Exhibiting Livestock Through 4-H and/ or FFA

Introduction:
A. HOOK
B. Define EXHIBITING and LIVESTOCK

History/ Background:
A. How it started:
1. In the early 1800s, it was pioneering settlers and farmers who drove their livestock
though unpaved roads in Louisville that lead to the establishment of the historic
Bourbon Stock Yards, making the city an industry leader in the meat packing
business.
B. The first North American Livestock Exposition:
1. Two years later the first North American Livestock Exposition was held November

17-23, 1974, at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center in Louisville, KY. It was
billed as a livestock expo and had a logo featuring three species beef cattle, sheep
and swine. While only beef cattle were featured this first year, of which there were
1,742 entries, this inclusion of other species signaled the planned expansion
organizers intended for the event.
C. The importance of young competitors:
1. Since its inception in 1974 the expo has recognized the importance of showcasing
todays younger competitors who are the shows future and will grow to become
tomorrows leaders in the livestock industry. Each year the expo hosts the National
College and 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging Contests. Students have the chance to show
their livestock and enter them into the Sale of Champions giving them the chance to
earn prizes in the form of scholarships and cash premiums.

Issues Related to Exhibiting Livestock:

A. Benefits of the 4-H Livestock Project
1. To me one of the greatest values of the 4-H Livestock Program is that it allows 4Hers the opportunity to gain confidence in themselves by caring for something that is
100% dependent on them.

2. The other major value I see in the 4-H Livestock Project can be said in one word
Family. When it is done right there is no better activity that promotes family time
and the opportunity for a family to work side by side on a common goal.
B. Issues
1. Not being well educated in proper animal handling.

Personal Reflection:
1. Reflect and give my opinion of each topic described above.
2. Tell my person thoughts on livestock showing.

Conclusion:
A. Restate topic and define what I have learned
B. Quickly touch on main topics above.
C. Wrap up paper.
