Introduction
To successfully complete this installation you will need approximately 72 GB of free
space on your hard drive. In addition you require an absolute minimum of 1 GB of
RAM.
You need to be running Windows XP, VISTA, 7, 8, 8.1 or Windows 10
Both 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows are fully compatible with this software.
When plugging your interface cable into your laptop always use a port on the right
hand side of the laptop as you look at it. This is especially important in USB 3.0
equipped laptops.
This installation manual has been compiled using screenshots from a Windows XP
32 bit installation. There are no major differences between versions. Any minor
differences I will expand upon in the text where necessary.

Which USB lead do I require?

If you are connecting to any of the models detailed in the table below then you will
require a USB DCAN type interface to do this.
BMW 1 Series E81 / E82 / E87 / E88 Manufactured after March 2007
BMW 3 Series E90 / E91 / E92 / E93 Manufactured after March 2007
BMW 5 series E60 / E61 Manufactured after March 2007
BMW 6 series E63 / E64 Manufactured after March 2007
BMW 7 Series E65 / E66 / E67 / E68 Manufactured after March 2007
BMW X3 Manufactured after September 2006
BMW X5 E70 (New Model)
BMW X6 E71 / E72
BMW Z4 E85 / E86 manufactured after March 2007
Mini R55 / R56

This is the silver coloured interface similar to the below:

Copyright 2016 BMW Diagnostics

Page 4/81

For all older models you require the USB EDIABAS type interface similar to below:

Both of these leads connect to the OBD2 connector located in the drivers side foot
well under the dashboard.

Copyright 2016 BMW Diagnostics

Page 5/81

In addition if you have the 20 pin round connector located under the bonnet next to
the suspension strut then you will also require a 20-16 pin adapter similar to the
following:

Vehicles manufactured prior to the year 2000 generally have the 20 pin round
connector. If you have the 20 pin round connector and also the oblong OBD2
connector under the dashboard you should always connect via the 20 pin round
connector as this gives you full access to all modules on your vehicle.
The leads detailed are the only types of leads that will work with this software. A
normal OBDII adapter, ELM 327 cable or any other cable will not work. It has to be a
USB EDIABAS or DCAN type interface and it must be plugged into a USB 2.0 / 3.0
port.
These leads are not backwards compatible. I.e. the DCAN lead will not work with
models manufactured prior to March 2007 and the blue lead will not work with
models manufactured after March 2007.
A single one lead fixes all does not exist at the time of writing.
Only leads purchased from BMW Diagnostics can be guaranteed to work with my
software and your vehicle.
If you require any advice with regards to lead compatibility then please contact me
through eBay and I will be glad to assist with your particular case.

Connect the EDIABAS / DCAN interface to an available USB 2.0 / 3.0 port.

Ensure that you use the same laptop USB 2.0 / 3.0 socket every time you
reconnect the interface lead in future. This will ensure that the correct
configuration of the port is maintained.

We now need to install the correct drivers and check that the port we are
using is configured to COM1. Go to the control panel (on opening you may
need to set it for viewing by small icons) and double click on the system
icon. Click on the hardware tab if there is one, and select Device Manager.

Connecting with SSS V32

The first thing we need to do is disable all firewalls which are active on your
laptop as these disrupt the connection between the EDIABAS interface and
SSS. This also applies to any Windows firewalls.

The version of SSS V32 supplied on the discs is suitable for BMW E3x, E4x &
E5x models. If you require a version of SSS V32 that is suitable for BMW
models E6x, E7x, E8x, and E9x or for the Mini then please refer to Appendix
C for details of how to download and install a different version of SSS V32.
Once you have the correct version in place please continue with the
connecting process.

Open the INPA / EDIABAS Virtual machine as per previous instructions.

Connect your USB interface cable to the diagnostic port in your vehicle and to

Appendix B: Safety Precautions and warnings

To prevent personal injury or damage to vehicles or equipment please observe the
following safety precautions:

Connecting or disconnecting test equipment when the ignition is on or the

engine is running can cause damage to the vehicle. Please ensure the
ignition is switched off and that no live session is established between the
DIS / SSS software and the vehicle prior to disconnecting. You can check
this by ensuring that you are at the front screen of INPA or DIS/SSS (i.e.
the car picture) before disconnecting.

To maintain a constant steady voltage whilst programming / encoding it is

recommended that a good quality battery charger is connected that can
provide a minimum charge of 30Ah.

When an engine is running, it produces carbon monoxide, a toxic and

poisonous gas. To prevent serious injury or death from carbon monoxide
poisoning, operate the vehicle only in a well-ventilated area.

To protect your eyes from propelled objects as well as hot or caustic fluids,
always wear approved safety eye protection.

Keep cigarettes, sparks, open flames and other sources of ignition away
from the vehicle being tested. Keep a dry chemical (Class B) fire
extinguisher rated for gasoline, chemical and electrical fires in the work
area.

To prevent damage to the vehicle when taking electrical measurements,

always use a digital multi-meter with at least 10M of impedance.

Keep the tools clean, dry and free from oil, water and grease. Use only a
mild detergent on a clean cloth to clean the outside of the OBD interface
when necessary.

BMW Diagnostics cannot be held responsible for any damage to a vehicle,

laptop or interface, or for any personal injury.
