OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

68 Apply observation and inference skills to recognize and interpret patterns and to
distinguish a specific pattern from a group of similar patterns.
4. Investigate evidence and link it to a possible source; e.g., by:
analyzing handwriting samples to identify the handwriting of a specific person
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:
1. Be able to identify differences between different handwriting samples and try to make inferences
on what they think it compares to
ASSESSMENTS
Observations:
Are students working together and cooperating with one another?
Key Questions:
Can students make observations of handwriting samples?
Can they create their own sheet and observe their classmates
handwriting?

PROCEDURE
Prior to lesson
Done many experiments to look at investigation
Introduction
Time
Attention Grabber
ASK: How can peoples handwriting be differentiated between?
What could you look at?
Expectations for
I expect students to be working cooperatively with their groups
Learning and
and to do their best work as it is important for others to be able to
Behaviour
make observations according to the others groups writing.
Advance
1. Talk about what makes handwriting different
Organizer/Agenda
2. Look at first sheet and make observations about the writing
samples in groups of 2
3. Make own sheet and switch with a different group

Learning Activity #1
ASK: What are some things that make peoples writing different
from others?
Prompt: angle, loops, capital letters, as
ASK: Why do you think investigators need to learn how to tell the
difference between peoples handwriting?
Prompt: If a note is left at the crime scene it is important for
1

investigators to have the knowledge to differ between suspects

handwriting and the note that was left.

Learning Activity #3

SAY: On the handout I gave you is different writing samples. In

your elbow partners, I want you to discuss and analyze the
handwriting samples and make observations of the difference
between each one using the prompts we talked about earlier: angle,
loops, capitals, as etc.
You have 5 mins to analyze and write down your observations and
inferences.
DO: Class discussion

SAY: Now I am going to put you into groups and you are going to
each write the statement I have wrote on the board underneath the
top section of the handout. Do not put names beside your writing
as you are going to be exchanging this paper with another group. I
do want you putting numbers 1- 5/6 beside each writing though.
SAY: Now you are going to pick one person from your group to
write the exact same message under the criminal section. Do not
put your name beside as people are going to have to guess Whos
writing it matches up with up top. I want you to write similar in
both sections if you are the criminal as well.
SAY: I am going to give each group 2 sheets and I want you to fill
them in the same, but having 2 different criminals.
SAY: When you get other sheets from the other groups I want you
to be making good observations and I want you writing them
under the sections at the bottom. I then want you to make an
inference of which writing matches.

Time

We are going to pass around a ball and students are going to say
something that can make writing different from others or a reason
investigators may need to know how to differentiate peoples
handwriting.
Great observations today!
