1.3 Anticipatory Set

parent/grandparent about a communication device (TV, phone, radio or internet) when they were
growing up and how it has changed throughout their lives.
Students will share some of the interesting things they learned from their interviews.
1.4 Procedures
Students will take out the notes they took during their interview with their parent or
grandparent. Questions that they were to asked include:
o Pick phone, TV, radio or internet.
o When were you born?
o How did this communication device play a role in your life and/or your familys
life?
o What were advantages of it?
o What were disadvantages of it?
o How has the communication device changed from then to now?
Teacher will put an outline on the smartboard for the students to follow when writing up
their reports. (Appendix 1)
Using the information that the students gathered, they will use the outline to construct a
rough draft of their report.
When they have completed their rough draft they will read through it and edit it
themselves with a colored pencil.
Once they have edited the paper themselves, they will find a partner to edit with a
different colored pencil.
Once a partner has edited and given the paper back to the student, the teacher will quickly
review edits and make any added changes and have a short conference with each student.
After editing by the teacher and the conference, students may begin working on writing a
final draft.

1.5 Differentiation
Advanced students may add a paragraph to their paper about how their life would be
impacted if this invention did not exist.
Students who are struggling with writing may type their report.
Students may be given a graphic organizer to conduct their interview so that their
information is organized when they are ready to begin writing the report.
Visual learners may benefit from adding visuals into their reports such as a picture to go
along with their writing.
Auditory learners will benefit from listening to students share their reports in groups and
conducting a verbal interview.
1.6 Closure
20 minutes before the end of the period, the teacher will stop the students where they are.
Students will be put in small groups based on what invention they chose so that each group hears
a report about each invention. Students will share the work that they have completed, whether
they have finished writing their whole report or not. While classmates are sharing, students who
are listening will write down something they found interesting or a question they have about that
students report. (Appendix 2)
1.7 Formative and Summative Assessment

about their writing. When students are sharing, teacher will walk around to listen.
