Basic Features

Amplitude Scan (A-Scan)

Report Generator

The main features of the A-scan are the distanceamplitude correction (DAC) curves, symmetric
(black) signals and the flexural (red) signals.

Once the data has been analyzed by a trained

inspector, the data can be automatically compiled
into a single report which would include the
A-scans, reflection annotations and operator notes.

These features provide information about

the type of features or defects including
their location along the inspected pipe length
and an estimated cross-sectional change.
.

The report can be output into either PDF , Word

Document or Excel Spreadsheet format for flexibility.

WaveProTM
EFC Processing Licence

Unrolled Pipe Display (C-Scan)

Enhanced Focussing Capability (EFC) Licence activates the advanced post-processing data analysis which
involves generating a digital image of the unrolled pipe (C-scan).Through the C-scan, the defects and pipe
features can be easily located, including their orientation around the pipe circumference.
The C-scan is most effective when used with GULs EFC transducer rings. The example in the figure above
demonstrates how a defect can be easily be visualised and located on the pipe using the C-scan.

Absolute Calibration Licence

A-Scan with Absolute Calibration & Simulated Reverberation

The absolute calibration licence activates processing and DAC functionality required for automatic amplitude
calibration and reverberation simulation. It calculates the DAC amplitude levels on echoes received during
the test, resulting in accurate assessment of indications. The software checks whether absolute calibration
is valid for a given guided wave result.
Furthermore, a simulated reverberation feature calculates the positions and amplitudes of multiple echoes
and so assists in the identification of false echoes. The example in the figure above demonstrates how false
echoes can easily be identified by the simulated reverberation curve (Green Curve).

EFC Rings

R2F-LITE: Standard Solid EFC Rings

These transducer rings are typically used for standard screening of pipes with nominal size between 2 and 4
inches.
The rings are attached to the pipe by tightening the two large handles; this action presses the spring loaded
transducers onto the pipe to get good shear contact. As for the other rings produced by GUL, no couplant is
necessary and it is possible to couple through most paint layers.
The standard rings have 2 rows of transducers and are torsional mode. Special rings can be produced for
other sizes and for ones that contain 4 rows of transducers to allow for inspection using both the longitudinal
and torsional guided wave mode families. Prices for specials are by specific quotation.

EFC Rings

R2B-EFC: Inflatable EFC Rings

These transducer rings are designed to provide effective inspection capability, particularly for large diameter
pipes. Pneumatic pressure (approx. 2bars or 25psi) is used to press transducers modules (which are mounted
onto this ring) against the pipe wall.
The number of modules required to populate the ring is also specified. These modules are fully interchangeable
between inflatable collars therefore if sufficient modules are purchased to populate a 24-inch ring this will
allow population of all sizes up to 24-inch or a combination of smaller ones simultaneously.
For sizes greater than 24 inch diameter 2 smaller inflatable type rings can be linked together within the technical
limitations as detailed in specific procedure for joining rings.
Non-standard sizes (up to 60) and non-EFC rings can be produced to special order. Prices for specials are by
specific quotation.

Inflatable Rings
These modules contain a pair of transducers; they mount
onto the (R2B) inflatable collars and can be moved from
collar to collar to form a populated transducer ring.
The operating frequency range of these standard modules
covers the majority of standard above-ground pipe inspection
tasks.
When populating a collar, all of the modules must be the
same type.

HT Rings

R2F-HT: High Temperature (HT)

Solid Rings

These transducer rings are similar to the standard solid rings, but are capable of testing pipes operating at
up to 350oC when the HT procedure is used. The ring can be supplied for pipe sizes between 2 and 8 inches.
The HT transducers utilize the latest ceramic technology to minimise the negative temperature effects that HT
operation would typically have upon equipment life; and at the same time achieving an improved performance
over conventional designs.
Similar to the standard solid rings, the HT solid rings have 2 rows of transducers and are torsional mode.
Special rings containing 4 rows of transducers to allow for inspection using both the longitudinal and torsional
guided wave modes.

R2F-HT: HT Inflatable Rings

High temperature (HT) rings and modules are similar
to standard EFC inflatable rings, but are capable of
testing pipes operating at up to 350oC (provided that
the ring is removed from the pipe within 15 minutes of
being applied). In order to carry out the guided wave
inspection on hot insulated pipes, typically only a 0.5
meter wide strip of insulation needs to be removed and
the ring dry coupled to the pipe surface.

HD Rings

R2F-HD: High Definition (HD)

Solid Rings

This type of ring has been developed to utilize the high frequency range available with the Wavemaker G4 and
G4mini for applications where higher sensitivity and resolution is required as opposed to longer range. Such
applications are typically interface penetrations, supports and inspection for localised pitting.
The operation of the HD solid rings is similar to the standard solid rings, which has 2 rows of transducers for
torsional mode excitation.
Additionally, GUL can supply the HD solid rings with HT-HD transducers for the operation at the elevated
temperature of up to 350oC.

HD Rings

R2B-HD: HD Inflatable Rings

The HD inflatable ring has been developed for the
same applications as the HD solid rings where higher
sensitivity and resolution is required, and where the pipe
sizes are larger than 6 inches.
Normally, the ring is used with the HD modules for HD
applications, but it is also compatible with other types
of module for standard long range pipeline inspections.
The use of this type of transducer ring requires the
Wavemaker G4 together with the medium frequency
option, or the Wavemaker G4mini.

R2L: Low Profile Rings

The low profile (or Slinky) rings were specifically designed
to be able to fit around pipes that have a very limited radial
clearance (for example those commonly found in culverts
or pipe racks). Typically less than one inch of clearance is
required to be able to mount the rings. They are only available
in EFC wiring configurations and diameters up to 8.
Due to their design the low profile rings cover a smaller pipe
size range than the traditional solid rings. The standard low
profile rings are configured for API nominal pipe sizes (within
an API 5L tolerance); these will often not fit correctly on the
similar (but not exactly the same size) DIN specified pipes
(even if the equivalent solid ring does fit).

gPIMS

R2P : gPIMS Permanently

Installed Sensors

In many situations, the cost of accessing a pipe is much higher than the cost of inspection. This access cost
can make repeat inspections with removable rings prohibitively expensive.
The gPIMS range of sensors has been developed to be bonded onto the pipe, sealed and then left in place.
A cable connects the gPIMS sensor to a connection box that can be located in a convenient, easy to access
location.
By performing repeat inspections and comparing the results to previous inspections, improved sensitivity and
confidence in the calls can be achieved. It also allows the operator to monitor for any change in the condition
of the pipe.
This design makes site installs reliable and fast. It also facilitates installation by rope access.
