Writing Prompt #3

With social media being all the craze in this generation, its hard to not have it be a part
of your daily life. Were constantly checking our phones, looking at emails, instagram, twitter,
facebook, tumblr, pinterest; Anything that you could possibly think of, the internet has it to keep
you entertained. Social media itself has had a great toll on our societys literacy narrative. No
matter what network youre on, youre more than likely going to see someone on your feed use
the wrong version of to or there and that alone is enough to make anybody cringe. I know
for me it does. You would think that because almost everyone you know has a smartphone that
itd be fairly easy to spell and use proper grammar, considering all smartphones have spell check.
I can say that I for one, use that on a daily basis and absolutely love how I dont have to pull out
a dictionary to figure out how to spell a word. All I do is open my notes in my phone, type out
how I think the word is spelt and spell check will correct it if its wrong. Technology has made
things like that so convenient. Ive grown up in an era where cell phones have come from nonexistent, to handheld, fingerprint scanning, touch screens in less than twenty years. Its insane to
me how fast different types of technology can go out of date or lose value, because technology is
constantly changing. Were to the point now where we have self driving cars and robots that can
play sports against you. I can remember going into what my mom and I called the computer
room, to play on Microsoft Paint on a dinosaur of a monitor. It was about twice the size of my
head and weighed almost as much as a small to medium dog, and looking back on it, I could
never imagine on how I was ever able to handle the slow internet dial up, or putting in cd games
to entertain myself. It wasnt bad, but I definitely dont see myself doing it nearly as often now.
Since technology has changed so much, I can now sit comfortably anywhere in my house, get on
the internet on my laptop, and play games, stream movies and tv shows, conduct an entire
research on dog species and the internet can give me the name of every dog in the world in a

second. I personally feel that my literacy narrative has been greatly influenced by technology, but
that doesnt mean that books and other means havent either. I still love the feel and the smell of
a good book. I still like to go out and be away from technology, every once in awhile and not feel
the need to check my social media networks every hour to keep myself entertained. I still love to
read and play music from a spreadsheet and listening to the sounds that come from an instrument
without having to hear it through headphones. Technology has definitely impacted our lives and
our literacy narratives as a whole, but its not wise or enjoyable to depend on it constantly.
