Course Description: Each student will participate in weekly applied


lessons, studio classes, and trombone choir rehearsals. Hour lessons are 4
credits and half hour lessons are 2 credits.

Co-Requisites: MUS 010 (Studio class) and MUS 011 (Brass class)
Learning Outcomes:
Students will continually work on the following skills on their applied
instrument.
-Develop a high level of characteristic tone and technique on the
trombone.
-Develop long and short-term goals for each semester.
-Develop knowledge about trombone repertoire of different styles.
-Develop musicianship in phrasing and evaluating their performances.

Required texts:
-Arban- Complete Method
-Bordougni- Book 1: Vocalises for trombone
-Blazehevich- Clef Studies
-Tyrell- 40 Etudes
-Edwards- Lip Slurs
-Solos: Will be assigned each semester

Required Materials:
- Professional Grade Instrument and Mouthpiece (Bach, Yamaha,
Edwards, Shires)
- Recording Device (Phones will work)
- Metronome/ Tuner (Korg, boss, snark.) (Phones will work but can be
distracting)
- Note book: write down weekly assignments
- Any mute needed (Straight mute and cup mute occur most often)
- Trombone maintenance (Slide oil, cleaning supplies, tuning slide
grease)
- Materials for weekly lesson: solos, etudes, excerpts.

Attendance Requirements:
Lesson attendance is mandatory! If there is a reason you are unable to make
your lesson please let me know 24 hours in advance. I will do my best to
work with you to reschedule the lesson. If you do not let me know 24 hours
in advance there will be no make up lesson. Please be on time to lessons, if
you show up late your grade for that lesson will be affected.

3. Weekly Studio class: You will have the opportunity to perform for your
peers and provide constructive criticism.
4. Overdub Project: Due at the last week of the semester. Hone your
intonation with recording yourself playing each part. Goodluck!
5. Jury: Final performance of the semester to show everyone the progress
you have made through the semester.

Assessment:

Lessons: A weekly grade will be assigned to each lesson. Lessons


will be based on students effort and progress made on assignments
based on ability. Not outcomes.

o Lesson Grade of an A: Student has music prepared. Can


perform the material technically well and has thorough
understanding about artistic interpretation.
o Lesson Grade of B: Student has music prepared. Can
perform material with some technical issues and has
thought about some artistic interpretation.
o Lesson Grade of C: Student has not prepared the
material. Struggling to play without hesitation, notes and
rhythms are missed. Little to no artistic expression in
playing.
o Lesson Grade of D: Student has not prepared the
material. Little to no improvement from last lesson on
material that is previously assigned. Playing lacks
accuracy in rhythms and notes.
o Lesson Grade of F: Did not show up for lesson. Fail to
bring assigned material.
Studio Class: Will be held once a week and is mandatory attendance.
In the semester you are required to play once in the class. The class
will be held in room 220.
Jury: The jury will take place at the end of the semester during finals
week. Jury performances will include a solo work performed with
piano. There will also be sight reading on the jury.
Over Dub Project: At the end of the semester you are required to
turn in an overdub of a song of your choice. For example you can
choose a famous pop song or simple tune. The project must include
an arrangement of the song for 3 trombones. The project also must
have a recording of you playing each part. You can use audacity to
record each part.

University Policy: "Students whose names who do not appear on the

class list will not be permitted to participate (take exams or receive credit)
without first showing proof of registration by no later than Sept. 12

Withdrawal Policy: The last day to add or drop a class is Sept. 12th and
the last day to withdraw (WD) from a class is Oct. 17th.

Plagiarism: Under University Rule 3359-41-02, plagiarism constitutes a

type of student misconduct that is punishable by formal disciplinary


probation, suspension, or dismissal from the University. It is the responsibility
