Micro-Analysis- Saving Private Ryan

This shot is a mid-shot which shows the memorial yard. In addition the camera movement is a following
pan which shows the whole memorial park this pan usually begins and ends with a few seconds of a still
picture to give greater impact to the shot. The speed of the pan across the park creates a particular mood

due to the graveyard connoting an emotional tone to the audience. Personally I would like to use a shot
like this in my own opening scene as we look to adapt on the graveyard scene as I believe it is very
powerful.

The close up shot of the old male character shows his face in great detail it abstracts the subject from a context Also a
close-up of a person emphasizes their emotional state. Whereas a mid-shot or wide-shot is more appropriate for
delivering facts and general information, a close-up exaggerates facial expressions which convey emotion. The
viewer is drawn into the subject's personal space and shares their feelings. In addition we can tell this is an ageing
character due to wrinkles and grey hair appearing in the close up which gives us a better idea of what the character
is feeling. The expression on the characters face creates an emotional impact on the reader too.
