Running Head: Literature Review

Abstract:
The following ages are a review of Susan Montgomery and Linda Groats article Student
Learning Styles and The Implications for Teaching. It discusses the reasons why different
learnings styles are valuable to know. The paper also includes reasoning for why it matters as an
educator it knows these styles. Finally, it discusses why varying teaching styles not only benefit
the student but also the teacher.

Teachers now deal with larger class sizes than ever before. This would not a problem if
everyone learned the same way but ask any teacher and they will tell you no students learns the
same as another. By teachers incorporating different teaching styles you are more open to the
different learning abilities student have. The more diverse are lesson plans are the more likely
your student will be successful.
From the beginning of the first day you begin to learn about your students and the ways they
are different. By learning about them and their differences you begin to learn about the ways they
learn differently. This is the what Montgomery and Groat talk about in their article Student
Learning Styles and their Implications for Teaching. They first discuss the five reasons why
knowing about different learning style helps teachers to be better and stay longer in the field. The
five reasons are: 1. Making Teaching and Learning a Discussion; 2. Responding to a more
Diverse Student Body; 3. Communicating our Message; 4. Making Teaching More Rewarding; 5.
Ensuring the further of our Disciplines. The article then goes on to four major learning styles
and how they were modeled and why it matters. It also explains how knowing these styles and
how to appeal to them are at least create lesson plans that varied may allow for a wider range of
students to be accessed based on their learning style. This I think is the most important part of
this article is that it stays realistic with a teachers ability to vary within a single lesson verses a
period of time such as a unit, or all year long planning. Montgomery and Groat state In the end,
we may be ensuring the long-term viability of our given field if we make sure the students with a
diversity of learning styles are welcomed and encouraged.
As a teacher, it is important to include variation for the students. Some student work well in
groups while others work best alone. Just as some students who are strong readers do well with
reading assignments while other students do best with videos. Having these variations through

the subject matter and year ensure that a more number of students may be reached instead of
only ones who may do well in that subject because if their own abilities. By varying lessons, it
also helps the teacher to not get bored with own work as well. By keeping the work interesting
for the teacher, it helps the teacher stay longer within their career field.
