Introduction
The Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file type is the de facto standard for document interchange.
PDF documents can be created from any electronic document as well as from scanned images from paper.
PDF files can be displayed and printed from most platforms and maintain document fidelity between
platforms. Many organizations use PDF files for archiving and to enable collaboration and automate
document workflows thought the document lifecycle. This often requires augmenting the PDF with additional
annotations such as Watermarks, Header/Footer information as well as the ability to merging multiple
documents of different types into a single PDF document. In addition, merged PDF files may require a full
Table of Contents, with Hyperlinks, for each document as well as a full set of Bookmarks to provide effective
navigation throughout the compound document. Express Server is a high performance application that
automates the conversion of your business content to PDF, Plain (ASCII) Text and Image files. Express
Server converts an extensive list of file types including standard business documents, images, graphics, web
and legacy files to retain the look and feel of the original document for archiving, exchanging between other
companies, printing or viewing. XML Job Tickets are designed to provide complete control of the PDF
conversion process using Express Server. Automated document processing is easily implemented using XML
Job Tickets.
The information contained within this document requires an understanding of both the Express Server product
as well as some basic knowledge of XML.

DTD Installation
Upon installation, the DTD is installed in the DTD folder found in the Express Server installation directory (e.g.
C:\Program Files\Adlib\Express\DTD). Any existing DTDs located in this installation directory will be copied to
a backup folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Adlib\Express\DTD\Backup).
When Express Server is first run, a DTD folder will be created within the root folder as specified during
installation (e.g. C:\Adlib Express\DTD) and the new DTD will be copied to this location. If a DTD is currently
found within this directory, no action will be taken (an existing AdlibExpress.DTD will NOT be overwritten).
Also, if the DTD folder is deleted after Express Server has been executed for the first time, it will not be
created a second time.
In order to turn off font embedding, Multilanguage must also be turned off as well. If Multilanguage is not
turned off, it will override the users font embedding setting to Enabled.
The difference between content bookmarks and document bookmarks is that document bookmarks will only
create a bookmark consisting of the file name(s) of the file(s) being converted.
All elements included within the XML Job Ticket will inherit default values not overridden by the user from the
DTD. Not every element has to be included in order for the XML Job Ticket to validate. Simply choosing what
is required will suffice. Most defaults have their ENABLED values equal to Yes which would cause that
element to be applied to the conversion.
Folder paths are absolute, variables and line feeds can be used,
e.g. "&[Path]\&[File]<CR>&[PageID]".
Additional information about Job Tickets, along with sample files and sample XML Job Tickets, can be
requested by sending an email to info@adlibsoftware.com.

XML Job Ticket files may be placed in the Express Server Input folder but the files referenced within
the XML Job Ticket may be located anywhere on the network. This allows files to be processed
without having to physically move the files to the input folder.
The XML Job Ticket functionality is very flexible and can be used in many ways. For example, it can be used
to add a cover page to each PDF created.
Tip:
Locate the cover page file outside of the Input folder and reference it using an Absolute path in the
XML Job Ticket file.
A second example is to use XML Job Ticket files to assemble multiple documents into a single PDF file. This
file can then be emailed as a single attachment.
A third example is to use XML Job Ticket files to merge structured data (e.g. data from a database) with other
documents.
Tip:
Write a program or script to extract the structured data and create a file (e.g. HTML, JPG, TXT,)
which is then merged with the other documents.
When processing XML Job Ticket files, the Input File Handling selection only applies to the files in the Input
folder and its subfolders. All files located outside the Input Folder are processed and left in the same location.
Tip:
The XML Job Ticket file should be created/copied after all files referenced within the XML Job Ticket
file have been copied. This eliminates the possibility of processing a referenced file that has not been
copied which results in a File Not Found error.

Insert (INSERT)
(Requires ExpressPublishing Server)
An Insert allows you to define different types of insert pages and/or printer commands at a specific location
into the output PDF. An Insert Page is defined as a Tab or Slipsheet that is to be inserted into a specified
location in the output PDF.
An Insert may consist the following:
Insert Page with Printer Command
Insert Page with no Printer Command
Printer Command
The Insert element defines where the Insert is to be located in the output PDF. The Insert Element refers to
an Insert Style which defines the properties of the Insert, using the INSERTSTYLENAME attribute. The
INSERTSTYLE refers to a DOCREFERENCE using the DOCREFERENCENAME attribute. The
DOCREFERENCE defines the properties of the Page that is to be inserted. The Insert element also refers to
a PRINTERCOMMAND using the PRINTERCOMMANDNAME attribute.

Bookmarks (BOOKMARKS)
The Bookmarks element allows users to create bookmarks or to define their own custom bookmarks. The
CREATEDOCUMENTBOOKMARKS adds a bookmark in the PDF for each file specified in the XML job ticket.
By default, the filenames referenced in the XML Job Ticket file are used as the Bookmark name. The
Bookmark destination is set to the first page of the document.
The EXPANDEDBOOKMARKLEVELMODE setting specifies how bookmarks are to appear in the PDF when
it is first opened. The EXPANDEDBOOKMARKLEVELMODE setting may be defined as All, Defined or None.
The setting All will set all Bookmarks to be expanded. Defined enables the Level setting that will open all
bookmarks to that value. None sets all Bookmarks to be closed.
The CONTENTBOOKMARKS automatically creates Bookmarks in the PDF for Microsoft Word and Excel. All
styles defined in Microsoft Word can be bookmarked in the PDF. All heading (headings 1 to 9) styles are
automatically bookmarked by default.
Each tab contained in a Microsoft Excel Worksheet is automatically bookmarked in the PDF.
This Bookmark feature is supported for the following native applications:
Microsoft Office 2010 (Word, Excel)
Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel)
Microsoft Office 2003 (Word, Excel)
Tip:
The associated Native Application must be installed and the Convert Using Native Applications
Support must be selected in Express Server for the Bookmarks to be added to the PDF.

Condense (CONDENSE)
The Condense element allows users to define how to reduce the number of pages within a single document
by eliminating as much whitespace as possible. This is done by combining any two or more consecutive
pages onto a single page if the content of each individual page can be combined without scaling to fit onto a
single page. The net effect will be the elimination of one page of document length for every two pages that
can be combined.

Headers/Footers (HEADERS/FOOTERS)
XML Job Tickets may be used to add branding information in the form of headers and footers to documents
being processed (see Table 48 Header/Footer ).
Header and footer text can be applied in the Left, Center and Right justification of each PDF page. Multiple
line headers and footers are defined by inserting a <CR> string into the text string. These characters will be
automatically removed and replaced with a carriage return line feed (CRLF) when the document is processed.
Multiple header or multiple footer elements can be added to the XML Job Ticket allowing for a variety of
headers or footers as desired. Contained in the HEADERS or FOOTERS element is as many HEADER or
FOOTER elements as needed, however to turn off the entire collection, the HEADERS or FOOTERS element
must have its ENABLED attribute defined as No (see Headers/Footers (HEADERS/FOOTERS)).
The following annotations may be included in the Header and Footer Text.
Page Number - &[Page]
Total Number of Pages - &[Pages]
Date - &[Date]
Time - &[Time]
Document Path - &[Path]
Document File Name - &[File]
Page ID - &[PageID]
Full Path - &[FullPath]

Note, these annotations are evaluated and automatically replaced by the appropriate value when the
document is processed. Also, the [PageID] is an annotation for Page Identification (refer to

Hyperlinks (HYPERLINKS)
Hyperlinks can be preserved from the original document(s) or you can create additional hyperlinks within the
newly created PDF. In addition, the Native Application (see below) must reside on the computer and is used
to render the document. Hyperlinks are also preserved for Table of Contents, List of Figures, and List of
Tables as well as for references contained in the documents. The CREATECONTENTHYPERLINKS feature
is supported for the following Native Applications:
Microsoft Office 2010 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Microsoft Office 2003 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Microsoft Internet Explorer (6.0, 7.0)
Microsoft Visio (2002)
Corel (WordPerfect Version 9.0 to X3)
Tip:
The MS Word Allow A4/Letter paper resizing check box must be disabled in order for the
Hyperlinks to be located at the correct location on the page. The Allow A4/Letter paper resizing
setting is located under Tools -> Options -> Print tab.
Tip:
Preserving the Hyperlinks in the PDF increases the document processing time.
Tip:
Hyperlink remapping when splitting or merging is a part of the ExpressPublishing Server, please
contact sales (Appendix I Contact Adlib) if you wish to purchase the ExpressPublishing Server.
Tip:
Content Hyperlinks will not be created if a DOCINPUT is an HTML file and URIDOWNLOAD=No has

Defining multiple OCRLANGUAGE elements increases the recognizable character set that is used to
recognize image text. Noise around the image text could cause recognition errors, for example:
An e character with some noise over the top of the character could be recognized as an e
with an accent grave over it, as such: .
Note:
Enabling the despeckle option could cause serious recognition errors with characters implementing
these character marks (i.e. accent grave, accent aigu, accent circumflex, etc).
Note:
Enabling English and French recognition character sets, for example, could cause the Nuance engine
to favor the English recognition character set over the French recognition character set. It is best to
always target the languages that only exist in the document and do not define unnecessary
recognition character sets (i.e. if the document is in French, only enable the French character setdo
not enable the English character set as well).
Documents that contain multiple languages are very error prone in terms of recognition
accuracy.

Overlays (OVERLAYS)
This element allows users to apply overlays to one or more pages of the documents that are converted (see
Figure 19 Overlay). Multiple OVERLAY elements can be added allowing for a variety of overlays.
Contained in the OVERLAYS element is as many OVERLAY elements as needed, however to turn off the
entire collection, the OVERLAYS element must have ENABLED=No.

1- The units are inches for the Imperial measurement system and centimeters for the Metric measurement
system set in the Regional Settings of the computer where Express Server is installed.
2- When rendering HTML documents for an Overlay, ensure that the Header and Footer fields (located in
the Headers and Footers frame) are blanked out in the Page Setup window of Internet Explorer. The
Page Setup window is easily accessed from Internet Explorer by clicking File Page Setup
3- Regarding the MATCHPAGESIZE attribute, if absolute positioning is used in the body of HTML
documents, the content will not scale to the rendered PDF page size. Please use percentages instead of
specific width / height units.
4- Regarding MATCHPAGESIZE attribute, it is recommended that HTML documents to be used for this
feature are not created with Word or other Office products since these products have a tendency to insert
comments that are programmatic instructions to the rendering application and may interfere with the
replacement macro interpretation. In addition, if the rendering application is not Internet Explorer, then
the MATCHPAGESIZE attribute will not function accordingly. The workaround is to delete all references
to the Microsoft Office product used to create the HTML document. This includes namespaces and
metadata elements found in the body of the HTML. This will help to ensure that the HTML document is
rendered using Internet Explorer.
5- Missing Background Colors and Images in the resulting overlay.
If background colors and images are to be retained in the overlay document then the following option
must be enabled in Internet Explorer:
To enable background colors and images while printing with Internet Explorer:
1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
2. Click the Advanced tab and scroll down to the Printing option in the Settings window.
3. Check the Print background colors and images check box.
6- HTML documents with dynamic content do not render properly.
HTML documents that have dynamic content must be allowed to render. Security settings in Internet
Explorer are set too high causing these documents either to be rendered with missing content or not at all
since they cannot be loaded correctly. Reduce the security settings in Internet Explorer to resolve this
issue.
7- Regarding HTML page encoding.
Ensure that the page encoding is set to "Auto-Select" in Internet Explorer. Otherwise, the font
appearance may be different than what has been specified in the source of the HTML document.
8- When rendering HTML documents for an Overlay, ensure that website font and color settings are not
overridden.
It is recommended that the user does not force certain fonts and colors to be used in Internet Explorer for
all websites. To ensure this is not the case, follow these steps:
1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, click Accessibility.
3. Uncheck the following options:
Ignore colors specified on web pages
Ignore font styles specified on web pages
Ignore font sizes specified on web pages check boxes
4. Click OK.

Description
Attempts to preserve the flow of the original content by
removing line breaks within paragraphs. This results in
better formatting when viewing and printing certain
document types (e.g. simple paragraph-based content)
since the content can dynamically re-flow to fit the
available screen/paper size.
Attempts to position all content explicitly using line breaks
and indentation to match the layout of the original
content. This results in better formatting for document
types that contain mixed content and complex formatting
(e.g. images, columns, tables, etc), but will not re-flow to
fit different screen/paper sizes.

Transformations (TRANSFORMATION)
The Transformations element allows the user to modify the alignment of the PDF, scale the PDF or scale its
contents. Within the Transformations element, the user can specify the alignment of the document when
transforming. The PDF uses this point as a focal point when applying the various transformations (see Figure

Watermarks (WATERMARKS)
Watermarks may be added to document files by defining the watermark text and defining the settings for its
appearance. The Watermark Text can be inserted on the Foreground or Background Layer of the document.
The Watermark can be applied to specific pages of the document. This is often used when it is important for
the Watermark not to cover any of the document information. To help with this, the Watermark can be
centered automatically or using absolute coordinates if needed. This allows the user to specify where they
want the watermark to appear so that it does not interfere with any of significant portions of the document.
Multiple watermark elements can be added to the XML Job Ticket allowing for a variety of watermarks as
desired. Contained in the WATERMARKS element is as many WATERMARK elements as needed, however
to turn off the entire collection, the WATERMARKS element must have ENABLED=No. Please refer to the
tables below for details (see Figure 33 Watermark).

Moved DESTINATIONS element and all its attributes to the DOCOUTPUT element.
Added optional attribute NUMBEROFCOPIES to the DESTPRINTER element to determine how many
copies are to be printed.
Added optional attribute URI to the DESTURI element to determine the location of the URI, it contains the
full path and takes precedent over the host/protocol option.
Changed the following attributes in the DESTEMAILS element
Changed attribute SMTPSERVER to: SERVERNAME
Changed attribute SMTPPORT to: SERVERPORT
Changed attribute SMTPUSERNAME to: USERNAME
Changed attribute SMTPPASSWORD to: PASSWORD
Added new attributes to the LOGSETTINGS element
Added attribute DOCUMENTLOGENABLED, Yes by default, can be disabled with No
Added attribute DOCUMENTLOGRETAINHISTORY, No by default, can be enabled with Yes,
retains the document log
Note: Contact Adlib for Version History prior to Express Server 3.0.0.
Please select Only Process DPI/XML Job Tickets option from the Input Settings form (Express Options > General tab)
Your version of Express Server has not been licensed. Please make sure you have licensed Express
Server with a proper Activation ID. To purchase a license, please see Sales in the contact section
(Appendix I Contact Adlib).
Please select Start Monitoring from the main screen and ensure that Express Server is configured so that
it is monitoring the folder in which the XML Job Ticket resides.
The XML Job Ticket has completed processing but the Output is not located in the Output folder.
Check the path(s) defined in the XML Job Tickets DOCOUTPUT FOLDER attribute this is where the
documents will be created when successfully processed.
Note: The Output folder as defined in the User Interface does NOT apply for Output files when
processing with XML Job Tickets.
The XML Job Ticket may fail validation due to syntax errors within the XML file.
XML Job Ticket that fail to process will be place in the defined Error folder with line and position
references to where the XML Job Ticket failed validation (refer to the Adlib Express Process Log for
this information).
Make sure that the encoding defined in the XML Job Ticket (e.g. UTF-16) matches the file encoding
(e.g. Unicode).
Tip: If using the Internet Explorer tool, a message box will pop up with the line and position
references if the file does not validate.
Why was the XML Job Ticket moved to the Error folder?
Refer to the Adlib Express Process log, the XML Job Ticket may have failed validation or failed while
processing the Job.
If it was a Job processing error, check the error logs to see which type of error (such as File Not
Found or Access Denied). Contact Technical Support (Appendix I Contact Adlib) if a
successful solution has not been found.
