Bocco, Diana. "Lupus and RA: Telling Two Diseases Apart." Healthline. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 Dec.
2016.
http://www.healthline.com/health-slideshow/lupus-and-ra#1
In this article, Diana Bocco breaks down the everlasting question of the differences
between arthritis and lupus disabilities. After the examination of over 10 articles and websites,
Bocco describes the various symptoms that verify the different characteristics between lupus and
arthritis. Diana Bocco reveals that the two disabilities are very similar, in fact, the two
disabilities are so similar that a person may be diagnosed with lupus when they really have
arthritis or vise versa. Although the disabilities are very similar, there are differences between the
two. Arthritis causes joint damage while lupus does not cause joint damage. I have been asked so
many times, What is the difference between arthritis and lupus? that I have lost count. I will be
able to inform others with evidence that there are differences between the two. I will record the
differences of what happens to a person with arthritis versus what happens to a person with lupus

when they are in a flare. This article provides me with very worthy information to where I am
able to use it all in my capstone project. Overall, I am able to create more awareness for these
unmistakably different disabilities.
Gee, Courtney. "Ignorance and Lupus: A Rant." Donkey Brains. WordPress. 23 Feb. 2014. Web.
01 Dec. 2016.
http://donkeybrainspoker.com/2014/02/24/ignorance-and-lupus-a-rant-2/
In this article, Gee reveals how a person with an invisible disease is discriminated against
because she does not look sick or handicapped. The author provides an example of how disabled
people are discriminated against with her own personal experience with a civilian that she did
not know, nor did the civilian know her. Courtney Gee, like many others, is diagnosed with lupus
and has trouble walking most of the time, so she obtained a handicap placard for her car. A
woman that saw her park in handicap discriminated against Gee because she looks perfectly
healthy. This article enhances my project by informing people that just because someone looks
healthy does not mean they are healthy. This article brings the idea to mind, to ask people if they
think others can be sick even though they look healthy. I would like to see the response by doing
random sampling. This whole article is useable because it describes how the disabled is affected
by someone elses actions because of discrimination and overall that there is discrimination
against people who have invisible disabilities.

In this article, Christine Miserandino reveals a way to explain lupus, or any chronic
disability, to someone who does not understand what a chronically disabled person deals with on
a day to day basis. The author uses her own personal experience when she was with her best
friend, who was questioning what it felt like to live life with a chronic disease. Miserandino
thought that her best friend knew everything there was to know about lupus considering it was
her best friend. She came up with a new way to describe to her friend what her life was like,
which was by using spoons which represented Miserandinos energy and how her spoons
(energy) drained faster than a person who does not have a disability. This article enhances my
project because I can explain my disability to people in a way that helps them understand my
struggles. Sharing this story with others, especially others who have disabilities brings forward
the idea of more awareness for chronic diseases. I am able to use this whole article because it
explains in great detail what it is like to live with a chronic disability.
"The Impact of Disability on a Family." NHSN National Home Sharing Short Breaks Network.
NHSN, 13 Aug. 2015. Web. 02 Dec. 2016.
http://nhsn.ie/information/information-for-host-families/the-impact-of-disability-on-afamily/
In this article, NHSN clarifies that the family members of someone with a disability are
just as affected as the disabled person is. NHSN has revealed that having someone in the family
with a disability is a unique experience that affects all family members by the way they live and
function as a family. This article demonstrates how families are affected by a disability in the
family such as, having additional children, decisions about work, having guilt or blaming

yourself for someone having to deal with a disability, etc. NHSN uses evidence from real
families that deal with this everyday by using quotes from family members. This article can
enhance my project because I can use it as a resource to explain that this is true and not only
affects the disabled. I had the idea of interviewing my mom, dad, brother, and friends to see how
my disability has affected them. This whole article is useable because I can ask others specific
questions from the examples given in the article to see how those specific examples have
affected them.
"Who Gets Lupus." Who Gets Lupus | S.L.E. Lupus Foundation. Lupus Research Alliance, n.d.
Web. 01 Dec. 2016.
http://www.lupusny.org/about-lupus/who-gets-lupus
In this article, the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation throws light upon the fact that
some people are more prone to getting lupus than others and genetics may play a
role in the probability of getting lupus. The foundation has done surveys and have
revealed that 15-44 year old African American, Latina, and Native American women
are most likely to get lupus while only about 5,000 - 10,000 children develop lupus.
The article provides evidence and statistics for the likelihood of developing lupus
based on gender, age, race, and the possibility of genetics. The Lupus Foundation
has come to the conclusion that lupus is more of a womens disease based on the
statistics revealed over the years since the foundation has been around. This
articles can enhance my project because it reveals how likely one is to get the
disease and it shows that there has been research done within the world to obtain
this information. This sparks an idea towards my final product for my project to

show that I have done research on this topic and I am knowledgeable and am
consistent with the information I give.
