EDI 337-04
PTA
Unit: Waves
Grade Level: 6-8
Purpose: This summative task for learning was developed to assess the students
ability of comprehending waves and their applications on technologies for information
transfer. This assessment will help students prepare to develop, use, and revise models
to describe, test, and predict more abstract phenomena and design systems. The
student and teacher will be able to meet individually to discuss his/her progress and
where they are headed.
Standards/Benchmarks:
MS-PS4-2. Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or
transmitted through various materials.
ELA/Literacy - SL.8.5 Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations to
clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest.
Learning Goals:
Learning Goals

Where it is being addressed

Performance/Reasoning

I can develop a model to

describe how when light shines
on an object, it is reflected,
absorbed, or transmitted through
the object, depending on the
objects material and the
frequency (color) of the light.

Task 1

Performance- based assessment

I can present a model using

multimedia or visual displays
while focusing on eye contact
and voice.

Task 2

Performance-based assessment

Directions:
In class, we have been discussing waves and how they are reflected, absorbed, or
transmitted through various materials.
Using your understanding of the properties of waves, you will create a model that the
displays how light can be reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials.
Your performance on your model will be evaluated in terms of how it can accurately
displays reflection, absorption, and transmission.
After the creation of your model you will be asked to present your findings in your
model. Your performance on your presentation will be evaluated in terms of use of
multimedia, eye contact, and voice.
Schedule
Day

Task

Students will research and develop their models. Before construction of their models,
students will create a plan that they will draw in order to organize their thoughts and revise
their material list.

Students will continue construction on their model. Teacher will discuss with students their
model individually, providing encouragement and suggestions for improvement.
Finalizations will be made.

Students will work on the development of their presentations.

Reminders:
Please write your name on your model. You will have 2 class periods to complete your
model and 1 class period to prepare for your presentation. If you have a question,
please raise your hand and I will come to you. When you are finished with your
model and preparation for your presentation, please complete the self-reflection
below. Write your answers in the space provided under the questions. When finished,
turn in your reflection on my desk and return to your desk where you may work on
other homework or quietly read to yourself.
Good luck! I know you will do great!

Self-reflection:

1. How did creating your model help you understand how waves work?

2. If any, what would you have done differently?

3. What was the most important thing you learned from your presentation?
