Gainers
Anglo American jumped a massive 18.1% over the week. The London-headquartered, South African-listed mining giant has
named Fortescue Metals Stephen Pearce as its new Finance Director. He will replace Rene Medori who is retiring in April. In
second place, Kenyas East African Breweries jumped 13.6% while Vodafone Egypt was in third position with an increase of
12.0%. The telecommunications company is facing an uncertain future in that country, rejecting the 4G licence terms offered by
the state regulator while its state-backed partner, Telecom Egypt, forges ahead with its own 4G licence.
Two South African-listed companies rounded out the list. Standard Bank and mobile service provider MTN Group gained 12.0%
and 9.6% respectively. MTN Group admitted last week that it is becoming increasingly concerned with revenue growth and
lower returns.
Losers
Barclays Bank was once again the biggest loser this week, dropping 9.0%. According to the Central Bank of Kenyas Governor
Patrick Njoroge, Kenyas decision to introduce caps on commercial-lending rates is complicating monetary policy, says
Bloomberg. Growth in private sector credit extension slowed to a rate of 7.2% in July, according to the Central Bank. Guinness
Nigeria dropped 7.0%. Last week the brewer announced N102 billion revenue for the period ended June 30, 2016, resulting in
an overall loss of N2 billion compared to the same period last year, says Premium Times.
Nigerias Guaranty Trust Bank lost 5.3% over the week while Egyptian telecoms company Mobinil (Orange) and Moroccan real
estate firm Douja Prom Addoha fared only slightly better with respective losses of 4.8% and 4.3%.
