Respected Sir,
Kindly let me introduce myself to you. I am a third year student Pursuing my B.Tech.
(Honors)Degree course in Mining Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology,
Kharagpur accredited to be the best technical institute of India.
I am especially interested in the field of Mining Engineering, Rock Mechanics,
Radioanalytics, Geological Mapping and Geology and Geophysics/Exploration
Geophysics.
I have completed an internship programme during May 2006 to July 2006 under the
guidance of Prof. Viktor Golias at Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Mineral
Resources, CHARLES UNIVERSITY, Prague, Czech Republic.
During the internship programme I participated in field trips, samples preparation and
data processing.
Field Trips made during the programme :
1. underground uranium mine Ron (Moravia) and visited uranium ore chemical
treatment mill with uranium concentrate production run by DIAMO.
2. radioactive water springs in Stbrnice (North Moravia).
3. polymetallic deposit Pbram Bezov Hory old water gallery level.
4. Pbram uranium deposit (closed since 1993) and Mokrsko gold deposit (prospect).
5. Uranium deposit Javornk outcrop, where a secondary dispersion aureole is
investigated at present.
I worked on the following Laboratory Equipments during the programme :
1. Electron Microscope CamScan with electron microanalyzer Link ISIS.
2. Powder Diffractograph XPert Pro (PANalytical) .
3. Laboratory Gamma Spectroscopy on Canberra series 10 scintillation spectrometer.
Work completed during the programme :
1. setting of medicinal radioactive water springs.
2. measuring water radioactivity (emanometer RP25 with ionization chamber) and
preparation of heavy mineral
concentrate from disintegrated rocks.
3. underground geological mapping (horizontal and combined projection methods) and

primary geological
documentation making.
4. radiometric geophysical measurement : soil emanometry (RP25 emanometer) and
shallow well gamma-logging
(KS20 radiometer).
5. geodetic surveying of measurement profiles and samples collection from stratified
soil profile.
6. X-ray patterns processing using software HighScore and Debye-Scherer method.
7. processed samples of geochemical profile (drying, crushing, homogenization, filling
of Marinelli bakers and scaling).
During the programme i also completed the Economic geology field course (G432T04),
held by Dr. Ji Zachari, PhD. (http://twinsen.natur.cuni.cz/eng/sis/predmety/kod.php?
kod=G432T04).
EXPERIENCE IN GEOLOGICAL MAPPING :
Underground geological mapping (horizontal and combined projection methods)
and primary geological documentation making at a polymetallic deposit Pbram
Bezov Hory old water gallery level, CZECH REPUBLIC and excursions to
Pbram uranium deposit (closed since 1993) and Mokrsko gold deposit (prospect).
KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN SUBSURFACE EXCAVATION OF MINERALS :
Coal Mining: Selection of mining methods, In-seam and horizon mining systems,
Pillar mining methods: application, development and extraction by conventional
and continuous methods; Longwall mining methods: application, development and
extraction by partially and fully mechanized mining methods; Stowing of goaf.
Non-coal Mining: Classification and choice of stoping methods, Methods of stoping:
open stoping, supported stoping breast, underhand and overhand stoping,
shrinkage stoping, cut and fill stoping method, sub-level stoping; Introduction to
caving methods: top slicing, sub-level caving, block caving; Stope mechanization
and level interval.
I have done the following practical projects at the ROCK MECHANICS laboratory,
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur under the guidance of Prof.U.M.Rao,
Department of Mining Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur :
1. Determaination of rock core recovery and rock quality designation.
2. Preparation of rock samples for U.C.S, U.T.S and punch shear strength tests.
3. Determination of the co-efficient of permeability.
4. Preparation of soil sample for costant head permeability test.
5. Determination of Dry Density, Total Porosity and Void Ratio.
6. Elastic properties of rocks.

7. Index properties of rocks.

I have acquired the following knowledge in the field of Rock Mechanics :
Physico-mechanical properties of rocks; Elastic and time dependent behaviour; Rock
mass classification; Theories of rock failure; Stress analysis; Insitu stresses and stress
distribution around mine openings; Ground failure and pressure on supports; Stability of
wide openings; Design of supports in mine workings.
Subsidence: Causes and impacts of subsidence; mechanics of surface subsidence ,
discontinuous and continuous subsidence; monitoring, prediction, control and
management of subsidence.
Mechanics of rock burst and bumps; Stability of slopes; Instrumentation and
measurement of insitu stresses and rock strength; Photoelasticity and scale model studies;
Basics of numerical methods in geomechanics with applications.
I have also done the following practical projects under the guidance of
Prof.A.K.bhattacharya, Department of geology and geophysics, Indian Institute of
Technology, Kharagpur.
Identification of minerals, Derivng rock composition, Study of various properties of
rocks, Examinig the potential rock deposits, Contour analysis.
And the following under Prof.U.M.Rao, Department of Mining Engineering, Indian
Institute of Technology, Kharagpur:
Mine Surveying, Mine Ventilation and Triangulation.
I am working on the project Rock Blasting under Dr.A.K.Raina, Scientist Central
Mining Research Institute, Nagpur.
I have acquired knowledge in engineering and economic geology ( rock mechanics,
contruction/structure of dams, tunnels, fault anaysis, seismic waves, earthquake study)
under the guidance of prof.Saibal Gupta and prof.M.A Mamtani, Department of geology
and geophysics, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
I have also acquired knowledge in mineral deposits under the guidance of prof. Biswajit
Samanta, Department of Mining Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
covering all the aspects of drilling, mine access etc.
Sir, right now I want to take up a summer internship under your Guidance in the summer
of 2007, where I can work on some project related to Mining Engineering, Rock
Mechanics, radioanalytics, geological mapping or geology and geophysics / exploration
geophysics. I am also mailing my resume.
I can contribute significantly to your institution while also acquiring an invaluable
learning experience for myself in the process. Given a chance to work under your
guidance will motivate me to pursue higher studies in this field.
you can also suggest me a field where I can contribute to your institute.

I eagerly await a reply from your side.

Thanking you,
Yours sincerely
