Tena Koutou Whanau.

Measles is a notifiable and highly contagious disease.

Those of us born before 1969 all caught and suffered
from this disease there were no national campaigns
of immunisation until 1969.
Dr Clair Mills, the Public Health Director of Northland,
has advised all schools to communicate with their
communities about the outbreaks currently occurring
in Auckland and now Northland.
The fact of the matter is should we have one single
measles infected person in this school then all staff
and students unable to show an immunisation
certificate will be required to stay away from school
for 2 weeks. I have currently asked all staff to record
their immunisation status on a register for this
purpose. Staff are being encouraged to become
immunised to avoid being off work.
Should this school find we have a measles infected
person on the grounds and there are not enough
staff with immunisations to keep the school open
the school will be forced to close for a fortnight.
I write this to you so that you as parents understand
the importance of keeping your child immunised
against this disease.
We now immunise all people with a triple vaccine
Measles, Mumps and Rubella the MMR vaccination.
This is available from all medical centres and the
vaccination itself is free. Please ensure your child has
been vaccinated against this disease should we
have an outbreak here, students will not be allowed
back into school without a vaccination certificate
proving they are immunised.
We are having a Teacher Only Day this Friday 3 June.
This is the day of the Senior Ball and historically many
young women are absent so that they could have hair
appointments and the like in preparation for the
evening.
Schools are legally entitled to have days where
professional development occurs during the term

time, so previously the school administration decided

that Ball Day was a good solution to an attendance
issue that we couldnt solve.
All students will be required to remain at home this
Friday the 3rd June 2016.
As mentioned, Ball Day is an exciting evening for our
senior students. The Ball will be supervised by adults.
Yr13 are to arrive by 6.30pm and all others from 7pm.
The doors close at 7.30pm until the finish of the Ball
at 11pm. No students may leave before 11pm.
Kamo High School does not support, organise or
supervise any other function other than the Ball. All
after party functions are not part of the school
organisation and are not condoned by the school
Board of Trustees or staff. It is essential that as
parents you remain the adult in charge of your young
person from 11pm, the close of the school ball, until
they return to your home. It is a tragedy that young
people are hurt or killed by being unsupervised at
unregulated events where alcohol, illegal substances
and driving under the influence of substances occurs.
This is easily prevented by being an active and
responsible parent and ensuring the total safety of
your young women and men.
We know that while at the Ball our young people will
have fun and have a night to remember please help
them to make it so for all the right reasons.
Attendance of your young person is critical to their
success. We have been reviewing all unsatisfactory
attendance less than 90% - and making
appointments to see young people and their parents
about the issues of non-attendance. All attendance
less than 60% must beg the question about what a
young person is actually doing at school.
Unless they are medically impaired two days off a
week which is 60% attendance - must mean that a
young person is not committed to academic goals of
achievement at any level. All appropriate students in
this category will be having academic guidance with
the Yr13 Dean and contact made with home about

moving into course work or employment outside of

Kamo High School.

line at this event. The school loved it and were

delighted at the victory.

Last Friday the senior Boys Basketball Team, and

some of the staff competed against the Police
Basketball Team in the gym. Goodness what a hotly
contested game! The crowd was huge all cheering
for school, with oohs! and aahs! at every miss or
rebound. It was a very competitive encounter with
school finally coming out on top. Thanks to the
students and the staff for putting their bodies on the

developing their problem solving abilities, unleashing
their creativity and teaching them how to work as a

Smokefree Rockquest
Congratulations to cousins Izaia Tilialo (KHS) and Huia Shortland (Te Kapehu
Whetu Teina) who were winners of the Smokefree Rockquest Duo/Solo heats
on Saturday 21 May at Forum North. They now head straight into the
national final. Regionals were held on Friday 27 May 2016.

Senior Drama
On Thursday 19 May, students in the senior Drama
classes got the opportunity to go to Auckland to be in
the audience for "To Kill a Mockingbird". This classic
play from the well-known (and studied) novel made
for compelling viewing and has given the students
lots of examples to prepare for their exams later in
the year. Following the performance, the group had

the opportunity to attend a question and answer

forum with the actors and the creative team. All of
the participants lived our school values and were so
focussed on Self-Management and on time for
meeting points that we even managed to get home a
little earlier than originally planned! More
information about the performance can be found on
the ATC website: http://www.atc.co.nz/

Spirit of Adventure
Every year our school is fortunate to be able to offer
students the opportunity to go on The Spirit of New
Zealand. This year we have been allocated two births
for males and one for a female. We like to send Year

12 students as this is the targeted age group for the

Leadership training that is given. Sarah Little and
Keagan Hayes have both had a wonderful time on
their Voyages and Sarah has written about her time
on board.

A Note from Sarah:

From the 6th to 16th I was lucky enough to earn a
scholarship through school and be on board the Spirit
of New Zealand for a 10 day voyage from Wellington
to Tauranga. When 39 other kids and I got on board
we were asked to write on the chalkboard things we
wanted to do throughout the voyage. One of the
things was to go to the Marlborough Sounds in the
South Island. Within the first few days we were in the
Marlborough Sounds swimming and setting foot on
the South Island for the first time.
What I loved about the Spirit was that anything you
wanted to do the crew would try their best to make it
happen. This trip was one of the best experience I
have ever had the chance to fulfil. I got to experience
new skills throughout the 10 days from basic sailing

Understanding the Teenage Brain

Bream Bay College is hosting an evening on Tuesday
14th June for parents/caregivers/community who
would be interested in learning about the Teenage

to improving my confidence with heights and

improving my people skills. I took away some
amazing friendships and memories. I would definitely
recommend going on board the Spirit of Adventure
Trust.

Our third allocated voyage is over the New Year and
it is for a young lady. Please contact me at the Deans
