What can be made out of clay?
Content
Factual Content:
One way bells can be made from clay is by making a pinch pot and attaching a
small sculpture for a handle. The softness and malleability of clay can be
manipulated by adding small amounts of water; too much water will cause
first a slime affect, and later cracking. Scoring and slipping is a technique to
attach clay to itself which involves making a similar effect to crosshatching
with the needle to both points of attachment, adding slip as glue and
smearing the surfaces together. A smeared coil around the point of
attachment will provide extra support. Past the leather hard stage (when there
is still a bit of moisture but it cannot be reformed) this method will not work.
Vocabulary:
Tier 1: Bell, sculpture, clay
Tier 2:
Pinch pots, coils, smear, needle tool
Tier 3:
Scoring, slip, leather hard, bone dry
Critical Thinking Skills (Reading, Writing, Speech, Listening)
Students will construct a pinch pot for the base of their bell, ensuring to
produce an even thickness to ensure a successful firing.
Sculpt a pokemon of their choice using different techniques to acquire desired
appearance
Demonstrate their understanding of attachment to adhere their sculpture to
their bell base.

Assessments (Performance Tasks/Tests/Quizzes Formative/Summative,

Informal/Formal)
Was the student able to produce a bell body that was even in thickness all
around.
Did the student produce a pokemon that was smaller than 3 inches? Did the
student attach it to the bell base effectively?
