LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED

Resource #1: Alberta Elementary Phys. Ed. Curriculum

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

Basketballs (30)
Pylons (5 rows)

PROCEDURE
Introduction (5 min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber:
Do: Warm up- Students do 5 laps around the gym and sit quietly in the center circle of the gym.
Do: While students are warming up, get out the bin of basketballs.
Ask: What are 2 ways we can advance the basketball up the court? (passing and dribbling)
Say: Today we are going to focus on Dribbling the ball.
Ask: Why is dribbling so important in the game of basketball?
Assessment of Prior Knowledge:
Ask: What are some important things we need to know when dribbling the basketball? (bend your knees,
dribble with finger tips, keep it to your side, do not slap the ball, head up, keep the ball below your waste,
Do: Show students the Dos and Donts of dribbling a basketball.
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour:
Say: I need everyone to find a partner, with the partner you need 1 ball between each of you.
Say: In a moment you are going to go get a ball from the teacher. Once you get the ball DO NOT bounce it or
shoot it!
Say: Go find an open spot on the floor with your partner, WITHOUT BOUNCING THE BALL, and place the
ball on the ground beside you.
Advance Organizer/Agenda:
Stress the importance of proper technique when shooting a basketball
Transition to Body:

Say: Everyone go line up by the ball bin while we distribute the balls. Remember, do not dribble or shoot it.

Body (20 min.):

Learning Activity #1: Dribble Coach
Blow whistle to get kids attention.
Ask: Very quickly remind me what the important things are to remember when dribbling a basketball?
Say: So today, one of us is going to be the Coach and the other is going to be Dribbling. The coaches job is to
watch and make sure that their partner is following the important things to remember when dribbling a
basketball.
Say: Coaches need to remind students to bend their legs, keep the ball low, head up. They all get to tell their
player which hand to dribble with and when to switch it to their other hand.
Ask: Any questions? GO!
Do: Let one student dribble while the other coaches for 3 minutes then switch. (repeat as many times as
necessary)
Assessments/Differentiation:

Ensure that students are following the guidelines to proper dribbling and that coaches are helping them

improve.
Learning Activity #2: Follow the Leader
Do: Blow whistle to get kids attention!
Do: Invite each partner to set the ball on the ground beside them, distribute the rest of the balls to the
remaining kids that dont have one.
Ask: Has anyone in here ever played follow the leader?
Say: We are going to get everyone to line up behind Mr. Argyle like a big long snake. Leave some space
between you and the person in front of you.
Say: You need to follow Mr. Argyle everywhere he goes in the gym, if he switches and starts dribbling with
his other hand then you need to do the same. If he stops and walks sideways then you need to follow. Make
sure that you keep up with him and maintain control of the basketball following the proper mechanics of
dribbling.
Assessments/Differentiation

Observe students while they are following the leader and entire that they are doing what is expected of them.
Try to correct any students wrong mechanics
Learning Activity #3: Dribble relay race (IF TIME PERMITS)
Do: Split class into 5 even teams, with 5 balls and the pylons set up in 5 rows.
Do: Demonstrate how to dribble basketball between pylons and point out the importance of switching hands
as you weave between them.
Say: Explain how a relay race works, first team to send every member through the pylons and sits down wins
the game. (Repeat relay if time permits)
Assessments/Differentiation:
Assess students skills and abilities while running and dribbling the basketball.
Encourage them to work on dribbling skills at home when they have free time.

Closure (5 min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning:
At the end of the last relay race ask students to stop dribbling the basketball, set them down at the end of the
line and meet in the center of the gym.
Feedback From Students:
Ask: Do you feel like your basketball skills are being developed by doing these drills?
Ask: Can anyone tell us some important things to remember when dribbling the basketball?
Feedback To Students:
Say: I was very impressed with how hard you tried to develop your skills. Looked like you kids were having
a lot of fun!
Say: We can always use practice especially when it comes to a game like basketball, so we are going to
continue to develop your basketball skills.

Transition To Next Lesson:

Say: Next class we are going to focus on the skill of passing.
Say: We need to make a stack of pylons at the end of each row so I can come pick them up, put the balls
away and head back to class!
