What is Health?

Intro to Health
Dr. Mead

When it comes to health, it is more than just being up to date with

medicine or doing your regular check-ups with a family or any doctor one
may see (even though widely encouraged). But health to me is having a wellbalanced alignment with four categories within physical, emotional, mental,
and even social health due to the fact that we are very complex in design.
The one philosophy that I feel best helps my point would be the
Freeing/Functioning philosophy, which is when people make the best health
decisions based on their needs and interests. It goes hand in hand with
health education, when people know more about their body, mind and state
of well-being they tend to do a better job due to the fact of knowing and
being taught.
Physical health, emotional health, mental, and even social health,
these are very strong factors that can be over looked but have a tremendous
amount of influence on our bodies. Each one has its own toll and uplifts
towards the body, and if not recognized then one may hold a heavy burden
to the body. The goal of health education is to bring a positive perspective for
people and their health, to be able to look ones best, being able to perform
at the best of ones abilities, feeling good and positive about ones self and
being able to maintain that status of health is what I believe health
education is.
Physical health is the most common form of health that the vast of
society considers health. But the reason for it being so common is due to the
fact that it is the most visible of all the health dimensions, when someone
has fallen ill, or if someone looks to if they are having a hard time sleeping or

even if a person was to fall and scrap a knee and or arm, the reason why we
know something is wrong is due to the visibility of physical health. Many in
die field emphasize that physical education is more than physical activity, is
an academic discipline, and should include motor learning, sport skills, social
development, and other worthy outcomes (Sallis, 2012). Things that relate
to maintaining a great and positive physical health comes from what is
commonly known as physical fitness. Now the importance of this physical
fitness cannot be stressed enough due to the fact that in todays society we
as civilizations are making steps towards a more sedentary lifestyle and or
a place where there is not much movement, like a seated position may also
be known as a couch potato. Physical fitness has long been associated
fewer visits to the doctors offices, hospitalization in most cases, and even
fewer medications and or prescriptions. If individuals do not understand the
importance of maintaining a healthy weight balance or being physically fit
and/or do not have adequate knowledge on how to apply this knowledge to
their daily lives, it may affect their motivation to be physically active and
their PA choices (Ferkel, 2014).
Although emotional health and mental health are closely and go hand
in hand with one another, they are quite different in detail of what they can
affect and cause. So when it comes to emotional health, it is about being
happy, being self-confident, self-aware, and resilient. Those who are
emotionally healthy are able to cope and or deal with life's greatest
challenges and recover from major to minor setbacks. A person who lost

their job may go through hard times trying to make ends meet or a teenager
moving in the middle of sophomore year in high school may go through a
time of depression in which resulted from being uprooted from her previous
residents.
Following that mental health is the ability to stay focused with
sustained, with either divided or selective attention. Also having the
capability to process information, with the ability to understand what we
hear and see, along with the function of thoughtful and logical processing
and reasoning skills. Knowing when to express ones thoughts, and being
able to understand the circumstance that one may be in is what most do not
know is a sign of a healthy mind. When someone has been confronted about
a certain situation, being able to access, and process the outcome and
finding the most suitable way to handle that situation is where mental health
can play. Also as stated before mental health goes hand in hand with
emotional health, they both occupy your mind space so one without the
other is not really likely.
