On the website Nigeria Flag Colors - Meaning & History of Nigeria Flag., it is said that
the Nigerian flag was designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi and was adopted on October 1st,
1960, which is Nigerias Independence Day. The flag has three equal vertical stripes - white in
the middle between two green on either side of the white band. The green symbolizes the forests
and abundant natural wealth of Nigeria, while the white represents peace and unity. Michael
Taiwo Akinkunmi was a 23-year-old student in London when he designed the national flag of
Nigeria. He entered into a competition to design the Nigerian flag and his entry won in 1959. His
design of the national flag had a red sun with streaming rays placed in the white stripe and two
green stripes on either side of the white stripe. Sadly, the judges removed the sun and then the
white and green striped flag was chosen as the national flag.
The national anthem of Nigeria begins with words that glorifies the country for its vibrant
culture and heritage, according to National Anthem of Nigeria. The songs takes the historical
past into account, as well as the country's aspirations and hopes for the future. The anthem is
very significant because it binds all Nigerians even if they live in far off lands and it serves as a
national call for all Nigerians to serve their motherland with love and compassion. The first

Nigerian national anthem was adopted in 1960 and was written by Miss Williams, a British
national. In 1978, the then National Publicity Committee of Nigeria organized a competition for
a new national song. The present day national anthem of Nigeria was composed by Nigerian
Police Band, guided by Ben Odiase. In the anthem, the blessings of the lord are prayed for in
order to guide the nation towards prosperity whilst wishing for peace in the country.
In Myabubakars BECOMING A NIGERIAN CITIZEN., he says that the main way for
foreigners to obtain Nigerian citizenship is through naturalization, which requires at least 17
years of age, resided in Nigeria for at least 15 years, is of good character, plans to remain in
Nigeria, is familiar with Nigerian language and customs, is able to support himself/herself, and
has renounced previous citizenship. Another way is through registration and this mostly applies
to women who marry a Nigerian citizen. Lastly, individuals with at least one Nigerian citizen for
a parent can also become Nigerian citizens themselves. So, if I wanted to become a citizen, I
would have to either marry a Nigerian citizen or live in Nigeria for 15 years and accommodate to
the culture and the environment while having a stable way of living.
