RacetoaDollar(23rdgradegame)
NCTMStandard:
Measurement: recognize the attributes of length, volume, weight, area, and time; compare and
order objects according to these attributes; understand how to measure using nonstandard and
standard units; select an appropriate unit and tool for the attribute being measured.
CommonCoreStandards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8
Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and
symbols appropriately.
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP5
Use appropriate tools strategically

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify coins (quarter, dime, nickel and penny) and their values
2. Students will be able to add the values of the coins together correctly, up to a dollar
Procedures:
1. Start by reviewing the values of coins, and what each looks like
2. Have students pair up with table partners
3. Give each pair of students one spinner, a paperclip, and some coins to use as
manipulatives (have students use paperclip and a pencil as a spinner)
4. Explain to students that the point of the game is to try to be the first to get their coins to
add to a dollar
5. Have each student write down their addition problems on a piece of paper
Questions:
1. Do you think that this game has a strategy? Why or why not?
2. What set of coins did you land on the most? The least?

FormativeAssessment
As an exit slip, have students write down at least one way they can get to a dollar using coins
InstructionalStrategies
Young children discover the properties of formal measuring systems by using informal or
arbitrary units". These are things such as body units; i.e. hands, feet, length of their arms),
then move into more specific units such as inches, yards, etc. Important vocabulary for
students to understand is length, height, weight, area, perimeter, and volume.
Foundational skills that students should acquire are comparing, describing, and
predicting. Measurement can be difficult since students can be easily fooled by
appearances, they dont naturally use measurement tools in everyday life, and using
measurement tools can also be difficult to use. To compare measurement to the real
world, have students like about cooking, or when they go to the store to purchase things.
Vocabulary
o Penny: a coin that is equal to one cent
o Nickel: a coin that is equal to five cents
o Dime: a coin that is equal to ten cents
o Quarter: a coin that is equal to twenty-five cents
Accommodations
1. Have students make a chart if they are having difficulties remembering values, and allow
them to use it during the game
2. For students that are having difficulties understanding the idea of value, use skinnies, and
bits to represent the coins.

This lesson was adapted from a similar lesson on teacherspayteacher.com where there is a
spinner that I would use for this lesson. This will help students with their counting practice, as
well as addition with money.
