Which type of cup insulates a liquids heat most efficiently a tumbler, a thermos cup and a
Styrofoam cup.

1.

This is important to the world because it will allow people all around the world know which
type of cup will keep their drinks hot for the longest period of time.

This experiment is about which type of cup insulates the best out of a thermos cup, a
Styrofoam cup, and a tumbler cup. This is important to people because it will allow them to
know which cup will help them keep there hot drinks hot most efficiently. I predict that the
thermos cup will insulate the most efficiently because from my research I know that a
thermos is surrounded by a vacuum which doesnt let any air escape. My independent
variable is the type of cup that is being tested. My dependent variable is how hot the liquid
still is after ten minutes of waiting. Finally my control variables are the amount of time the
liquid is in the cup, the temperature of the liquid, and the amount of liquid in each cup.

The hypothesis is that if you put hot liquid in different cups and then measure there
temperature then a thermos cup will insulate the hot water the best because thermos cups have
reflective mirrors inside of them that reflect the heat and they keep the hot air inside.

The materials required for this experiment are a stove, a thermos cup, a Styrofoam cup, a
tumbler cup, a pot, and a thermometer.

First you need to heat up a pot of water to 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Then you need to pour a

cup of the hot water into each of the three cups you have. Then you need to wait 10 minutes. After
the 10 minutes is up you need to take the temperature of the water in each of the cups. Then you
record the temperature of the water in each cup into your science notebook. Repeat this 14 more
times.

The results for the thermos cup were 171, 171, 172, 171, 173, 170, 171, 172, 170, 172, 173,
171, 171, 170, and 173. The results for the Styrofoam cup were 162, 161, 161, 160, 163, 162,
162, 161, 159, 162, 160, 161, 162, 161, and 160. Finally the results for the tumbler cup are
158, 158, 159, 158, 157, 159, 160, 158, 158, 158, 157, 159, 160, 159, 158, and 159.

Tumbler Cup

In conclusion my hypothesis was right that the thermos cup would insulate the best because it
barely allowed the liquid to lose temperature. While I was testing I was also suppressed that A
Styrofoam cup insulates more efficiently than a tumbler. Also another thing that I noticed is
that the results were quite consistent and I didnt have any outliers.
