Dear Dr. Bruce,

At the beginning of the semester you provided us with six student learning outcomes to
help guide us through the class. We were given many opportunities to show different ways in
which we write, both formally and informally. In order to show how I have accomplished and
succeeded in the student learning outcomes I have organized a writer's portfolio.
I have included my original editorial with your comments because it satisfies the student
learning outcomes of rhetorical focus (SLO 1), ethical citation (SLO 2), and persuasion (SLO 3).
The original editorial satisfies rhetorical focus because I wrote both formally and informally in
and out of class. The intended audience for my editorial was the average reader of the L.A Times
and the purpose of the editorial was to persuade readers on a certain topic. In my case that topic
was to legalize recreational marijuana in California. The editorial also satisfies SLO 2, ethical
citation, because writing the editorial required research. I had to find research that would support
my position and apply it in the editorial. I also had to be able to properly cite it according to APA
format. Lastly the editorial satisfies the 3rd SLO, persuasion because the purpose of the editorial
was to persuade readers on a certain topic. My stand was that California should legalize the use
of recreational marijuana, I persuaded readers into agreeing with me by talking about how
California would benefit economically and how there would be less aggressive enforcement
laws. I also provided counter arguments as to why marijuana should not be legalized.

The next document I have included is this cover letter because it satisfies the student
learning outcomes of organization (SLO 4) and language and design (SLO 5). The cover letter
satisfies SLO 4 because it was organized the way a letter should be. It has a recipient and address
at the top, addresses the person, and at the end has who the letter is from. The cover letter also
satisfies SLO 5 because it was written with appropriate academic language, and is written to
show sensitivity to gender and cultural differences.
Lastly I have included a peer review of my editorial. The peer review satisfies the student
learning outcome of collaboration (SLO 6). By having someone read and review my editorial it
provided me with feedback on my writing. It allowed someone to give me advice on things that
were good, but also things that needed to change. One example is how I was able to break up a
paragraph that had too much information and was better apart.
I believe that this class has allowed me to have a better understanding on writing. It's
allowed me to look at different ways to accomplish something like an editorial or a profile. I
hope the documents I have chosen show my understanding of the 6 student learning outcomes.

Sincerely,
Diana Roman
