Explanatory information on application of CE Code Rule 8-200(2) for the Load Calculation for the
Electrical Service related to Lawneway House and One-Family Dwelling; or Laneway House, Secondary
Suite and One-Family Dwelling with Secondary Suite.
Scope: Canadian Electrical Code, Bulletin and Explanatory Information:
1. The Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, 22 nd Edition, Safety Standard for Electrical Installations, CSA C22.1-2012
adopted by the Vancouver Electrical By-Law NO. 5563, Rule 8-200(2) requires that when calculating the
minimum ampacity of service or feeder conductors from a main service supplying two or more dwelling units of
row-housing shall be based on
(a) Subrule (1), excluding any electric space-heating loads and any air-conditioning loads, with application of
demand factors to the loads as required by Rule 8-202(3)(a)(i) to (v); plus
(b) the requirements of Rule 8-202(3)(b), (c), and (d).
2. The explanatory diagram of Bulletin 2000-042-EL clarifies that the consumer's service conductors between the
BC Hydro point of attachment and the duplex meter base must be sized in accordance with Rule 8-200(2) of the
CE Code and the ampacity of each consumer's service conductors between each subdivision of the duplex meter
base and the consumer's service panelboard of the Secondary Suite and One-Family Dwelling with Secondary
Suite must be based on Rule 8-200(1) of the CE Code.
3. The Figure 1 of the Diagram of "Example of Service and Distribution Arrangements for a Laneway House"
explains that the consumer's service conductors between the BC Hydro point of attachment and the duplex
meter base must be sized in accordance with Rule 8-200(2) of the CE Code and the ampacity of each
consumer's service conductors between each subdivision of the duplex meter base and the consumer's service
panelboard of the Laneway House and Main Dwelling must be based on Rule 8-200(1) of the CE Code.
Background:
1. The consumer's service conductors between the BC Hydro point of attachment and the multi-position meter
base to be sized in accordance with Rule 8-200(2) of the CE Code.
2. The main bus and each subdivision of the multi-position meter base to have the ampacities that comply with
the requirements of CEC Rule 8-200(2) & (1).
3. The ampacity of each consumer's service conductors between each subdivision of the multiple meter mounting
device and each consumer's panel service box of the Laneway House and One-Family Dwelling; or between
Laneway House, Secondary Suite and One-Family Dwelling with Secondary Suite to be based on Rule 8-200(1) of
the CE Code. (See Article 9.34.1.1. of the Vancouver Building By-law for additional requirements.)
4. Installation of LWH's service panelboard in the Laneway House to comply with CEC Rule 6-206 and Rule 26-402.
5. The Vancouver Zoning & Development Bylaw No. 3575 has the following definition and requirements:
Laneway House means a detached one-family dwelling constructed in the rear yard of a site on which is
situate a one-family dwelling or one-family dwelling with secondary suite.
Section 11, provision 11.24.17 Computation of floor area for a laneway house must include: (d) floor
area used for enclosed or covered parking.
6. The service panelboard and branch circuits from a panelboard of One-Family Dwelling or Secondary Suite or
One-Family Dwelling with Secondary Suite must not be located and connected to outlets or electrical
equipment in the detached one-family dwelling of Laneway House. (See CEC Rule 26-402(1), 26-722(a) and
Section 7.3.5.(a) of the Vancouver Electrical By-law No.5563 for additional requirements.)
7. The determination of areas for a detached one-family dwelling of Laneway House must also include the sum of
100% of the area on the ground floor that includes the inside dimensions of the area used for enclosed parking
for the purpose of CEC Rule 8-110 and Rule 8-200(2).
8. The maximum oor area of a laneway house is determined by multiplying the lot area by 0.16. This results in
maximum unit sizes of approximately 56 m 2 (644 ft2 ) on standard 33 x 122 lots, and 84 m 2 (900 ft2) on 50 x
122 lots. The maximum size of a laneway house is 900 ft 2, regardless of lot size. These floor area limits include
upper and ground floor living space as well as enclosed parking (where it is provided).
