support community art and
the limitations on the size of the current library at the school.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR THE STRUCTURE PLAN

UPDATE?

OTHER ISSUES raised include the need for planning controls for
the Warrenbeen Court area, uncertainty as to why Council would consider
rezoning land for Stage C - 13th Beach Resort, the need to protect heritage
and vegetation, concerns over stormwater runoff to sensitive environments
and the protection of open space and recreation areas.

Feedback from the Help Shape the Place engagement

for the Structure Plan Update will now be used to
informed the preparation of a Draft Structure Plan. It is
anticipated that this will be completed in March/ April
2017. You will have the opportunity to have your say
on this draft document.

In search of Gorillas in the mist!

Rosie ready to hike

Seeing the Mountain Gorillas in the wild is truly a bucket-list' travel experience for many people.
There are only around 800 Mountain Gorillas left in the wild, all found in the thick jungle and mountains of Uganda,
Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Not just anyone can go in search of these Gorillas in the wild. In Uganda,
only 24 lucky travellers get the opportunity each day, and the $1000 gorilla
permits (profits of which go to conservation efforts) sell out months in
advance. I was lucky enough to secure one, and to go in search of these
Gorillas earlier in November.

The mountains looked ominous in the morning mist. We were given a

briefing before our trek, filled with jokes about what to do if we need the
toilet, and not to take offence if our porter gives us a regal push - a big
push up the bottom to help us up the steep parts!
We then started the climb, up, up, up, through thick jungle, accompanied by
an expert local Guide, a porter each to carry our bag and steady us, and 3
trackers carrying AK47s just in case.
As the Gorillas dont stay in one place, a trek to find them could take 20 minutes, or it could take 8 hours. Luckily for us, we found
them after an hour of climbing. Once found, there are strict rules dictating that you can only spend a precious 1 hour with these
special primates. And so we watched, standing only 1 - 2 metres away from these gentle giants, going about their daily business. Mum tending to child and young adults
climbing trees and playing. Some just lounging around eating leaves and preening each other.
At one point we heard a muffled roar from about 15 metres away. It was the big daddy, the Silverback, standing on his
hind legs, giving an almighty roar and beating his chest. King Kong!
We had to stifle our chuckles as we watched a cheeky teenager climb a tree and move onto a spindly branch. The
branch, not being able to hold his weight, came falling down, knocking me on the head, and sending the Gorilla
toppling a few metres down the hill!
A few minutes later, the same cheeky chimp spotted some particularly tasty branches he wanted, with just one thing in
his way, a pesky tourist! Not to worry, with his sights firmly set on the branches, he bowled the poor girl over, getting to
his branches in no time!
These creatures are majestic, placid and really just like us and I was incredibly lucky to be one of the few people in the
world to have seen the Gorillas in the wild.

Barwon Heads has a new Pan Pacific jiu jitsu champion! Jason trained hard for
months leading up to this international Brazilian jiu jitsu federation event and
won gold in his weight division and got silver in the open weight division. Not
bad for a 45 year old!
Congratulations Jason (and on getting rid of the Geelong Star!)

The structure of a future Council is not a simple matter. Local Government Victoria
commissioned for a jury process; to bring together a random but representative group
of residents to make recommendations to State government on how we should be
democratically represented by a future Council. 15,000 jury invitations were sent to
random Greater Geelong residents. Less than 1,500 responded. 100 people were
selected. We have heard from community leaders and received extensive
documentation including what didnt work within our past Council structure. Our
unedited report is tabled to parliament representing both practical and aspirational
recommendations. One debate related to Mayoral selection. I believe that all
candidates should first demonstrate evidence of good governance including financial
literacy and be endorsed by 50+ members across our community before he or she
can nominate. The Mayor should be publically elected by the people of Greater
Geelong so that everyone can vote.

BARWON HEADS CRICKET CLUB

Well didn't the international summer of
cricket start beautifully.
Within only an hour or so of the beginning of the game
the South Africans were in dire trouble and went to lunch
on the first morning needing a huge fight back to make
the summer a happy time for them.
Day one of the summer looked like this...

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat

The Proteas collapsed to 4-32 inside 13 overs
Lunch score: 4-78
Bavuma and de Kock hit half-centuries in second
session
Tea score: 7-175
Proteas all out for 242, Starc's figures 4-71
Australia raced to 0-105 by stumps, Warner 73 not
out.
Cricket must have seemed an easy game at
that point of the match for the Australian XI and winning
the match and sending the Proteas home for Christmas
with a hole in their stockings must have felt a mere
formality.
Enter the cricket gods, and the rest as they
say is history. As a very wise wicket keeper (yes that's a
tautology, or is it an oxymoron?) once said to me,
Cricket is a funny game. Now as I type this, half the

team are out and a whole lot of new fellows

only the selectors have heard of are in the team for the
next test. The South Africans have not lost a single
session since day one of the first test and the Australian
selectors have embarked on a rebuilding program
where they appear to be content to have the team finish
in the bottom four and go to the draft. Sorry, wrong
game, but I mentioned cricket is a funny game and my
bet is that anything is possible.
On the local front the game's not getting any
more predictable. One week our teams are able to
dominate their opponents and the next week we find
ourselves humbled. I guess it's all about the numbers
and having the same team week in and week out and
having confident players in good form, playing with
other confident players in form and those players having
confidence in one another and the plans and processes
of the team. From time to time we have that mix and the
results are outstanding, but occasionally the mix gets
fractured by loss of personnel, loss of confidence, loss
of form or a combination of any of those. The trick is to
rise above that and to find a way to play your best
despite the challenges.
At this stage of the season the senior teams
are all mid table with matches against the top sides
behind them and looking for some improved form going
into the Christmas break. Junior teams are doing ok as

well with the Under 13s and Under 15s

having some mixed results. In Under 13s BHCC Hyland
are currently 2nd and BHCC Goddard are 4th, while BHCC
Under 15s have had a couple of fighting losses against
strong opposition and have had some issues with player
availability, but are on the improve and determined to
fight hard in all matches.
Of course there are the social notes to attend
to and we have the usual madness of competing
Christmas school concerts, work breakups, court parties
and sporting club get-togethers to negotiate our own
minds and bodies through as well as those of the rest of
the family and the BHCC is no exception with the annual
Christmas party planned for Saturday 17th December.
Keep an eye on social media for further details. Last
year's celebration was a wonderful night and the
weather and the watering system were very kind to us.
Please come along if you have that evening free.
Finally on the subject of Christmas, please
everyone have a safe and happy end to the year, but
don't forget us for the rest of the month.
The fridge is still keeping the drinks cold and
the welcome is still warm so come on down for a chat.
More next month.

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

Chase the Dog by Damian O'Malley
3 million Australians are living with depression or
anxiety.
At any given time, 1 in 5 employees are likely to be
experiencing a mental health condition.
Untreated mental health conditions costs Australian
employers $10.9 billion every year
What is mental health?
According to the World Health Organisation, mental
health is a state of well-being in which every individual
realises his or her own potential, can cope with the
normal stresses of life, can work productively and
fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his
community.
At BHCC, we identify with this definition and so October
saw 12 of the BHCC team participate in the annual
Chase the Dog fundraiser at Forest. It's now in its 3rd
year and is a fantastic fundraiser for Beyond Blue, hence
the opening statistics and quotes.
Chase the Dog is a non-competitive bike ride with a
spectacular 90km course through the beautiful Otways.
Taking in some of the best old logging routes of the
Otway Ranges, a mixture of rail trails, fire road and quiet
back country roads.
The description of Chase the Dog outline above is a cut
& paste from their website. It suggest a nice ride,
perhaps sunny weather, a slight refreshing breeze
That wasn't what happened this year.
A better description of this year's ride would have
been..
Chase the Dog is an opportunity to be buffeted by
freezing winds, to wade shin deep through flooded fire
tracks, to hear the hail stones as they pound your helmet
and feel the sting of the ice on your soaking cold face, to
have fingers so cold they remain in a fixed position and
to lose all feeling in your toes for 12 to 24
hoursThat's what it was like for about the first 3
hours through section 1, 2 & 3. If we had of seen the SAG
Wagon, we would have been on it, happily. It was slightly
disconcerting when one of the volunteers was checking
kids at the food station for signs of hypothermia, but
come on, don't kids have it too easy these days?!
No SAG Wagon, so on we went and wasn't it worth it!

Section 4, Turton's Track to Beech Forest, 18km

Turton's Track is without doubt one of the hidden gems
of the Otways. This sealed road was once a dirt road
that was only passable by 4WD. It winds its way gently
along the ridgeline dipping in and out of gulleys along
the way. With tall trees and tree ferns everywhere you
will need to remember to keep your eyes on the road
This is also a cut & paste from the website this time it's
true! Stunning ride - still bloody freezing though!
There were brief glimpses of something yellow in the
sky. We thought it might be the sun however as we had
just been told the temperature was 0.8C, we were a bit
skeptical that we would ever feel any warmth again.
Section 5, Beech Forest to Gellibrand, another 18km,
this time all downhill!!!!!!!
We were well over halfway and so there was no
stopping us now! An enticing mixture of lollies, hot
chips, hot tea, cricket flour eco bars, chocolate and
water fueled the body whilst the awesome scenery,
friendly spirit of all the riders and a growing sense of
achievement (accompanied by returning feeling in the
fingers and drying of clothes) filled the heart.
Riding back into the Forest Caravan Park was a great
feeling. A really terrific event for a very important cause
and one that we will definitely do again next year come
with us!
The Beyond Blue website is beyondblue.org.au - there
is some great information there so have a look.
Bicycle Network Surveys
On Sunday 13th November, the BHCC collected cycling
data for Bicycle Network. There were two collection
points; one on the Breamlea bike path and the other on
the bike path between the bridge and The Dunes. Apart
from counting bikes, walkers, runners and dogs, there
were supposed to be some unusual vehicles in the
'other' category. Last year on the Breamlea Bike path
were a couple of motorbikes; one pacing some cyclists
and another taking a short-cut. Near the dunes, a
couple of electric scooters were counted as well as
plenty of prams. This year was very quiet.
Damian said, I saw Greg, Graeme & Lawrie not sure
which category they fit into (some may qualify for more
than one category). Shane commented that there was
nothing interesting at all this year. Apparently he nearly

fell asleep. Gilly commented, The most interesting part

of the day (in a fairly uninteresting day) was watching a
motorbike cruise past on the bike track, knowing full-well
he wasn't meant to be on the bike track, and offering the
'inspectors' a very sheepish wave and smile as he drove
past (I had the power of the clipboard, but without a highvis vest, I had little hope apprehending him).
Christmas Party
The sixth annual BHCC event was held on Saturday 3rd
December. Starting in the afternoon, there were over 60
adults and kids riding from venue to venue around our
wonderful village with lights flashing and bells ringing.
Lots of fun, food and frivolity. There were even
professional signs put all over the region a month earlier
warning everyone about our event. Read about all the
shenanigans in the January edition of Talking Heads.
Bollards Revenge
The bollards finally have got their revenge on Nev.
From calling out Bollards Up for so many years, Nev
was riding along down the end of the street he actually
lives in, and he hit a bollard. Poor bugger. Pretty funny
though!
Well, if those words don't get you inspired to get out on
the bike, I'm not sure what will. That's it for December.
Have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year from
the BHCC team.
The only thing that I'd like to add is that the BHCC is the
best group of people around. A stack of the team came
over to help me re-roof my house a few weekends ago.
What a generous group of people. Some came for an
hour or two, a couple
came back later in the
afternoon for a second
shift (Jeff and Rog),
and Lawrie (the
legend) stayed all day.
No wonder the BHCC
is the best little cycling
club around.
Ty p i c a l o f t h i s
wonderful community
we live in.

SEAGULLS BASKETBALL CLUB

Well, what a great start to
the summer season.
We have had so many returning players
and exisiting teams moving through
divisions and up age groups. Its so
exciting watching the younger teams
improve and develop their skills each
season.
For the first time in Seagull history we have more
girl teams than boys! With two U10 teams and two
U12 teams the girls are dominating!!
It is so great to see the young girls giving it a go
and having so much fun doing it. Heres a photo of
the two U10 teams, Seagull Rose and Seagull
Purple! Check out those smiles! Most of these girls
are only 7 years old.
With the increasing Seagulls numbers and teams
that join the club each season, the committee is
always incredibly grateful for the amount of parent
and volunteer support. These young basketballs
would not be able to play without their parents coaching, team managing and of course chauffeuring them to and from the games and training. So a
massive thank you to all of you that give up your time each week to let these little basketballs and big basketballs play.
On behalf of the Seagulls Basketball Club, we would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas!

WORD ABOUT THE HOOD

For those readers who are new to the area,
the Hooded Plover is a small, timid,
endangered beach-nesting bird which is
indigenous to our local beaches.
(Not to be confused with the Masked Lapwing
which nests on footy ovals, roundabouts and
backyards and tends to be noisy and swooping.)
Hooded Plovers are the masters of camouflage and are well-adapted to life on the beach
that is, life on the beaches of 100 years ago.
Their once tranquil beach habitat has now been overwhelmed by people visiting the beach for
recreation, bringing all sorts of things that the birds are unfamiliar with dogs, horses, 4WDs,
beach balls, toddlers!
Hoodies now struggle to find a bit of undisturbed space on the beach to breed and because
their nesting failure rate is as high as 90-95%, their numbers are declining, as too few young
are added to the population to sustain it.
Birdlife Australia and hundreds of coastal volunteers are turning this dire situation around; by
monitoring hoodies and detecting when they have eggs or chicks and putting protective
management in place to relieve many of the human pressures.
Hooded Plovers lay their eggs directly on the sand in a simple, shallow nest scrape. The nest
can be anywhere above the high-tide mark, on the beach or in the dunes.
Hooded Plovers eggs are small (about the size of a 20-cent piece) and very well camouflaged;
so well camouflaged that they are easily trodden on by accident.
Egg incubation takes 28 days and if completed successfully, the tiny fluffball chicks hatch out
with surprisingly powerful legs. Adult hoodies don't feed their young; the chicks must fend for
themselves, feeding on the sandhoppers found in decomposing seaweed. With sufficient
undisturbed feeding time, growth is rapid and in just five weeks they can fly. During those five
weeks before flight, however, they are at their most vulnerable. When a chick is disturbed or
feels threatened it quickly runs into the sand dunes and hides. While it is running, the chick
uses up valuable energy, and while it is hiding it is unable to feed. A chick that is forced to run
and hide throughout the day because of human disturbance or by dogs could easily starve to
death!
With the longer days and warmer weather, the hoodies are finding their mates and are starting
to get serious about breeding.
Pair NZ & unb have had 4 nests fail already this season at Collendina, mostly due to fox
predation of their eggs.
Two of the other four pairs along the stretch of beach from Collendina to Point Lonsdale have
nests and so far at 13th Beach, 3 of the now 4 resident pairs have nests.
To reduce disturbance to the birds while they're breeding, please remember to leash
your dogs at this time whenever you approach or are in the Hooded Plover breeding
area.
